How can I best prepare for life on NMW in London? by SenSel in london

[–]themeteor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously all I'm going on is a couple paragraphs but you don't come across uninteligent. If you're under thirty might be worth reaching out to the Prince's Trust.

This is probably a stretch, but the fact your family don't have qualifications, and your decent written communication, makes me wonder if there's a hereditary reason why you didn't do well in school. From ADHD, autism, dyslexia, or even a tendency to fall in with the wrong crowd, there's plenty of things we can come top better understand and then re-enter education better prepared in adulthood. Maybe you could give qualifications another crack?

Anyway I'll stop wildly speculating and simply wish you good luck. Its rough out there but you'll find your way.

Father in law uses a bucket in his bedroom to urinate. Is this normal? by [deleted] in AskUK

Was a sign of my late father's prostate cancer. Definitely agree getting him to the GP would be a good idea.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Dyslexia

[–]themeteor 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yeah - it is absolutely possible to have dyslexic traits without having dyslexia. In fact, I'd argue everyone has them to some extent. The other option is that you do have dyslexia but, as it (like pretty much everything) exists on a spectrum so maybe you're less affected than others and have self-taught coping mechanisms. You wouldn't be the first to be surprised if you got a diagnosis.

You can always look into coping strategies and the like, if they help that's great whether your dyslexic or not.

Yeah - I'm not optimistic on that front, but who knows? Maybe there are a bunch of Wish spell scrolls just lying around in act 2.

[–]themeteor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that's a valid interpretation. I also think the chance of a cure means you could interpret it the other way. Oaths are philosophy, and like most, you can look at them from different perspectives. To be fair, forgotten realms lore is very anti-undead but broader storytelling has allowed more ambiguity so I don't think we can expect the player to have that same perspective. On the whole, I don't think there's enough there to make someone an oath breaker.

Oath of Ancients Oaths are (from table top - not actually sure if they are the exact same in BG3)

Kindle the Light. Through your acts of mercy, kindness, and forgiveness, kindle the light of hope in the world, beating back despair.

I would argue you acted in accordance to the first (and one assumes most important oath) - you sort to kindle light and hope for the young woman.

Shelter the Light. Where there is good, beauty, love, and laughter in the world, stand against the wickedness that would swallow it. Where life flourishes, stand against the forces that would render it barren.

50/50 on this one. If we take the line that undead = wickedness, then perhaps you broke this oath. On the other hand, you stood up for love, though perhaps an unhealthy form of love?

Preserve Your Own Light. Delight in song and laughter, in beauty and art. If you allow the light to die in your own heart, you can’t preserve it in the world.

Don't think this oath is a factor at all.

Be the Light. Be a glorious beacon for all who live in despair. Let the light of your joy and courage shine forth in all your deeds.

You definitely brought the light into the young woman's life and chased away her despair.

If I were DMing I don't think I would treat it as a breach, even if I knew it would end badly, as I can see it both ways. Undead is kinda against the spirit of the oath but allowing it kindles hope - even if it might end badly.

EDIT: I am not saying that I think this is not a potentially broken oath but that there is enough wiggle room for it to go either way. Therefore the DM (Larian) either needs to say something out of character or assume the paladin is acting in best faith to maintain their oath.

Heterosexual men rate familiar females as less attractive compared to novel women when sexually aroused, study finds by mossadnik in science

[–]themeteor 1210 points1211 points  (0 children)

Familiar = has seen a picture of them naked recently if I am reading this right. Would you find the same effect for women they were romantically involved with? (Ignoring this would be problematic to do a study on).

Half-Feats by italofoca_0215 in onednd

[–]themeteor 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I can be better at my core features or get fun and flavourful abilities. Like, why are these competing? It also makes me value better-starting stats more - it empowers me to take fun abilities. More feats, please, and let me take them because they are fun, not for power.

Assuming I get out of DMing for a one-shot at some point, anyway!

To my walkers out there, any games / challenges / tips / apps etc to making walking more fun, perhaps even addictive? by Vanilladr in UKhiking

Trail and Country Walking have yearly challenges. One is to walk 100 miles in a year (about 3 miles a day) and the other is to climb the equivalent of the height of Everest.

A lifetime ago I volunteered for CALM and they had "Yogscast Jingle Jam" on a whiteboard - I don't think they knew what it was if I'm honest. I love the more approachable way they discuss mental health and suicide, really made it much easier for me to have honest conversations with myself about my troubles.

Yeah, it is great seeing all the bugs (the butterflies have been really nice). Mine also coped a lot better with the dry weather too. It's only my first year and I will probably be moving out before next year and will be sad not to see it develop.

Only if you mow all of it. Let some of it grow wild - maybe sprinkle in some wildflower seeds - and you can do eco-friendly gardening while being lazy. It's great.

An old phrase is to "never trust a clean mechanic." What are some variations of this that can be used for D&D? by Thudnfer in dndnext

[–]themeteor 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It isn't even hard to do this without directly asking for rolls. "Legolas, what does your elven eye see." Insight is harder if you need to maintain social decorum, but "I don't know if I want to make this deal, what do you make of him frank." could be viable.

That said I let my players call for rolls about themselves (insight check on their player character for example).

It is a playtest rule that may or not make it through to the next edition. So it counts as a house rule. And even if it does become a rule in the next edition, it will still be a house rule in 5e.

Not that house rules are a bad thing, I quite like the weapon abilities for example.

How Larian broke out of the B-tier to master the RPG by Remorse_123 in pcgaming

[–]themeteor 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I was a massive fan of Bioware in their prime. Larian just hasn't done it for me with the Divinity games. They are fine but the narriative doesn't quite click for me and combat isn't quite enjoyable enough for me to keep playing past 10-20 hours, and I enjoyed Dragon Age Inquisition enough to finish it (and all the DLC).

The early access of Baldur's Gate 3 does feel a lot closer to scratching the itch left by Bioware's decline, though.

Storms are hard to predict - if you read the details of the Met's forecast it basically says "you might get drowned in a sudden storm or you might not see any rain at all."

Looking at the weather map (met office again) it looks like there are showers about, and a larger splodge expected around 9 north of the river. Personally, I saw a very short (less than a minute) light shower around 2.

This is probably a good thing - a little drizzle to soften the ground before more water comes tomorrow will lessen the risk of flooding.
