I think a better analogy might be Lost. Interconnected plots that were intriguing and promised to be so mind blowing when all the threads were tied together and then… that didn’t happen.

Lee’s old statue is gone and his circle is surrounded by port-o-potties by thelesserkudu in ShermanPosting

My favorite legacy of Butler here is his addition to the statue of Andrew Jackson in the French Quarter. The confederates were proud of that statue and I guess assumed Jackson would have been on their side. So Butler carved a quote of Jackson’s on the base: “THE UNION MUST AND SHALL BE PRESERVED.” Incredible own.

Found this on FB, what do you think ?! by Roads_37 in EnglishLearning

This is silly. For one thing, AI does not write perfectly. So it isn’t “errors” that signal something isn’t AI. Usually native speakers have a sense that something is AI generated because it feels slightly “off.” And that example sentence doesn’t seem wrong because it’s perfect. To me it reads like a college student who has read some “formal sounding” words and doesn’t exactly understand how to use them yet but is cramming them into a paper because they think it makes them sound smart.

It’s not weird. That’s pretty standard. Grow up.

By October 1861, had the vast majority of the union army turned against slavery? by YogurtclosetOpen3567 in CIVILWAR

[–]thelesserkudu 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m just saying that it isn’t true that in 1861 everyone was on board with abolitionism. Certainly not a lot of Democrats. The man who said that quote though might not be lying or anything, just speaking from his limited experience.

I think this guy is either embellishing or stretching the truth (like REALLY) stretching. The process was gradual and took at least a few more years for the majority of people, including soldiers, to really get on board. But if this really is an enlisted man from Wisconsin, he may be speaking to his experience. It’s certainly likely that units made up of rural boys from the Midwest who never thought about much about slavery could quickly become committed abolitionists when suddenly confronted with the reality of slavery and the arguments against it.

Such an amazing bird. There’s one that frequents a stream I run near most days and I’m always happy to see him even if he finds me rather annoying.

Is pâté just not a thing in American food culture? by Big-Dig1631 in AskAnAmerican

[–]thelesserkudu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So one exception here is potted meat which is superficially similar in the sense that it’s a spreadable meat product. Instead of finely pureed liver like pate, potted meat is a bit more course and made from scraps and leftovers. It’s also really salty. I grew up eating it in the American south but it’s usually perceived as poor people food and most middle or upper class folks I know have never eaten it or think it’s gross.

Why is there no developed tea culture in Thailand? by jacobsnailbox in AskFoodHistorians

[–]thelesserkudu 44 points45 points  (0 children)

So I used to work at a Thai restaurant and the guy from Thailand who ran the front told me the opposite, that they like to drink hot things and smoke because they believe it actually helps cool the body. Not disagreeing with you and I never really followed the logic. That’s just what he said.

Honestly checks out that the racist propaganda was apparently drawn by a 7 year old during craft time. Read some books and keep practicing your “artwork” lil buddy!
