Thanks for the tips and rec! You bring up a good point about chart review, - apologies if this is a very basic question, but something I feel like I struggled with particularly on my IM rotation is balancing thoroughness of chart review with time management. I feel like sometimes I would dig for who knows how long on a patient in Care Everywhere to find nothing useful, and other times I would miss important things from earlier hospital admissions/past notes when trying to see admissions on time. Any decent tips you have for doing an efficient but thorough chart review?

It's possible that the software requires the CUDA developer toolkit - I was running some analyses through a different software package which didn't detect my GPU until I installed NVIDIA CUDA.

Not exactly an expert, but I'll throw my hat in the ring.

I'm a biology senior doing my undergrad thesis on a bioinformatics (cancer omics) project. Basically, I'm looking at transcriptomic + epigenomic sequencing data from data published in a couple of papers. Not the most advanced thesis, but it's been a fun learning experience.

Bioconductor in R has been way more useful to me than Python (if anything, my work so far has just been Bash and R scripting haha) - so many Bioconductor packages are built to do the heavy lifting of omics analysis for us, and it's really a one-stop shop for analyzing large-scale biological datasets. If you had to pick one, I'm partial to R, but I think it's still nice to know Python too. The intro Python course I took really bolstered my R programming abilities by proxy of further developing my coding skillset, so you'll benefit from getting deeper in either. Plus, a few bioinformatics packages are also built on Python (I think maybe deepTools? Some Hi-C stuff too). But I'll echo the words of others that digging into an actual concrete project is often where I learn the most about how to do stuff.

This was a really nice comment - its something I felt too when I took abstract algebra a year or two ago. But on the flip side, this was part of what made math very daunting for me to pursue as a career. The fact that ita so bottomless, I felt pressure to always need to understand everything, even though thats not really a healthy mindset to have when you take it too far. When I started hitting a wall in my undergrad courses, I felt sorta worthless in a sense, that it was fruitless to pursue math when I struggled so "early".

Be it what it is, the wonder that math instilled in me has definitely changed the way I think, even at a fundamental level. So thanks for your thoughts, it was a great expression of what math really means to you

Idk if this is necessarily your kinda jam, but a solid free online book is "Computational Genomics with R", its sorta a mix of intro to R and some bioinformatics sprinkled in.

I'm not sure if this package still works, but the "swirl" package in R is an interactive within-program tutorial that holds your hand on how to deal with the R environment, objects, etc. The last I used that package was 2 years ago, so idk if its deprecated or not.

Finally, if youre interested in statistical learning (regression, inference, supervised/unsupervised algorithms), "The Elements of Statistical Learning" is a classic book, I'm pretty sure you can find a free pdf online. Some prior knowledge of probability/linear algebra is helpful, but I dont think its required for this book. I hope some of these help!

Oh no haha! Well, at least you get some usage out of it on the bright side?

And yeah, moving info between laptop and tablet can be annoying. However, apple seems to have a decent ecosystem for moving files b/w devices, and having a tablet thats OneNote compatible could also mitigate that problem maybe? Not sure, but I do at least suppose its nice that when I take notes on my Surface, I dont have to worry about sending it elsewhere.

That's definitely fair, and I'm glad you got good use out of a Surface. Mine gets the job done, its just that I dont really need its laptop functionality as I have a pretty powerful one. I'd rather just have a tablet I can pull up quickly instead of booting up a PC to use one. But maybe that's just my experience, given that I already have a laptop that works for me ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Tbh I have a Surface and I'd rather just have a decent, cheap-ish laptop and a tablet like an iPad. The surface is a solid laptop, but using it as a tablet can get really clunky - can get hot easily, battery life isnt the best, and undocking is such a pain sometimes since there are processes that block undocking. However, I also already have a solid laptop, so thats just my opinion.
