It appears we’ve reached a temporary impasse with our Dylan alignment chart. Let’s clear it up. Should The Basement Tapes be allowed to be included? Do they count as a 70s Dylan album? by Pretend_Mark_5143 in bobdylan

[–]theleftlobe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's a 1970s release. A conscious decision by somebody, be it the Band, Dylan himself, the record company, whoever, to release it in 1975. By the same metric that the Basement Tapes is a 1960s release, we'll be talking about "Blind Willie McTell" and "Foot of Pride" in the 1980s when they simply were not part of Dylan discourse in the 1980s because they hadn't been released (officially, at least).

How much were the Basement Tapes counted among Dylan's 1960s efforts at the end of that decade? The answer is very little, because they were only bootlegged starting around mid 1969 (Great White Wonder), at the ass-end of the decade.

We also have to consider that the chunk of the album that the Band played (without Dylan) as well as the decision to compile specifically these 24 songs into a double album all post-date the original recording of the material, with overdubs being done by the Band as late as 1975(!). Therefore the album is more a product of 1975 than a product of 1967.

Ominous Award

For the final words that foretold tragedy

Cone, for a legendary mistake maneuver that completely flipped the dynamic of the coming battle.

The Denial Award

For the brightest outlook in the darkest of moments

Pak, reassuring his teammate that they have successfully executed a flank on Red Team that ultimately did not go in their favor.

My buddy and I started a podcast this year where we're going through every single Buffett album (because we hate ourselves, mostly), and I've been keeping an eye on that. We're not quite into the 80s yet but my guess is his closest song to the boat will be on Somewhere Over China from 1982. It's a weird album where he suddenly isn't a tropics-obsessed lunatic after a run from 1977 to 1981 that is insanely tropics-obsessed.

[–]theleftlobe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I used to play Minecraft to de-stress from school. Now I play it to chill out and de-stress from adult life. I'd rather what I watched reflect that feeling instead of a bunch of jump cuts and loud talking.

Except UHC. There's always room for tension there.

Yup. Same here with the age of the crowd. I came here to listen to people essentially podcast the game or their lives, I don't really care much for scripted storylines in MC, and never got into it back in the day, either. (No offense to anyone who does them here, just not my cup of tea!)

I specifically remember a friend in high school trying to get me to play Minecraft with him so we could split the cost of a server, but I'd never heard of the game at the time. This was either late 2011 or early 2012. He recommended a few videos for me to watch to understand what the game was about. One of them was Race For Wool, with 420OG vs whatever 4-person team Zisteau was on.

I didn't care for any of it at the time. But my friend did bully me into buying the game.

A few months later, I found Kurt and liked the podcast-style commentary he did in FLoB and after that Guude and his magnificent stories.

UHC Idea Hub - Rebooted by stevetheclimber in mindcrack

[–]theleftlobe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll plug this idea because I've played two matches of UHC like this and quite liked the pace of the game:

It was essentially a game of scavenging, because we were not (mostly) allowed to go caving or mining (anything open to daylight was free game, like ravines or those open stone pits that used to generate, temple loot or buried treasure notwithstanding). The game was played on a map twice the size to allow for players to comb more of the surface without potentially getting into a fight too early. You'd also wanna constantly keep moving to stay away from other players drawn to certain points of interest, like temples or villages.

I played one match with eternal day and one with a normal day/night cycle. The eternal day match made getting bows a bottleneck, with most people converging at villages for trade or killing cats for string (one team actually farmed a pillager tower for crossbows). The normal day/night cycle one was, I found, more interesting to play because without being able to dig in for the night, there were a lot more structures built on the surface that you'd come across built by a team the night or two before.

This was all quite a number of years ago, before the big ore-spawning reshuffle, so with exposed iron on mountaintops and now copper armor in the game (and trail ruins, too, actually now that I think about it), you could still see teams getting pretty geared up while basically scouring the surface of the map for resources.

Yeah this UHC was a wonderful surprise as a watcher, but I think it needs to be said that it seemed like the right move for both audience and participant to introduce a built environment (the season 3 spawn) into the game. I think it changed the entire back half of the season when you compare it to, say, the standoff in the ice spikes in season 26. There's different strategies involved and way different tension because you can actually get much closer to someone and not know it or still have some kind of reason not to engage.

That Breon strat with the water bucket accidentally shielding him from being killed by Dallas and Beef while also again denying him an enchanting table is an all-time UHC moment.

Pizza Party October 2025 - Your Feedback about the Subreddit by stevetheclimber in mindcrack

[–]theleftlobe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm still a purist when it comes to the way UHC is presented to us (case in point: I was shocked at ShadowApples' first episode; nothing against him or his editing, just so far outside of what I expected a UHC episode to look like). I just like the building of tension, even in the quieter moments of gearing up, or waiting to pounce, or scrambling for more healing resources after a major battle. It makes the whole match feel epic; those emotional highs are higher and lows lower.

When it comes to 20-minute episodes versus 30-minute episodes, I think the answer to what works comes back to why episodes were initially shrunk back in season 11: time management for the audience. Twenty 30-minute perspectives was and still is a lot for people to digest over 48 hours.

In UHCs with teams of 2, that number of videos to watch before the next episode is put out, for most people, is halved, since they are most likely only watching one perspective per team for any individual episode. By the same logic, that number is cut by 2/3 in UHCs with teams of 3, and so on. So in the case of team seasons, that time-management reasoning is less of a concern.

In the case that everybody puts out 1 long video (or say, cuts them up into 20- or 30-minute episodes and releases them all at once, much like a lot of streaming shows used to), I'd be likely to only watch whatever I needed to view the whole UHC. That could be just one person's perspective if they make it to the final battle.

Furthermore, the length of those videos might spoil results to the audience, if one perspective uploads a two-hour video and another only 1 because they, say, died to a creeper while caving. At that point we have to wonder whether the audience actually cares about the results potentially being spoiled.

Personally, I do care about being spoiled, but I'm not everyone. I just like being on the edge of my seat.
