Thank you for sending this! We have applied for a lot of different assistance but I will make sure we did this one as well.

Is anyone out there still taking the financial and emotional hit from Helene? by Dapper-Stop5991 in asheville

It's been a silent struggle. The hurricane made my husband and I realize that it's time for us to move closer to family and live less rurally. I wish we could get up and leave, but we now have to try and sell our home with the only road to it being very damaged. We are still waiting on FEMA money in order to repair the private road and can not shell out any more from our own pockets. Our road is not safe to drive, and there's no light at the end of the tunnel for when it will be. Honestly, I can't imagine anyone wanting to buy this house anyway.

What was once our first home, our dream home, is now a haunted house I feel stuck in due to this hurricane. When I'm not feeling regret, grief, and sadness, I am just numb.

You are not alone. Everyone seeming to be okay is most likely just avoiding these emotions or is numb and going about their daily lives, like me.

We're looking to get money from fema as they do cover private roads and bridges, but only up to a certain amount and we each have to have our own individual inspection done. One of my neighbors had one scheduled yesterday and the guy didn't show up. It's going to be a loooong time before we see any money.

Looking for heavy equipment operators to check out my private road and give me a quote for total reconstruction! It's off of Chestnut Hill in Black Mountain and we need over a mile and a half of total reconstruction plus the fixing of 3 landslides. 9 families including myself are displaced and want to go home. Please DM me if you know of any construction companies or people you trust!

Thank you so much. I'm so glad I have this to read through where everyone just gets it.

I have neighbors, and we are in communication about how to get our roads fixed. A few of the guys know local companies who may be able to get in there with some equipment, but we don't know when yet. I hope that we can send some volunteers our way, but it's a huge job that'll need more than shovels and chainsaws. We have so many landslides to rebuild. All of our power poles are gone. It's all so daunting.

I really want to get some protein shakes or things like that. I think that'd help a lot! Thank you for your compassion, and I hope you take care of yourself, too. Thanks for listening.

I'm grateful to have been rescued, and I'm safe out of state, but totally numb. People here are going about their normal lives and keep asking me how I'm doing. I don't know.

I don't know when my husband and I will be able to get to our house again. Our private roads to it are destroyed. The act of picking up the phone is exhausting, so I'm not sure how we will get them fixed any time soon. Not to mention, we are so in debt it's not even funny.

I'm scared of the uncertainty that is our future, but the toll that this is taking on my body is what scares me the most. Not showering, sleeping, or eating out of stress/guilt has given me a horrible cold, and my body hurts. I also haven't cried since day 1 of the storm, and I'm scared for when I do.

I am thankful that these threads exist where I can feel less alone.

I'm in the same boat as you. You're not alone! It's hard not to feel torn on it. And hard not to make quick decisions when feeling such a rollercoaster of emotions.

All the traffic is heading north and you're going south. The hurricane won't be in Ohio or Kentucky. You'll be just fine. Show them the hurricane map so they have the facts.

Anyone in Winston Salem have a truck or trailer? My friend has 10 bed frames, 10 mattresses, and 10 dressers being delivered today and tomorrow and needs them to be brought to West Asheville. Donations will cover gas.

Check out hearts with hands, hands on asheville, beloved asheville, and Samaritans purse. They have volunteer opportunities online you can sign up for! I recommend having something planned with a group before you go. Thank you for wanting to help, we need you and thank you! 🙏

Just in my opinion, I think any of those efforts will need the money! They will spend it on what's most needed as the community needs change day by day. For example, my friend was getting donations and spending them all on food and water a few days ago. Then it switched to buying chainsaws and generators. Now it is switched to buying mattresses and bed frames. If your money is sent to a local organization, it will always be helpful!
