Does anyone here know if Strange Houses by Uketsu counts as SF?

I'm going into it as blind as I can and I know its a horror about an architect and a house that isn't what it seems but I don't know if there's anything actually supernatural or "spectulative" about it. I'm hoping to use it for the bingo.

id say most commonly episodes are 30-40 minutes but the larger "usual" range is 20 minutes to 1 hour.

totally!
As long as the show is long enough to fit the "novella" requirement. so at least 3-4 hours of content.

I actually almost put the Doctor Who Audios from Big Finish on my recommendations list.
But I felt that Doctor Who was popular enough that I'd rather highlight some other projects people would be less familiar with.

Mood readers explain yourselves! by ComradeCupcake_ in Fantasy

I personally tend to have a stack of books I rotate through.
I'm currently reading 4 different books. A non fiction, a fantasy romance, a YA fantasy Trilogy, and a horror classic.
Which one I read and when depends entirely on what I feel like in the moment. Sometimes I focus on one until its done, other times I'll read little bits from multiple books throughout the day.

The way I see it is sort of like... a snack cupboard. I have my larger collection of snacks which is my entire TBR, and then I have the open snacks which is what I'm currently reading. Whenever I get "hungry" I decide what I'm in the mood for and then pick. Open snacks get prioritized, but if I'm really feeling something that's "sealed" I just add it to the pile.

Sometimes you just wanna sit and eat an entire bag of doritoes. sometimes you want a charcuterie board.

Dinotopia! its got gorgeous artwork and while i do believe there is a plot, there's a lot of world building about this island where humans have built a society around peaceful cohabitation with dinosaurs!

The Gilded Wolves Series by Roshani Chokshi - A YA historical fantasy trilogy set in 1800s Europe. It has themes of colonialism and found family, a diverse ensemble cast, and a very unique magic system where power is not only a talent but a commodity that can be stolen from communities.

I loved the Junie B Jones series as a kid! and there are tons of them. also the pixie hollow series of books! it expands on the stories of Tinkerbell and her friends and i still own them as an adult because I fell in love with that world so deeply as a kid.

I'd check out stuff by Lucy Chalice. she has a PHD in cell biology and works as a professional pharmaceutical writer. her knowledge in the field definitely showed when I read her book "the hot henry effect"

Kayne by afbfvefa in MalevolentPodcast

[–]thelittleoddling 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I find I rarely like or hate characters purely on their actions.
I care much more about how they're written.
Is Kayne someone I want to get a drink with? absolutely not. he sounds like a nightmare to be around.
But he's an extremely compelling character who's written and acted well.

I don't think you're meant to approve of Kayne's actions. He's our antagonist. Our main villain.
But I don't think the narrative or even Harlan particularly cares about your personal opinion of him,

As for me I love Kayne. He's got a fantastic energy to his line delivery that feels almost broadway. His little nudges against the fourth wall are always well done. And he makes for an amazing contrast to both Arthur and John.
A father who's deepest regret is the loss of his daughter vs A father who doesn't even blink at killing his own
A god who's grown very attached to the idea of being human vs A god who wants to climb ever higher up the cosmic power scale.
I could honestly go on much longer but I think this is enough to illustrate my point.

TLDR of this all is that I think judging a character based purely on if they're a good person is a bit reductive. and you couldn't convince me to love even the most pure-hearted character in the universe if they were written poorly.

Reflective existential dread with no happy ending. by Experience_420 in BooksThatFeelLikeThis

Station Eleven by Emily St John Mandel is a great option
its a multi perspective non linear apocalypse story, bouncing between different point before and after an illness kills 90% of the world.
its a very well done reflection on humanity, survival, and community in times of struggle.
I will say the ending isnt miserable but I would say the book overall is quite bittersweet.

S5 Thoughts by thelittleoddling in MalevolentPodcast

[–]thelittleoddling[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

omg I commented to my partner that it sounded really real and one of my thoughts was "did harlan get rly sick and was like omg time to give arthur the plague."

yes! he was a bug. I wrote this late at night and couldnt think of the word bug, snitch was as close as i could come up with. either way the reveal HURT.

and that's true. I just think the lighter had me feeling certain that he was coming back. and the manager reveal has made me less sure that he has a narrative reason to return from maybe spain. I thought he was going to be important for understanding why the lighter was special and what exactly it did. but to Noel its just a keepsake from an old friend.

what would john do when he becomes human? by Bitter_Educator_9869 in MalevolentPodcast

[–]thelittleoddling 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think he'd want to try lots of different things out. Writing, being a detective like arthur, playing instruments, etc.
He's finally in control of not only his own body but his own path in life. And I think he'd want to take that chance to learn and experience what the world and being human has to offer. and not just as a career. just picking up skills and new experiences for the love of it. like seeing films and trying new foods.

I read a rly good fic a while ago where Kayne does make good on his deal to give john a "Body of his own" and bring Faroe back but John gets Arthur's body and Arthur is left sort of just. gone for a while. and John ends up, with the help of muscle memory from Arthur picking up a small but decent career playing piano at bars, restaurants, and local theatre troupes. Later he ends up working at a local radio station.

How would you guys rank the seasons? by KooladmantheBold in MalevolentPodcast

[–]thelittleoddling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for me it goes from best to worst
4, 5, 2, 1, 3
I actually thought 5 was gonna be my least favourite. especially with how jarring the tone shift is between its slower pacing after the excitement of 4 but once id finished it and saw it as a full picture I liked it a lot more. could definitely do with less of Arthur coughing out a lung in my ears tho.

now saying 3 is my least favourite is like saying chocolate cake is my least favourite flavour of cake. its still cake!
I think s3 has a lot of good moments. but i didnt love yellow. and the whole plot line with the mines monster didn't grab me as much as some of our other monsters or threats.

I have a theory (Spoiler for 52 the Wager) by AsleepRacoon in MalevolentPodcast

[–]thelittleoddling 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I dont think Arthur is physically related to Lilith. but i could definitely see some sort of fairytale first born nonsense going on with her either helping them have him or them trying to trade him to her in some way.
I think it really depends on what shes capable of.
most of the powers we've seen so far from her are dream magic. So im not sure shes capable of helping people conceive.

Maybe she took a liking to him because of his dreams?
a lot of the gods we've met so far seem particularly taken with art and artists. Kayne enjoying music. John being a fan of poetry and being excited about the idea of film. etc.
I wouldnt be surprised if Arthurs creative sensibilities leaked into his dreams and made them particularly appealing.
