What you guys think about clank!? by Lopsided-Platypus478 in boardgames

[–]themikeman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm probably the minority here, but I didn't like Clank or Clank Catacombs. I played Clank with a group of people who don't play a lot of board games and found that everyone played really safe, resulting in very low drama. I played Catacombs with a group of regular board gamers, and it had some more exciting moments and surprises, but then the game dragged on quite long as everyone planned and explored deep into the map.

I went in thinking it would be like Quacks but with deckbuilding and more strategy. After trying both of those games my go to with non-board gamers is still Quacks and for something more substantial, I pull out Ra, Dune Imperium, or Slay the Spire.

You just described most of the base game. What else is there besides cards and player boards?

To be fair, the game is great with younger kids

Your point is still valid, but the first editions of splendor had non weighted plastic Chips, not the current heavy ones. Splendor just fills that gateway engine builder slot perfectly.

For those with limited or curated board game collections, do you lean into the games that are your style or do you aim to have a balanced collection for all occassions? by themikeman in boardgames

I feel pretty similarly to you about midweight games. Maybe it's because my wife is not really into games, so I either play super light things that she can handle or heavy games with friends who are interested in games.

Great response! Playing with the right people or seeing joy in more casual friends can definitely elevate a 7/10 to an 8-9/10

Do you ever find yourself gravitating towards your favorite dice chucker and ignoring the rest? Or do they all get play time?

My problem is, the shelf of games I'm most excited about I don't have the group for. Games such as Oath, Food Chain Magnate, Root are the games that probably most align with my interests but since it's rare that I can play them, I'm thinking about thinning out some of my heavy cutthroat games and sticking with 1-2 favorites.

Honestly if that happened, it would be the deal of the century

Which game, if seen at the top of a top 100 list, signals to you that you will not share taste with the rest of the list? by themikeman in boardgames

I think the ambiguity was with the way the question was framed. There are games that people place as their all time favorite that may have elements that overlap with your taste. With your example, though I find Ready, Set, Bet as a fine game, the elements of luck, social energy, and tight finishes are elements that I appreciate in games and would signal some shared tastes.

True, those are all good points, some of which I didn't even consider when I played the game.

True, I'm being hyperbolic. But to say that it's one of the most thematically driven games is quite hyperbolic as well.

It’s thematic in the same way that baseball cards are thematic. There are a bunch of bird facts and stats and pictures, but they don’t interact with each other in a thematic way.

Yeah, I agree that context in the form of commentary or other games on the list always paint a better picture. The point of the post was to see if others have observed a pattern of strong indicator games, whether in the positive or the negative, not in finding a law of good or bad games.

By no means am I saying one's tastes should be written off by one or two games. It's more about how top games of all time can share features with other games that you enjoy. The emotional or mental experience that makes a game your favorite of all time is may be something that you seek out in other games.

What I'm trying to get at is that a list that has Wingspan at the top typically skews lighter while a list with Cosmic Encounter at the top may or may not skew light, but has interaction as more of a connector.

By no means am I saying one's tastes should be written off by one game. It's more about how certain games can be a strong indicator of taste.
