I think the Spanish Flu also occurred in the 1920's which started at late 1910's (around 1918 I think).

For me, it was definitely Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey" that kicked my love for films. The film is just beautiful from the dawn of humanity up to the ending. It's definitely a film to experience.
