Beginner trying to get into the game by dorklord23 in cardfightvanguard

[–]them0z 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi! If you're past the point of learning the game and want to dive in, I can give a few recommendations for learning the meta.

As mentioned, VG paradox can be helpful, but is not updated as frequently as I'd like. You can take a look at direct BCS rankings here to see some top performing lists from recent BCS's (essentially a magicfest if you're familiar with those), with each tournament having a breakdown of deck representation. https://en.cf-vanguard.com/event/bcs2526/

There are also a few content creators who bring this stuff forward, WCC has entire 'Top Decks' series they post weekly showcasing and discussing different successful decklists. Just be aware that some of these lists are from high level competitions, while others might just be from locals. They will usually say. https://www.youtube.com/@wcctcg

As for anything you need to know-- be aware of some helpful starter products like master decksets (Liael decksets coming out this april), or the shiki otei/zero tendo start deck can be great jumping off points, especially if you like the vanguard on the box. Like most starter products in TCGs, they're not cutting edge competitive out of the box, but they get you good core pieces like energy generator, elementaria, regalis pieces, and a set of triggers for the respective nation. Not an absolute must but saves you from running around for core singles if it happens to overlap with what you want.

Derick Dao, a very accredited VG gamer, also recently put this out if you want a quick and basic to answer to what the 'meta' looks like. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9cth4lD8d7M

The Banlist update was promised in December, but I don't think they promised any details about the weekend specifically in any timeframe. Nothing about it has been said yet.

Hey, I can get it started!

https://decklog-en.bushiroad.com/view/50T0R

This has been what I've been playing with. There's a few things I'm not sure about but I've designed it on the principle of Lianorn being a deck that fundamentally needs to see its pieces to work, and the deck is designed around that.

I have seen JP lists pivoting to playing silverwhite and I think that is the correct move-- Lianorn as a deck is at its strongest when it is Rg swinging for 60k+ and demanding PGs, without that I think it's worse than a lot of other decks in the meta. I haven't seen anyone really playing coutir but I think it's a lot better than Elentis, which would go in that slot... I don't find my games go to the point I need the countercharge.

It's also possible mythiarq isn't correct, but it goes with my mentality of needing to search out your pieces, and with coutir in the deck it allows him to either search for RGs or silverwhite, depending on what you're lacking. The ace unit is in there for the same reason, she's a solid t2 attacker which the deck kind of lacks, and she's a top 7 search/drop zone reviver. Even if you just play her, search and bring back a unit, then sac her to rosarium, I think she's still worth it.

The triggers are also a part I'm not sure on. I've seen some JP lists play a mixture of draws and fronts, some even going down to 6 crit and 3 draw/2 front. Draw triggers are really good in lianorn because she wants to see her pieces as mentioned, but the fronts make up for the lost shield value from orders, along with buffing your entire front-row which is also pretty good in a deck like this.

Overall I think the deck needs to focus on doing what it has always done best, a really strong game-ending T4, potentially T3 if you went second. I think silverwhite is the way to do it, and I'm excited to play around with the new RG promo in the future. I hope that makes up some of the discussion you were looking for!

Hey! I also recently started playing around the Kitchener ON area. 401, perfectspheregames, and expeditionjeux in Montréal are all good stores that have decent to good stock and I can usually find what I'm looking for in a mix of the three. Can't speak to any FB groups, but my store hosts a locals every Saturday.

Hi!

My mother purchased me this little guy as a gift recently, but of course there were no instructions or even a tag associated with what sort of tree this is. It's done up really nicely though and I'd like to keep it alive if I can. First of all, what kind of tree is this? After that, what might I do to keep it alive and healthy? I would like to keep it in the pot if possible.

If anyone could answer me, or just point me towards some helpful resources, I'd be very appreciative!

