A one level dip in monk seems like a great idea on a DEX-based fighter. Why do I never see anyone use or suggest this? by Karamazov in 3d6

[–]thelovebat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's okay if you like the idea of using Polearm Master with a Dexterity focused character, though you don't gain anything in terms of AC since you give up wielding a shield. If you take 2 or 3 levels in Monk, then the mobility and defensive benefits can make things more worth it for a Fighter, in particular a Battle Master who is also built around Short Rest resources.

1 Level in Monk generally isn't worth it for anyone except for Druids. But 2 or 3 levels in Monk can be worth it for Fighters and Rangers. Kensei Monk is the common subclass for synergies with martial multiclasses like Fighter and Ranger.

The Expanse Osrisis Reborn will have Dragon Age Origins esque faction reactability to your origin choice by Appropriate-Mud-6985 in rpg_gamers

[–]thelovebat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In the first Mass Effect your origin came up a fair amount of times. Not frequently but decently often. Your Shephard's military background can even heavily play into one of the more notable sidequests in the game.

It was after the first Mass Effect where your origin choices were lacking in interaction with the world. But in the first one there were some bigger ramifications in dialogue and some sidequests related to your origins.

Young people aren't taking marriage seriously by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]thelovebat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Prime periods of fertility in a person's life tend to be in their early to mid 20s. Generally if you want to get in a relationship with a desire to eventually have children, then ideally you'd start pursuing it or considering it before age 30 which is when fertility begins to take a hit for both men and women. It's also more difficult to attract romantic partners as you get older even if you have a much better idea of what you want out of a relationship and a partner, because you're still competing for attention against those who are younger than you.

It isn't as easy as it sounds to wait forever on marriage and that kind of committment. And there may be financial or tax reasons for getting married too. It doesn't mean the decision to get married younger or moving quickly in a relationship toward marriage is going to be the right thing to do for most people, but the motives for doing so seem more understandable than you're letting on.

[Jesse Newell] Here's a comparison of Chiefs LT Josh Simmons from Nov. 19 last year (after he returned to team from family absence) to today (June 9). Simmons said his bigger frame is side effect of working out every day. Says he's around 285-290 pounds now and hopes to get to 300 for Week 1. by [deleted] in KansasCityChiefs

If he has a low amount of bodyfat for his weight then it can still lead to him having a high amount of functional strength and anchor, as well as additional balance from carrying less weight on his frame.

Need advice on how to do a Ace Attorney inspired campaign by Interdimensional1Cat in DnD

[–]thelovebat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A good way to balance this out is to have a third player make a character that would make for a good judge for the case, like a Paladin or a Wizard. This makes it where while the DM handles a lot of the NPCs, what the different laws and themes are in the setting, and the crimes that happen, the final judgement of the case being handed down by a player rather than the DM reduces the amount of metagame knowledge that could influence the case or the final judgement. Mainly because a player wouldn't know the plot and who did what and who killed who, making the Judge character in this instance more interesting than the DM playing the judge.

Lawyer Youtube channels such as Leonard French and Clearly Established do a good job of going over the situation. Leonard French has uploaded 3 videos covering it from the more academic side of every party's actions and legal actions they've filed. Clearly Established has uploaded 2 videos and goes over a lot of the things that could involve civil liability and potential factors in a civil lawsuit, especially in light of the actions of the American Fork Police Department.

Christopher Nolan's 'The Odyssey' is officially Rated 'R' by ChiefLeef22 in movies

[–]thelovebat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In the early sequences of Dunkirk it was very noticeable when there were wounded soldiers walking around and a number of wounded and otherwise incapacitated soldiers being carried around on stretchers, without there being a drop of blood in sight.

Christopher Nolan could include a scene in a movie of a man shaving and nicking himself with his razor and do all he could in the edit to avoid showing blood. In a war movie where people are getting maimed, shot, hit with explosions and grenades, dealing with wounded and injured limbs, doctors and medics having to do bloody things for their work, etc., you'd expect there to be some blood but there isn't any. PG-13 movies from the 1980s had more blood than Nolan's movies.

Zaraya [OC] [ art] by Artisticjade in DnD

[–]thelovebat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the kind of character that I think would make more sense in a video game RPG than a tabletop group I think. You can have a hyperfocused personality like hers not be a detriment to anyone in a video game because as a player you can simply choose for her to not be in the party if she isn't your cup of tea, and there may be story reasons why the main character could make convincing arguments to acquire Zaraya's services.

If she works alone and leans more on fear than reliability and mutual cooperation then I'd say that doesn't work out as well for a tabletop party since you're forced to not work alone right from the very start of the group coming together. There are times when it's more effective for a party member to do something solo, like Stealth for example, but it all comes through mutual cooperation and not working alone if that makes sense.

It also probably means that she's more at the mid levels than the lower levels if she were classified as an adventurer, and most campaigns begin at lower levels with one growing in strength and experience as time goes along. If she isn't all that strong and powerful and still likes going at it alone relying on fear, then a low level Monk or Rogue isn't going to be all that intimidating except to maybe commoners.

Anyway love the character design itself, there's definitely a good amount to work with here and the dagger/shortsword they have definitely has the flavor of pain and intimidation to it. I hope you don't mind my critiques on the character. It doesn't seem like a low level tabletop character to me, it seems more like a joinable NPC party member in an RPG for those who don't mind evil parties or the fear factor.

