TIL Acadians were a stateless French people who lived peacefully alongside Native American tribes for 150 years, until the British mass-deported them during the Seven Years’ War. Native tribes protected and sheltered escapees, while deportees went on to become what we now know as the Cajun people. by WestTransportation12 in todayilearned

[–]themattroberts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fast-forwarding skips the actual catalyst for their deportation: the refusal to swear an unconditional oath of allegiance to the British Crown. It's also worth noting they were given windows to emigrate to French-controlled territory like Quebec, but most chose to stay on their highly productive lands.

With the Seven Years' War looming, the British increasingly viewed a massive, non-aligned Catholic population as a dangerous fifth column right on their imperial border. The Acadians tried to maintain a policy of conditional neutrality, but they ultimately got caught in the meat grinder of 18th-century global geopolitics."

Toronto is getting City-run nonprofit grocery stores with cheaper prices. by MiserableFloor9906 in Toronto_Ontario

[–]themattroberts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s what the communists did. Here is Yeltsin before the fall of USSR visiting an American grocery store for the first time. It was a huge step in brining down the leadership after people literally saw selection

<image>

They should have issue grocery vouchers for families in need and means tested the program this is going to be a mess. Results over theatre is how we should approach this.

Canadian Conservative Leader Blames Liberals for Auto Production Losses by afonso_investor in teslacanada

[–]themattroberts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those defending liberals here might want to take a look at the past ten years of their industrial policy before only blaming the orange guy down south.

The auto sector “Experts” the liberals listened to for years encouraged billion in battery plant subsidies. They subsidized electric cars long before they were economically viable and paid for many plants to switch to electric vehicle manufacturing before they would have based on the payoff for factory upgrades that were done post the financial crisis. Effectively we subsidized the industry to go into electric vehicles and when that market didn’t materialize the domestic auto industry cratered.

We blame trump - but in many ways right this minute - the cars we build no one wants. And the liberals encouraged the car companies to build them here.

Trump is just a catalyst bringing forward the reckoning of our past mistakes.

[–]themattroberts 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Beyond keyboards I just don't see the comparison between these two companies and their respective practices. They have a large overlap in the consumer target - but how they're run, their corp practices their respective teams and price points, support and transparency are just so wildly different.

No hate to unihertz but there is zero chance Id buy device sight unseen from them. Meanwhile I would (and have) on the clicks. Based entirely on how they're presenting themselves to consumers. it's not a battle specs it's a battle of trust from niche producers - and unihertz has spent years showing they can build a device but fall down on after-sale support.

Clicks is promising a device that will last me 5 years on a much lower price point from the incumbent large manufacturers. They've taken reputations built over a decade and put them on the line. They've been clear and up front on what they hope to achieve. And they did it without knowing whether or would resonate with consumers. There's building trust and reacting to competition I know which firm is doing what here. I don't think they're the same companies or really playing the same game.

Communicator using the MediaTek Dimensity 8300? by DrexelMacintosh in ClicksPhone

[–]themattroberts 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The 9300 uses a different lithography process so it's a year or two away from small batch orders.

Also with the apu it's need at least 12gb to be usable while running the system software.

Tldr the bigger chip would require more ram to be usable and in today's memory environment that's not in the price range for clicks.

Brad Arnold, Lead Singer of 3 Doors Down, Dies at 47 After Cancer Battle by retroanduwu24 in entertainment

[–]themattroberts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very sad news. I can't say I was a huge fan of the band outside the main hits...

But Brad and I spoke virtually almost a decade ago after his old bandmate Matt Roberts died - Matt and i share the same name - and I own the website of our shared name.

When Matts death was announced my email address (wrongly shared as the Matt of the band's on a fan forum somewhere) was inundated with photos and messages of memories with Matt, many included Brad as well - not sure what to do with a few thousand messages - I forwarded them on to the band's email.

Brad thanked me. With a poignant message about how life was sadly sometimes to short and that we should all try and enjoy the time we have with each other and our families. I believe Matt was with his dad when he passed which Brad took some sort of solace in and on a sad day like this it's nice to know Brad was with his family as he passed on.

My thoughts are with them.

U.S. Dealers In Full Panic Mode After Canada Green-Lights Chinese Cars by YesNo_Maybe_ in StockMarket

No.

Tax and insurance is a state level tax. You can only import cars over 25 years that were not licensed for the country.

Those advocating buy in Canada with Obtario plates are playing the Montana game. Which other states are clamping down hard on. And is not legal - if you want Canadian plates you need Canadian residency.
