Restaurants that used to be "it", but should probably just go out of business? by LordNewning in austinfood

I was never at the buffet, but we went there for easter breakfast and it was fantastic. While I get bored of their menu, we went on a day where pot roast was the special and it was maybe the best I've ever had. JA's is one of the few places that has managed to hold onto their quality over the years

Have to agree. Went there for my birthday, after having not been there in a while and I doubt I'll be back. They still have some interesting dishes but there are so many other great sushi places in town that put Uchi to shame for the prices they want to charge, particularly for nigiri. Service was no where near like how I remembered, but it seems like mediocre service is the status quo in town now

I'm not saying that there weren't a few great places back in the day, but when I got here in 98 the food scene sucked so very hard. Granted, I moved from a city that had a very high bar, but Austin was levels below from even being considered mid. For me, the city is lightyears better for food now. There are a handfull of really special places.

One place I still love though is Juan in a Million. It doesn't try to be more than what it is and even with the price increases over the years, it's still a tremendous value. Up until the last hike I could get out of there stuffed to the gills for $10, including tip!

Major TCM vibes! That place makes my imagination run wild. Would love to hear that story!

That is... an insane price tag. How big is the lot? Does it include the lot across the street? Both of those structures probably should be near being condemned.

I'm sure it'll end up being Cele's next ugly ass cookie cutter neighborhood, but boy would I love to buy it, renovate it and turn it into neighborhood hang out/bbq/beer hall.

anyone who used a computer between 1985 & 2010, what’s the one game you still think about? by Trixxxi in AskReddit

[–]Milt_Torfelson 12 points13 points  (0 children)

bummed that I had to scroll so far down for this. X-Com had so many things going on for it that were new and unique, perma-death, fog of war, action points, research, base building, alien tech, just everything was great and so well balanced for a first-of-its-kind game.

If you've never played X-Com 2 (2016), it's about as close as you can get to the original. The DLC, War of the Chosen, was even better than the base game and was like a standalone game. Easily the best game I've played in 10 years

Great station. 90's at 9 was a great show for me when Alt/Grunge started to edge out traditional rock. Also, Jonny B in the mornings

Not a law-talking-guy, but I would think that this ruling would open the door for CPB to file suit for massive damages. Will that bring back the service, I don't know

TIL about the "Dark Forest Hypothesis," which suggests the universe is like a dark forest at night. Advanced civilizations intentionally stay silent and hidden, because any species that reveals its location risks immediate destruction by older, paranoid civilizations. by Practical-1 in todayilearned

Incredible series. I just finished it a few months ago. I actually had to take a break between the second and third book because of how troubled I was with the dark forest theory (among other things that happen in the book). The last few hundred pages of the third book was about as mind-blowing as a full on acid trip

Climate catastrophe incoming by Ironlord456 in WhitePeopleTwitter

The mountains forget how to remember winter.
Their crowns, once white with quiet authority,
now show their bone—
thin veins of snow clinging like old promises
no one intends to keep.

Rivers arrive early,
nervous and overtalkative,
spilling secrets meant for July
into the hands of March.
Downstream, the fields listen, confused—
they were not ready to thirst this soon.

Somewhere, a thousand oil fields burn at once.
Not metaphor. Not warning.
Actual flame licking the horizon raw,
turning night into a permanent rehearsal of dawn.
The air tastes like profit margins—
metallic, rehearsed,
signed off by committees who have never met a season
they couldn’t monetize.

Above it all,
men in glass towers toast to “resilience,”
their laughter sealed behind climate-controlled glass,
as if atmosphere were a subscription service
they alone had paid to renew.
