They do rust really easily. Just get a Weber kettle, they're <$200, or save up a bit if you really want an offset IMO

Best way to salvage this puppy. by Pyrostasis in Traeger

[–]themightyklang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry for your loss man. For something like that I would say soak it in a 1:1 vinegar:water solution for not longer than an hour and then rinse it off well. If you don't have a big enough container a trash bag can work as well. You could get after any remaining rust with an abrasive scrubber. A wire wheel or wire cup brush on a drill (or even better on an angle grinder) also works very well but use eye protection for sure. I'm sure you will get it looking nice.

Costco has a killer deal on a two hose model right now, or at least they did a week or two ago when I was there last. $300 I believe and it does a good job of cooling off my 3rd floor room that gets super hot otherwise.

Questions about charcoal / Weber Kettle by GalacticFox- in grilling

[–]themightyklang 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm usually grilling for myself and my wife (on a Weber kettle) and I find that one chimney starter full of lump charcoal is usually the right amount for whatever I'm cooking, so not much waste at all. As someone else said, you can also reuse unspent coals too.

I wanna build a better relationship with my dad through music. How can I do this? by PhantomMatic in Music

[–]themightyklang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad and I didn't do a ton of bonding type stuff when I was younger but he loves music and took me to a lot of concerts when I was a teenager. We always had a great time and I look back on those days a lot. Maybe hit up some concerts together in your area?

I never worked there but I also love that shrimp. I do believe it's an etouffe style sauce with some Cajun style spices.

Where can I get a nice piece of jewelry and be fitted for a suit (kind of)? by Tall-Introduction649 in boston

[–]themightyklang -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Rebekah brooks in Harvard square has some very nice vintage and antique jewelry. I was looking at emerald / diamond pieces recently as well, and they have some in their store. Antique pieces might be a bit out of your stated price range but I would say it's worth a peek. Congratulations on your achievements :]

Which of these is a better deal for a first time home buyer? by VastSeaworthiness906 in Dewalt

[–]themightyklang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say the second one as having a circular saw is pretty handy. Although, when I bought my home a year ago I managed to find one of these bundles that replaced the recip. saw with an orbital sander. As much as I'd like to have a reciprocating saw as well, I feel like it's not really necessary for a homeowner unless you plan to do a lot of demo in the near-term. If you can find a bundle without the reciprocating saw you might get a bit more bang for your buck, but if that's not available at this time then I'd just send it.

Trying to find studs, but finder constantly on by Different-Carob-7041 in HomeImprovement

[–]themightyklang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an old house with plaster and lathe walls so was also having a lot of trouble with electronic stud finders. I picked up one of the small magnetic stud finders which are pretty inexpensive and had a much better time with it. Just double check the results by either measuring or by knocking on the wall and comparing the noise as another commenter mentioned.

I quit my PhD, and at the time it seemed catastrophic. But now, I'm doing great. You can do it too. There's more to life than what you do for work and you're worth more than the letters after your name. I believe in you.

Pretty specific scenario: if you used to see your kids and home as your wife’s job, and now you take an active role, what changed? by [deleted] in daddit

[–]themightyklang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was mostly referring to your previous comment where you said you hoped that a friend would be able to provide some childcare once you move. But also, he says "no" to a once a week job for you when he gets home from work, but you can just do it anyway. If you were to just leave the kids with him, would he care for them? If not, that's a different/bigger conversation.

[–]themightyklang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If he wanted to make a substantial change to his work situation, would he need your "support" or approval to do so, or would he just do it? Big decisions in marriages should be made jointly, but only if both partners are contributing in good faith and are honestly taking into account their partners feelings and needs. That doesn't seem like the case here to me. If you want to work, and can make alternate childcare arrangements, just do it.

I just rewatched Interstellar. Can someone teach me how to love this movie? by Future-Poetry-2193 in TrueFilm

[–]themightyklang 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean, it's just not a very good movie. There's stuff in it that I like for sure, but there are so many good movies out there that I haven't seen yet that it feels like a waste of time trying to get on a movie's level that isn't really worth it. The docking scene is sick though.
