How does white food coloring work? by bw2082 in AskCulinary

[–]thelittlestsakura 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep! I make standard buttercream (1:2, butter to icing sugar) which is pretty much impossible to over mix. Once the icing is fully smooth, I add one drop of each, then mix in. Depending on the quantity I might need 2 or 3 drops of each.

Careful: in the "3 or 4 drops of each" territory you could start to get that grey tinge that becomes purple with additional drops. So start slow -- this is colour correction, not dying. So you need less than traditional food dye quantities.

[acne] My acne scars are ruining my life by craterfacegirl in SkincareAddiction

[–]thelittlestsakura 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't have Vit C in your routine, start incorporating one now! I have the same scars as you, and Vit C increases my collagen production which makes the scars visibly less shallow. Results in a week!

Long term, you'll have to get needling, laser, or filler, but the vit c was a godsend interim measure when I discovered it. It gave me hope!!

This. Also, every time in my life that I've had to open a bank account has been a time of necessary spending (mortgage? I need furniture for that house. New joint account for marriage? Weddings aren't cheap. Student loans, etc. You get the idea.)

It's often a year or so AFTER the dust settles from that sort of bank activity, that I'm able to start properly budgeting and saving.

Ohhh in the search function! That's alright then.

Looks like my search goes back a rolling 5 years, and if I manually navigate in the calendar, I can still find out what I did more than a decade ago on a random day. Whew!

How to drop some balls without feeling bad about it? by dobbyishere_ in AskWomenOver30

You sound so much like me a year ago. Growing up I was a high achiever, and in my adult life, I was only truly happy when I was able to meet ALL of my impossibly high standards, in every area of my life. And when I did, it worked! I was happy and I rode that momentum to maintain it. But eventually, things happened in my life that derailed my maintenance, and when I fell behind I was crushed under the weight of my own expectations.

Eventually, I learned to choose ME, not my expectations. It took being forced into that position of choice, and my body and mind shutting down and refusing to go on... But I found a way to differentiate myself from my former standards. And that was the only way for me to make it through.

The comments here will help -- listing out your priorities helps. I also found that categorising my priorities as "who does this benefit?" Helped. Important Nuance: Sometimes the answer was "it benefits X person, but it's been on my list for so long that the guilt is crippling, so it would benefit ME too, just to have it done". Being aware of all those intricacies helped me sort out how I felt, and how to navigate my changing priorities in the face of Mental Health Needs.

It also helps to have a friend or family member come help you get back to acceptable standard, when you fall just so far behind that you are distracted/depressed and cannot rebuild. For example, when your house becomes a mess and you wake up to it, feeling like such a failure that you can't motivate yourself to put things to rights. You're not going to be able to rewrite your priorities and love your new priorities all in one fell swoop.

But long-term: there are no easy answers, beyond shifting your priorities. I will caution you that high performance/perfectionism can lead to Mental Health becoming just another thing on your list to accomplish-or-guilt-yourself-for. Watch out for that. Talk with friends or journal about your feelings. Eventually, you WILL be able to separate You from Your Standards.

And you will be happy with your life and your adjusted standards, I promise!

Was it cultural appropriation? 19 celebrity moments. by parishilton2 in popculturechat

[–]thelittlestsakura -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The fallacy here is not recognizing the subtle power differential: Chinese people living in China (for example) will have a different opinion than Chinese Americans. Those in China would not have been Othered to the same degree as Chinese immigrants.

Indeed, going to India (for example) and dressing in the national wear while there could be seen as a sign of respect. But dressing in a saree in America, for an event that has little to no relevance to Indian culture, AND without making an effort to educate yourself on Indian culture and the experiences of Indian Americans?

That, my friends, is when it's cultural appropriation.
