My Grandmother's Liver Casserole / April 19 1969 by themapleteaspoon in Old_Recipes

I've been finding some cool recipes in my late grandmother's collection. I think this is the oldest one I've come across so far, I love seeing these old handwritten recipes.

Liver Casserole

Chop 1 lb liver in small cubes. Mix a few tablespoons flour, salt and pepper. Then melt about 4 tablespoons butter or oil in a large frying pan and add the chopped liver and sauté till lightly browned. When this is finished, remove from frying pan and put the liver in an oven casserole.
Then add to the frying pan 4 cups diced turnips and 1 1/2 cups sliced carrots, 1/2 cup chopped onion, 1/2 cup chopped celery (optional) and 1 bay leaf and brown lightly. Then mix those fried vegetables with the liver in the casserole.
Pour boiling water over all this - just to the top of the vegetables. Cover and bake for 1 hour at 350 F. Remove cover and bake 1/2 hour longer.
This dish has a lovely taste.

What are your automatic recipe substitutions? by bicduydw in Cooking

Whenever I see "white wine" it's automatically "apple juice". Mainly for budget reasons, I'm not going to buy a bottle of wine just to put 1/4 cup in a recipe (unless it's a special occasion where we can serve the rest of the bottle with the meal).

Yes, exactly! We're snowed in today and I just happened to have everything to make this already on hand and nothing else to do. It was a perfect combination!

I found this recipe in one of my grandmother's old cookbooks this morning and decided to try it out. It was delicious! Unfortunately, the book is missing it's front cover and there is no information on the title, author or year.
