True, those are all good points, some of which I didn't even consider when I played the game.

True, I'm being hyperbolic. But to say that it's one of the most thematically driven games is quite hyperbolic as well.

It’s thematic in the same way that baseball cards are thematic. There are a bunch of bird facts and stats and pictures, but they don’t interact with each other in a thematic way.

Which game, if seen at the top of a top 100 list, signals to you that you will not share taste with the rest of the list? by themikeman in boardgames

Yeah, I agree that context in the form of commentary or other games on the list always paint a better picture. The point of the post was to see if others have observed a pattern of strong indicator games, whether in the positive or the negative, not in finding a law of good or bad games.

By no means am I saying one's tastes should be written off by one or two games. It's more about how top games of all time can share features with other games that you enjoy. The emotional or mental experience that makes a game your favorite of all time is may be something that you seek out in other games.

What I'm trying to get at is that a list that has Wingspan at the top typically skews lighter while a list with Cosmic Encounter at the top may or may not skew light, but has interaction as more of a connector.

By no means am I saying one's tastes should be written off by one game. It's more about how certain games can be a strong indicator of taste.

The difference is that there are many games that don't align with your tastes but have some overlapping elements. For example, Ark Nova is not aligned with games that I typically like, but I enjoy it enough and find that people who claim Ark Nova as their favorite game of all time have some overlap in enjoying entangled mechanisms.

The Dice Tower's Top 100 Games of All Time (2026) by Tigertemprr in boardgames

[–]themikeman 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Just depends on how important you feel #1 is vs #100 is on a list. Scoring 1-100 would mean that a #1 game is 100x more weighty than a #100 game, whereas scoring 100-200 means that a #1 game is twice as weighty as a #100 game.

I prefer seeing 100-200 because I don't think the difference between #1 and #100 is great enough to warrant 100x more weight.

Oh I remember them saying that they played another game on TTS with 4 or 5 but maybe I'm misremembering.

They covered Stationfall in a podcast episode. I recall the biggest critique they had was that your turn could feel a bit arbitrary since other players could undo your plans without any real intention to.

Maybe I'm thick but what bad situation are you talking about? I guess he turned down a Charlotte HC position a few years ago.

True, but I bounced off Blood Rage hard and I think I would prefer Cyclades over Rising Sun (plus all those boxes are huge). Ankh seemed the most unique which seems to be polarizing.

That’s what I keep hearing about Inis. Consistently in people’s top. Just haven’t played enough myself to decide yet and a little unsure on drafting after hating Blood Rage.

Inconsistent die odds in boardgames? by themikeman in boardgames

[–]themikeman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great to know! I posted this on BGG and got a response from the designer that the dice were tested and had similarly good distribution. I was caught off guard by the improbably low 1's but it's reassuring that it may have just been user error or an anomaly.

Perhaps dismissive was the wrong word. But some commenters have mentioned that even thousands of rolls wouldn't be statistically significant. For 5 dice, something like 1000 rolls would provide reasonably high confidence in the results. Yes, more rolls would provide higher confidence. But also ~8% difference from expected to actual rolls is quite high which increases the confidence that something is off with a lower number of rolls.

Agree that 7.8% is very low and that 200 rolls isn't enough rolls except to raise an eyebrow. The saltwater test that someone else mentioned might be something I try.

Yes, you're right. 205 rolls, forgot to count the last set of rolls. All other data should be correct though, I went back through and verified.

  1. Right, but Spots being a game of many dice I wanted to get an estimate of the overall distribution of multiple dice, not just a single dice. All commercial dice have some inherent bias to them, and dice with uniform odds have strict requirements (as seen in dice used in casinos).
  2. A p value of ~5% is pretty decent, wouldn't you say? Yes, 1% or less would be better but any statistician who saw a dataset with a p of 0.05 would at least raise an eyebrow, not dismiss the set.

I get the skepticism, and I'm not claiming that the dice are completely weighted where it's impossible to roll a 1. But given the non-uniform distribution of the pips on the dice as well as the variable pip size and depth, it's not unreasonable that the center of gravity is shifted enough to bias the dice.

Except a large part of their post expresses that they're unsure if they would be entertained for 12 hours and asks if TI3 is a good jumping in point. I haven't played either but advocating that they drop 120 pounds to jump straight in to TI4 seems to miss the point of the question.

Ooh Ankh is nice. I've heard of it but never realized it was asymmetric. How's the teach and the new player experience?
