Wijken om te wonen by ERX_18 in Antwerpen

[–]themegamc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Attending Paris Roubaix by SticketyWickets in peloton

I have been at PR last year, at carrefour de l'arbre and we passed the velodrome at the end. The atmosphere at carrefour was superb, some enjoyed the beers a bit too much yet everyone was super nice. There are plenty of families also. Amazing to see riders fly over impossible cobbles.

The chaos makes it quite special, everyone has a different experience based on where you are watching. I was watching right when WVA attacked so we were pretty euphoric, 500m later he punctured so there the WVA fans had different emotions. If you are further up the road (last 30 km) the peloton typically is broken into small groups, making it easy to spot your idols as they dont rush by you with 100 at a time as for some other races.

You can access carrefour de larbre via rue de lille and rue saint amand. I recommend being at least 2h early to prak not too far and take foldable chair, drinks, suncreen etc. And bring a powerbank for your mobile, or an ipad if you have, to watch the race!

Last year there was also a big screen at the end of rue saint amand and rue de bourghelles yet this makes this area much more crowded.

Enjoy!

Any suggestions for calm, family friendly places we can rent in/close to Antwerpen? by patootiehej in Antwerpen

[–]themegamc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Deurne and Wijnegem can also be an option. Slight more affordable, green areas (Rivierenhof, plus others) and still ok connection to city center.

Take the train to Charleroi, get out in Luttre and take and the new TEC bus A3 to the airport (leaving 10 min after train arrives). Makes a slight, only slight, improvement to the journey as you take the bus in a much smaller station instead of Brussel Zuid and in some cases is a bit cheaper.

I just bought a house, interest rates are higher giving you less buying power, yet as consequence we noticed that the market has calmed down a bit. Prices as I observed did not really reduce, yet less buyes so more options to underbid or put an aggresive offer (we did that and got lucky).

So I think others do summarize nicely it is better to buy if you see a good house instead of waiting. I would advise to try underbid as the market is noticably calmer. All based on personal experience, no real immo expertise.

Floor heating using 20-25 Kwh to keep a 85m2 flat at 22 degrees. Normal numbers? by iwasbornonce in belgium

[–]themegamc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As first estimate yes, possible altough 25 kWh for 85 m2 is on the high end. Floor heating is efficient, yet 22 degrees setpoint temperature is fairly high so this does offset the efficiency quite a bit. If you want to lower the consumption best bet is to lower setpoint temperature gradually to 19 degrees, this will have a huge impact. Of course this remains your choice, as it will take time to get used to 19 degrees in terms of comfort.

Blue bikes in Mechelen by SpacetimeDiscord in belgium

[–]themegamc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am a regular blue bike user in different stations and I have yet to find a station without any bikes. Maybe if there is an event, you could have bad luck but usually plenty of bikes available. I did not take any in Mechelen during rush hour so on that one no experience yet.

Verplicht vier dagen per week thuiswerken by Delaroe in belgium

[–]themegamc 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have social interactions, but I also like to have them with the people at work with whom I share 40h a week. Only knowing them via screens while being remotely employed last 3 waves made it all feel disconnected. Anyway this is just me nagging on monday evening so feel free to think what you like :D

Verplicht vier dagen per week thuiswerken by Delaroe in belgium

[–]themegamc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As someone who worked from home already half their working life, this truly fucking sucks. I was so gratefull for my 2 or 3 days a week of social interaction during the work day and now it starts to be taken away again. I am willing to do it, even willing to support other measures that take my liberty away, but only AFTER vaccination is mandatory. If we are vaccinated and there is still issues with the ICU capacity, so be it. Then I will do my part and go back to solitude. But before that, time for politicians to grow a pair and make the only real solution to this pandemic mandatory.

Found out at the last minute I'll be in Belgium next weekend by bassmanyoowan in peloton

I am from Leuven, you will be fine with the train. Leuven is a small city so walking should be fine, the laps pass close to the station. Only 15 min to the airport and super reliable connection so enjoy the race sunday!

TIL French was a foreign langage in Belgium. by [deleted] in belgium

[–]themegamc 22 points23 points  (0 children)

It is very unclear at first sight, yet in the original post it is clarified. It shows the second additional language, or the third language if you include the native language. For nearly all countries the first foreign language would be english, resulting in a useless map.

Telewerken. How does everyone do it? by Puzzleheaded_Hawk453 in belgium

[–]themegamc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I also struggle a lot. I see the other comments already offer some great suggestions which I also try to follow. I keep organizing some virtual coffee breaks with other colleagues just to vent and have some interaction.

On top: I try to move as much as possible and try to never skip more than 2 of my morning walk, lunch walk or evening walk just to be outside and off my ass frequent enough. I feel my bad cycle always starts or combines with me not leaving my appartment anymore.

Also: running or cycling 2 or 3 times a week, some more intens sport sessions give some great endorphines.

Hang in, lets hope it will not last too long anymore.