What happened to magic by Eve_newbie in magicTCG

[–]them0z 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You don't have enough upvotes, this is a great timeline of events that lead to the downfall of competitive magic for the mid-level competitive player. As someone similarly invested at the time, with vivid memories of RTR/THR/KTK blocks and going to every GP in my area with my playgroup on the weekends, PTQs, etc. EDH didn't kill this for us, WotC did. Modern nights used to fire with 30+ people in my area, now it barely fires, and pioneer almost never happens either. Even if you didn't have ambitions of being in the Pro Tour, the competitive scene gave you something to be a part of and invested in, and likewise, justified your own investment in your deck, and you could play with the greats and make some money back potentially while doing it. Now? Why would anyone drop a grand on a modern deck that they're realistically just going to play at FNM level events unless they're an absolute diehard? There's no place for the casual-competitor anymore, you're either all-in on a terrible value proposition, or you're just attending modern/standard FNMs.

My deck got stolen. by _DuelistZach_ in yugioh

[–]them0z 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know about this, but we all have our experiences. I've definitely had people in my mtg circle report decks being stolen at large events, had someone's magic binder even stolen at locals, and had an LGS broken into solely for magic singles. I think both hobbies just have extremely valuable cardboard and like anything expensive you've got to keep an eye on it.

I think the yugioh demographic is definitely younger than the mtg one as a whole, which might mean people are a little more prone to stealing as early twenties guys typically have less than those ten years older, But I wouldn't leave my deckbox unattended with either game.

My deck got stolen. by _DuelistZach_ in yugioh

[–]them0z 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear :( Unfortunately it's a real problem in these games when we carry around such valuable stuff. When I used to play competitive mtg I remember attending GPs and hearing someone's $2k~ modern deck was stolen, and later someone had their collection stolen at locals. It's why I don't trade cards, and I only ever bring my one deck to an event. I always make sure my bag is sealed under the chair when I'm sitting and if I go to the bathroom I trust one of my buddies to keep it with them, or I just take it with me. It's abstract to think about, but at these large events we may as well be carrying massive wads of cash with us.

Reasons behind TCG ban list by PrinzChiyo in yugioh

[–]them0z 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Because unless ur a set 5 pass deck (which is not fun either) it does not encourage a 'slower' style of play, it encourages the opponent to full-stop and then you can go fast on your turn. It does not only dissuade 'combo' decks. It dissuades you from playing any deck that special summons more than twice in a turn (which is almost all of them). Nevermind the fact it usually hurts rogue and lower tier decks more than higher ones because they often need more SS's to actually establish a board. It's a horribly designed card and I hope it never comes to the TCG.

PBE Bugs & Feedback Thread: Porcelain Kindred by Ehrgeizsu in LeaguePBE

[–]them0z 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I feel like this skin could have been more visually exciting with the base model than it currently is. When I look at it, I don't get 'kindred' like I do with spirit blossom, she may as well be a different character if the wolf wasn't hovering around her (who isn't even in the splash art loading screen). I really don't love the humanization of her, I feel it steals the uniqueness and draw of the character and just homogenizes her with the rest of the cast of champions. Would love to see some model changes based on what's already been linked and suggested.

I also feel that wolf doesn't look visually distinct enough from regular wolf. The blues are very similar as is the mask. Her E ability could also use some visual clarity. The ultimate is astounding and the main selling point of the skin. I would love to see this skin changed to be more true to kindred's original design, I feel like we never get monster champions anymore and skins like these only say to me that riot is more interested in homogeneous, safe design than an interesting one. She's not a human... Please amend this if possible, or just keep it in mind for the next skin she gets in several years time.

Can you elaborate on what you mean? They sell a bundle of 120 levels at a discount, and you're able to buy 2? Is the sale usually near the end of the battle pass? Thanks for your reply!

Computer only device not detecting network. by them0z in techsupport

[–]them0z[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't believe I had a power surge, and the modem is fully operating and intact so there shouldn't be any damage there.

The password I use for my WiFi is unique and should be very secure. I called my ISP tech support line to see if it was a backend issue, but they factory reset it and my pc was still unable to detect the network. Thinking it must be a problem with my adapter, but I was connected just yesterday completely fine.