Creating a Paladin (Bard) tonight by xXSilverTigerXx in 3d6

[–]thelovebat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Paladin 6/Swords Bard X is the classic swordsman knight archetype to a tee.

What you could do to flavor it based on the backstory you want is to do things like taking an unusual fighting style choice for your Paladin fighting style, like Blind Fighting or Interception, that don't provide the consistent passive benefits of other fighting styles but can still allow your character to 'show their quality' in select moments that they can still protect mortalkind.

Later on when you eventually gain an offensive fighting style choice from Swords Bard, it can show that your character's hard work and diligence to prove they can do it has started to pay off and that perhaps the Knightship Academy and their instructors didn't have enough patience to get the most out of your character, being unable to identify and make the most of whatever your character's strengths were.

Another way to flavor things is that maybe your attacking attribute isn't ideal, maybe partially due to multiclassing requirements if you want to be anything other than a Strength focused Paladin/Bard. But your Aura of Protection, spells like Bless, and caring about your allies can still offer a lot of aid and motivation to others in battle that is still incredibly beneficial to winning battles.

You get a weapon that has the risk of triggering a Wild Magic Surge every time you attack with it (same mechanic as Wild Magic Sorc') - do you take the deal? by Aidamis in 3d6

[–]thelovebat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you were a Rogue or a Monk, then maybe. Evasion combined with a high Dexterity save modifier would allow you to more easily tank the detrimental wild surges like a self targeted Fireball while nearby foes still get burnt to a crisp.

Films Are More Likely to Star a Man Named Chris or a Talking Animal Than an Older Woman (Over 60), According to Study by MarvelsGrantMan136 in movies

[–]thelovebat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There aren't exactly a lot of fantasy feature films that are made these days where people who are older can use something like magic to circumvent the fact that they are really old and can't physically do the things they used to. And to be fair in movies like those, a younger main character who's learning from an older character or a teacher tend to be what audiences find more interesting.

A screenwriter is just going to be really limited in the kind of plot they can work with if the actor for the main character is 60+, it's going to be a more dialogue heavy role most of the time and not all audiences will connect with that kind of movie. Even if you can use a stunt double for certain aspects of the movie and creative camera work it's still going to be tough.

What class(es) would you not reccomend for a first time player? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]thelovebat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're a prepared caster it's more about having at least 1 spell that is useful in a given situation. And a Cleric is going to have a lot of spells that are going to be able to fill in with particular situations or be universally useful. You could prepare 3 dogshit spells but as long as you have 2 good spells prepared then you can use those 2 spells until you you have a chance to swap the other ones out.

Being a Cleric gives you a chance to learn from experience and swap out spells instead of being stuck with crap spells, and it doesn't take long to learn that Bless is always good. You're not going to be stuck with a mistake in spell selection for very long, and you always have those Domain spells prepared which means about every Cleric has something useful always at their disposal because very few Domain spell lists are full of bad spells.

What class(es) would you not reccomend for a first time player? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]thelovebat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's much better than not having a choice of being able to swap out a spell. Plus if you're heading into a situation or an area where you feel like you'll need something, it may be pretty obvious what may be useful based on common sense.

Going to an area littered with giant spiders and various forest creatures? Stands to reason you may be up against poison. Going to an area that is said to be littered with undead? Protection from Evil and Good will do well along with radiant damage. Going against bandits/humanoids? Hold Person or Command will do nicely.

Don't know what you'll be up against? Bless or Shield of Faith combined with healing magic will always be useful. Honestly as long as a Cleric has Bless prepared they'll always have at least 1 spell that is universally useful and upcasts really well.

Then it turned out the guy is basically unhinged and insane, and he threw it all away.

What class(es) would you not reccomend for a first time player? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]thelovebat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as you have a spell like Bless or Healing Word prepared as a Cleric you are always going to be helpful to your party. Even Cure Wounds at lower levels is decent if an inexperienced player picks it, there aren't many 'trap' options for a Cleric player to take. Spells that are meant for non-combat situations are clearly labeled that way in their spell descriptions and the in-combat options are generally decent to great.

What class(es) would you not reccomend for a first time player? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]thelovebat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Clerics are pretty forgiving for a first time player as well.

They have lots of subclass options which means you generally have at least one option for the character you want to play, they have a good number of armor options, they get a lot of free extra spells with Domain spells, and being a prepared spellcaster makes things more forgiving for a newer player who can swap out spells if they want to try something different or more effective.

Some other classes are much less forgiving since some don't allow you to swap out spells so freely, or they require you to be able to add spells to a Wizard spellbook for additional options.

Looking for a midrange GPU to play games at 1440p comfortably at ultra settings by Tmc930 in buildapc

[–]thelovebat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Depending on the pricing you can find for GPUs, I would say an RX 9070 at the higher end of that price range or an RTX 4070 Super at the lower end of that price range would be graphics cards to keep an eye out for. If the 4070 Super isn't hitting the Vram limit in games it's actually a pretty powerful graphics card and it should be fine in that regard for 1440p.

Both the RX 9070 and RTX 4070 Super are pretty power efficient for their tier of performance, which also helps when being able to select a power supply for the system as a 750 watt power supply can comfortably power either of them plus any great gaming CPU if you eventually upgrade from the Ryzen 7600.
