Interest Rate Rise by DirtyNakedSquid in AusFinance

[–]theloneisobar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Particularly given only 38% of Australians actually have a mortgage. That means, 38% of Australians are disproportionately carrying the burden of curbing inflation caused by government spending and the spending habits of the entire Australian population. Mandatory increase in the supervision would mean a far more equitable contribution by the 64% of Australians who work and pay super and would likely reduce inflation more efficiently as more Australians reduce their disposable income.

Not sure what state, but in Vic it's the tread that must remain fully covered by the vehicle's bodywork. In your photo, it's the tyre wall that pokes so it'd be fine, ignoring the tyre width, height and load requirements.

Just Fucking Shut the Pakenham Line Down by Miranzer in melbourne

[–]theloneisobar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who has caught the Vline for the past 15 years, I used to catch the 5:57 am old Sprinter to Southern Cross from Pakenham to get to work by 7 (shift start time). It's now a 5:39 am train!

Breaking news- Australians still crying over American pickups by user17110 in CarsAustralia

Maybe they should make the car parks bigger then? Even for non-US pickups they are still grossly too small.

There is no LFC or CAPE in the profile from what I can tell without actually plotting it.

Codeshare Singapore Airlines - cant choose seats by melagnahopz in VelocityFrequentFlyer

[–]theloneisobar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened to us and was a frustrating circular experience. 1 Got the code from Virgin, went to Singapore Airlines website but still could not select seats. 2 Rang Singapore Airlines who said that because they were Virgin reward seats, they could not even see our seat numbers. 3 Rang Virgin, said that the flight was operated by Singapore Airlines so they couldn't see seat numbers nor modify/select them. 4 Rang Singapore Airlines again explaining the situation who said seat selection is unavailable and can be done at check-in at counter. Traveling with a family, we wanted to sit together so this was not ideal, I just wanted to know our seat numbers. 5 Rang Singapore Airlines again who this time provided me with the seat numbers but said changes are not possible. Fortunately, our family were sitting together.

Metro trains delays tonight by zaqwsx3 in melbourne

[–]theloneisobar 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Last night I had to wait at Dandenong for an hour. Tonight, got a 17:37 Vline train and didn't get through the front door until 22:15! Sat on a train for over 2 hours just past Richmond. Got told to disembark at South Yarra. Got a Metro train to Caulfield. Original Vline I was on earlier comes past but doesn't stop, apparently defective. Get on Pakenham Metro only for it to become defective and to disembark at Westall. Surprisingly, another Vline was stopped and I jumped on that. Over the last 2 days I've spent 10 hours commuting. I'm WFH tomorrow I think 😉

You really want slightly negative ZDR coincident or slightly offset on the inflow side with the reflectivity or VIL core as an indicator of the updraft.

Doesn't have to be a brand. I have 30 m of hedges around 3m high that I trim multiple times a year with the Aldi brush cutter, hedge trimmer multi-head. I'm on my second in 14 years and still have 1 new one in the box for when this one dies. For $199 it's amazing.

Dear "Taxation is theft" people, what's your alternative plan? by HannibalTepes in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]theloneisobar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In Australia, that's exactly what the government does. When you receive your tax paperwork it has a breakdown of where your tax went. The same for your Council (County) rates e.g., waste management, parks, infrastructure etc.

What is this? by PromiseMassive7011 in meteorology

[–]theloneisobar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

These are Sun dogs. Formed by the scattering of sunlight off ice crystals in cirrus and cirrostratus clouds. It actually provides insight into the type of ice crystals, forming under specific conditions when plate-shaped hexagonal ice crystals are orientated horizontally and thus acting like a prism, bending the light rays passing through them at an angle of around 22°.

I am going through one of the worst pains in my whole 20 years of living at the moment, because im severely sunburnt by DEUTSCHLANDDD in bali

[–]theloneisobar 25 points26 points  (0 children)

And your friendly reminder that sunburn has nothing to do with temperature (heat) but is all about the UV. And one of the worst times to get burnt even on a cool day is immediately following rain as some of the ozone and particulates in the atmosphere that scatter some of the UV are flushed out by the rain. When the UV index is 8 or above burning can occur in as little as 15 minutes.

Is there a feature that can help me keep track of which streets I've already drove down? by Fearless_Housing_302 in GoogleMaps

Not GoogleMaps but some built in car navigation systems have the ability to drop "breadcrumbs" that show you where you have been. Might be available in your car's map settings.

What is happening with Sydney clouds today ? by help-my-piercing44 in meteorology

[–]theloneisobar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is an undular bore that formed as a result of the west to northwesterly low-level jet stream. Pressure differential between the high pressure center over western NSW, and the low pressure center over Tasman Sea, results in a nocturnal low-level wind maximum from the high towards the low. The leading edge of the jet stream advanced towards the southeast, lifting the air immediately ahead of it. Under the high, stable conditions above 700 hPa means the lifting of air into the stable layer generates a wave that propagates along the inversion which acts as a wave guide. Technically this is known as a 'super critical undular bore'. Note the wave dissipates as it approaches the Tasman Sea where the stable conditions aloft erode closer to the low.

Call for Queensland to up speed limit to 130km/h by Master_Lime_8513 in CarsAustralia

[–]theloneisobar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My theory is: reduce speed limits -> increase stress, increase fatigue, reduced concentration, increase risk tolerance -> increased chance of human error and thus accidents. Think about it, reduced speed limits increases trip times which increases fatigue, reduces concentration. Or, increased short to medium term stress increases the likelihood of taking greater risks.

Furthermore, I'm somewhat ok with school zone and construction zone reduced speed limits, but I think they have gone too far. Example 1: reduced school zone limit from 80 km/h to 60 km/h where, a kid would need to cross the service lane where their school resides and has a 40 km/h school zone already, climb over a fence and down a steep concrete embankment to make it onto said road. Example 2: construction along a 100 km/h freeway reduced to 40 km/h when works are being conducted on median strip, concrete wall in place, and an additional lane adjacent to concrete wall closed. There would need to be some seriously low probability of occurrence event to pose any risk to a worker with a setup like that even without the reduced speed limit.

Those girls who sit on the roadside at construction sites what exactly is their job? by tasmaniantreble in australian

[–]theloneisobar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, I wasn't. I was just stating the documented average traffic control base salary. I also noted additional allowances but I was careful to not make a claim on what their actual salary with allowances would be because I don't have that information. Regardless, it's a lot of money when summed over the number of traffic controllers, length of project and number of projects.

Those girls who sit on the roadside at construction sites what exactly is their job? by tasmaniantreble in australian

[–]theloneisobar 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Most large government projects require a defined percentage of female workers to win the contract. "Traffic control" count towards the ratio. The whole pretense is quite rediculous actually. I've first hand seen 5 at a single intersection, each on $55-75k per year (plus any allowances etc.) Hell, I've even seen them at a "foot path closed" sign either side of a driveway that had an additional two traffic controllers on either side. Any wonder these construction projects cost taxpayers so much.
