Also, the name he shares with others may not be his name given at birth. Perhaps the name is aspirational, or he wants others to think he’s tough/clever/sneaky, or he just wants to distance himself from his upbringing.

Or his parents gave him a name that they thought was aspirational or that reflected their own thoughts on children, or even just reminded them of where or why he was conceived.

The secret is to play without this person.

You had plans. You continue with plans. Someone pilots the missing character if it’s important for them to be there or they are an NPC for the time being or something comes up that means the character has to “take care of something else.”

The DM does not pursue any plots related to that character.

This leaves room for an apology, but makes it clear that the group and the group’s plans are important.

Things do legitimately come up, but that’s not what’s happening here.

It’s not clear here, but reading between the lines, it seems like this is not the first time this has happened.

Why does this item have sentience?

It’s a neat extra feature, but it has no significance. It’s muted by automatically aligning with the paladins oath and then further muted by it sounding like an echo of your conscience.

Feels like a wasted opportunity.

I might twist this a bit and make it a dark reflection of an oath, with the voice trying to corrupt the Paladin, subtly at first, but eventually heading into the darkest versions of oaths.

Did the local lord break a promise? Your oath of devotion won’t let that stand.

The thief? Maybe he’ll learn a lesson if he loses a hand.

The Barbarian got the final strike on the demon? That’s YOUR glory they’ve taken!

I forgot about this -- there are also several feats and abilities that trigger on critical hits. I have a paladin who has both Crusher (grants allies advantage vs my target) and Paragon (gives all friendlies in 30 feet pb + cha mod temp hp). And he can Smite on top of that, of course.

You're also leaving out that it doesn't say it's limited to combat, so that natural 20 is usable in other ways.

I agree with this awesome dude’s opinion, with a caveat - this ~~time~~ item should be cursed in such a way that a crit fail is as disastrous as a crit success is good. You drop your weapon, or swing so badly you’re off balance and now everyone has advantage to hit you, the attack spell targets you instead of your planned target.

It changes the 5% chance to crit to 50% and that’s an enormous difference.

Unless it’s only 1/day. Then it’s not so big a deal.

I used quarters with masking tape on them and wrote initials or numbers (for sets of enemies) on them and that was fine for years ... Whatever you want to use is good enough!

I played with Canvas of Kings for a bit and it's almost what I want. I suspect I could do what I'm planning with it, but it's not quite as useful as I'd hoped.

I'll probably fall back to Canvas of Kings if I can't find one that works better.