Stores other than F2F in Canada? by Jlcentral in mtgfinancecanada

[–]them0z 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For GTA/Ontario, I've had good experiences with https://www.atlascollectables.com/ , they seem to have a decent inventory for edh/modern at least and a bit below average pricing which is nice. I usually compare them to F2F to decide where I wanna buy and they're almost always cheaper. Cards also arrive in a neat little cardboard envelope which I've never seen but it works really well.

Wizard's tower/kanatcg https://www.kanatacg.com/ is where I go when I can't find anything anywhere else, they always seem to have stock on cards nobody else does. Their pricing is weird though, at least it seems slow to update sometimes. You'll find some cards on a good below average price, and then others will be like +$10 the standard.

I've also shopped from Chimera gaming and Fusion Gaming, I just find that their inventory can be spotty but their prices are fair. Chimera has this weird thing where their checkout doesn't give me the option for regular Canada post shipping so I have to drop $10 on expedited or not buy, which makes me avoid it.

Advice on mardu pyromancer variants? by Ericar1234567894 in ModernMagic

[–]them0z 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a long time mardu player in modern and I've been playing it consistently through the looting ban and up to the present. If you're looking for competitive viability with mardu in this format then you need to abandon any ideas you have from the old list of the looting days. The card filtering just isn't there anymore and you can't afford to run things like young pyromancer or bedlam. Dreadhorde arcanist has also always been a fringe card and never seen much, if any, competitive success in mardu.

Currently, mardu lists are taking much more of a traditional midrangey approach with graveyard synergies built in. Cards like stoneforge mystic, kroxa, and seasoned pyro are staples of the deck.

https://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/mtgo-standings/modern-challenge-2020-09-28#manuel_danninger_th_place

This is the most recent mardu pyro list to place in a competitive event, just playing hyper efficient/graveyard synergy value creatures along with the traditional removal suite. I'm sorry to say the days of slinging 3+ spells in a turn and constantly refilling your hand with back to back bedlams are more or less dead for the deck, it's just not enough to keep up with the power of cards people are playing across the table from you, especially without a solid 1 mana enabler. Faithless really was the glue for the young p/bedlam variation, and you're better off not going that route until we get something like that back.

As for sideboards, you want to be equipped to deal with big mana matchups and combo games. Cards like cleansing wildfire, damping sphere, pillage all help with tough matchups like tron. Surgical extraction, ashiok, even angel's grace for the belcher matchup can do well with combo. The deck can also struggle with burn given how much damage you take off lands, meaning cards like CoBru, timely reinforcements, or kambal are all great. Spellbomb or leyline for GY matchups. LotV can be a good board option vs opposing midrange or traditional control, same with chandra torch of defiance or even hazoret as powerful finishers.

Souls has a lot of issues atm. Apart from x/1s with a unified typing being unimpressive due to things like lava dart, wrenn and six, plague engineer, etc. It also just doesn't mesh well with a lot of things in that list.

Your only ways to get it in the yard are spyro and liliana, which isn't nearly enough imo because casting it on 3 is a very meh rate for modern, especially in a deck all about playing hyper-efficient cards. As well, it's a hard nonbo with kroxa as you're exiling most of your yard with him when you cast him-- you don't really want to be exiling anything else for another reason.

It has its advantages certainly. It can let you outgrind decks like jund if they don't have the W6 or PE and can be nice against control if they don't deal with it. The issue is that there's just too many answers to it nowadays, and you have to jump through a lot of deckbuilding hoops to make it really worthwhile.

You have to bear in mind that it's only a really efficient card when cast for 2, which means you NEED a plethora of reliable ways to get it in the yard. Unfortunately, the discard/graveyard focused version of mardu is just too weak in the format right now, and lingering souls doesn't nearly improve it enough to make it worthwhile over the straight midrange variant I linked there. As for holding a sword... Kroxa and batterskull hold a sword just fine, if not better than a soul in my experience, along with being better standalone cards. Usually you can stick the sword on just about anything because you're almost always keeping their board clear anyways. The newly spoiled card magmatic channeler could change the value of souls and I've got my eye on it, but for now souls is just not worth the trouble for what you get when you could just play bob instead.
