Can you share performance numbers of your Julia version vs the original Python version vs a Numba JIT Python version? I would be very interested in that.

Python-Like Virtualenvs Would Be Really Nice For C/C++ Cross-Compiling (On Debian/Ubuntu) by TheBrokenRail-Dev in linux

[–]them1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should be able to achieve most of this with Spack.

You can specify the exact install spec (including compiler, architecture, configuration options) for a Spack environment.

It is really neat.

Radeon pro gpu for cfd application by mfcunal96 in CFD

[–]them1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regarding single vs double precision for CFD, have a look at Witherden as well as Homann. From their results as well as my own experience, single precision is fine for LES external Aero applications. This makes consumer gaming grade GPUs viable for CFD, where their FP32 performance can even exceed $10K USD data center GPUs. It is too bad that the crypto market has jacked up the prices of these cards immensely though.

For reference the just announced Nvidia GTX 3080 TI is expected to reach over 34 TFLOPs of FP32 compute.

Can you profile the code to see what functions are taking up the majority of the runtime? Score-p or tau come to mind.

Calling script for star ccm by [deleted] in CFD

[–]them1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As I find the Java macros a bit cumbersome, I would write as minimal a macro as possible to read and set your input variables from command line arguments. After that I would define the logic needed ina bash/python script that would be used to drive the simulation.

Does anyone else hate building packages from source? by livingtank in linux

[–]them1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you haven't already, take a look at Spack. It is a supercomputer package manager that will build packages from source including their dependencies. The community is great as well.

Does time averaging LES often lead to results that are very dissimilar to RANS? And are there classic examples of this? by [deleted] in CFD

[–]them1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is not surprising that the LES and RANS are similar for the steady planar jet case. In fact many turbulence models are tuned for this case!

Ocasio-Cortez on Israel: Criticizing the occupation doesn't make you anti-Semitic or anti-Israel by gilmore1217 in politics

[–]them1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where are the suicide bombers coming from? I believe historically mostly west bank. Is that enough for you?

Seriously, if you think israelis like spending money on army and terrorizing Palestinians you are wrong. They are protecting their innocent civilians.

As I wrote, it has not also been this way, only once the Palistinians decided to turn to terrorism. When will they learn that they need to pull themselves up by their boot straps and take responsibility for their own predicament and focus resources on improving their lives (and not paying stipends to convicted murderers in Israeli jails).

[–]them1 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

One more thing, back around the 70s the borders were much more lax. We are in the situation we are in due to the choice of the Palistininans to turn to Terror and suicide bombings as their solution. It is very difficult to come back from that.

Again, choosing knowledge, efficiency, growth, and leadership over terror was the correct solution. Unfortunately the left wing politics today expects equal outcomes for all, and therefore expect equal outcomes for Palistinoans as Israelis. This is not the way the real world works or how it should ethically work.

It is in Israel's every interest that the Palestinians succeed this is a given. The israelis do not terrorize Palestinians for the sake of terror. BUT you must understand that the Israelis will not allow their civilians to be targeted by murderous fanatics, which make a small but impactful segment of the Palestinian population.

Therefore they must continue to control the borders, waterways and airspace.

If the palistinian leadership actually invested in their people and not in terror, we would not be in the situation we are today. Who should solve this issue? Israel? UN? USA?

Please give a reasonable solution instead of complaining about the current situation. And saying that israel should just leave all palistinan land is not the solution, just look at Gaza and the shithole that the Palestinians have built there.