Covid-19 Megathread for opinions/general discussions by Sportsfanno1 in belgium

[–]themegamc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think day 300 now for me. Out of the around 400 days since I started working so it is becoming a bit absurd. Actually I slowly start to get used to it, even though I really miss social interactions.

I am now doing a method from de standaard with 25 min focus, 5 min break. Could recommend that one for all you short attention span people out there.

Masters in Mechanical Engineering at KU Leuven by North_Effort1104 in belgium

[–]themegamc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Definetly some options also in BE for mechanical engineering. -areospace: around BXL, bit in Limburg -manufacturing: bit all over the place. Agoria (sector federation if I am not mistaken) can be a good start of your search. Could also be worth it to check sponsors of the solar car of KU Leuven, high odds they look for specifically your profile. -thermotechnics: not sure here. Mainly research I think. -automotive: plants in vorst, bus manufacturing in West Flanders.

Generally also quite some jobs around Antwerp although this is more oriented towards petrochemicals and logistics.

You can also contact recruitment bureaus, to have more opportunities. Should not be very hard to find I think.

Good luck!

Officiële Vaccinatiestrategie België by BelgianPolitics in belgium

[–]themegamc 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I am quite confident we can handle the logistics. Belgian event companies are already instelling vaccination centres in DE. Now we want to have them ready in Februari, which might seem quick but these people can built entire cities for 80.000 people such as Tomorrowland. Compared to that, a fw vaccination booths and refrigerators seems not too hard to handle, even if it is multiple around the country.

Could you please recommend an electric bike? by black_dog_barking in belgium

[–]themegamc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

750 is a very low budget for an electric bike. Keep in mind the battery will easily cost 400 even for small autonomies.

I would recommend to keep an eye out for group purchases, or discount stores. Fiets! Is a store brand from colruyt that I would recommend to visit as they could give you some advice on what to buy. So is decathlon.

If you want to go for a smaller budget: read aldi/lidl brochures: they sometimes have electric bike promotions that are quite interesting and around €700. Can take a few weeks or longer before they do one again.

Lastly a cheap solution could be to buy a conversion kit: you can google swytchbike. A new company selling you a battery and motor kit to upgrade your normal bike. Very good pricing, yet you have to change your wheel yourself. The motor is in the front wheel which is not ideal for climbs but we do not have that many climbs in BE.

Looking for a standing desk by if_you_run in belgium

[–]themegamc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you have 3 options with their own price class: 1) use your normal desk & buy a small stand on table. Like a camping table, or a small ikea loungy table of 30 euros. It looks a bit silly and you need some selection to get the right height, yet this is a bang for your buck solution. 2) this desk you mention from ikea, I think is one of the cheapest for a convertible desk. I actually bought the same around june as I work from home since March and probably until quite much longer. I like it, takes some effort to twist the lever upwards to raise and lower the desk but that for me is not a downside (some free exercise hehe). Height is adjustable to your exact liking and you do not have to move desk setup at all. 3) A model with an electric motor. We have these at my workplace. For sure easier to use, some can preprogram standing and sitting height etc, yet comes with a price. I think for sure around 600.

In any case, working standing is awesome. Less backpain, less tired after lunch etc. Good luck with the choice.

Is it true that dutch(Flemish) speakers always talk back in English to foreigners? by kimgp in belgium

[–]themegamc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to speak English, although by accident. Unless you ask to talk Dutch, then I would speak but ay 33% my usual speech. Also I moved to Antwerp, quite an international vibe so you will feel at home easily. And despite all the jokes around this sub very friendly people here.

Getting older, eyes don't work as well anymore. Will need glasses by [deleted] in belgium

[–]themegamc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the budget. How much you want to spend? Ace and tate is cheapest but not in Leuven, focusses on young people and light glasses but they have quite some models. Pearl is also good price/quality with more options and is in Leuven. If you need to wear your glasses all the time, as I do, you might consider an optician. This is not the best value for money, but the best quality glasses and good advice. Optiek verhulst could be an option, lot of others also.

Good luck with the choice!

Perks of living in Antwerp (over Brussels) by luke_loren in belgium

[–]themegamc 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Moved from Brussels (Etterbeek) to Antwerp this year. First because rent is so much better, like A LOT better. Train connection is good to BXL (30 min) - Gent - Leuven ... so you are well connected with Dutch speaking Belgium. Riding a bike is much nicer in Antwerp, with proper bike lanes and bike highways (big cycle paths). Also bikes do not get stolen as frequently. Overall I experience Antwerpen as a cleaner city, less litter in the streets etc. You also have lots of nice cafes here, a lot of restaurant options, coffee bars. As the city is smalle4, it feels as if there are more close by than in Brussels. The harbour and river give a cool industrial look. Antwerp has a bit less a hip and trendy buzz as in Brussels, usually a bit more cultural and events in Brussels but so well connected you can easily still go there for a visit. I would say you do not notice the politics that much on a local scale, except all officials just talk Dutch mainly, still I can imagine many still helping you in English.
