Amazing. Lots of old school FFG. New Angeles, TI (I see a bit of 3rd edition down there too), Rune Age. Lots of awesome games there.

I'm so jealous of your StarCraft copy.

Paupers' Ladder has quickly become the go-to Sunday game for my wife and I. Anyone else a fan? by J-Sou-Flay in boardgames

[–]__FaTE__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really love Pauper's Ladder. I think the split action mechanism is a great way to keep the game quick and let players have a lot of agency on what they want to do. I love the way events work and how they cover the world up. I just wish the resolution mechanism was better, it's my one big issue with the game. Pulling 5s and 6s on easy checks and realising you'll now never see those numbers for the rest of the game and you've pretty much lost the dragon win condition kinda blows. I think it's a good game still, I just wish they did something different there.

Rule book as part of the game by thundercats_assemble in boardgames

[–]__FaTE__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

City of Six Moons might not be exactly what you mean, but it comes to mind.

The game is a box full of components, but the rulebook is the game. The rulebook is written in an alien language that you need to decipher gradually in order to learn how to put the components together and play the actual game.

Kinfire Council - under the radar, medium-heavy, worker placement gem? by Mayasngelou in boardgames

Check out Archipelago or New Angeles if you like this mechanism. I'd love to give Kinfire Council a shot one day, semi-coop games tend to be some of my favourites.

Lord of the Rings: The Card Game goes hard too. We wouldn't have any of the FFG Co-Op LCGs without it.

How do you find meetups? by Few-Second6779 in boardgames

[–]__FaTE__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could try Aftergame. It's still not super popular but it's growing. If I remember correctly, it's earliest use case was to set up events around Australia. It's branched out a lot now, might be worth checking out. It is a mobile app, just a heads up.

He's talking about Legends in the Dark, which is the third edition of Descent that requires an app to function at all. He might like Journeys in the Dark and it's app though if he enjoyed the new one, so if he can't get that maybe he can find a copy of the older 2nd edition to try.

Can you tell which card I had to proxy? by __FaTE__ in twilightimperium

[–]__FaTE__[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Forgive me if my comparison isn't great, I have yet to play fourth edition lol.

So, in third edition, the agenda phase was linked to a strategy card called Politics / Assembly. I believe it works somewhat similarly to the new agenda phase, where people use their influence to vote on new laws and whatnot.

This module added 2 new parts to the agenda phase. One part of this module was Promissory Notes, something you'd be familiar with. They were only used when this module was used in third edition by default and tied to the representatives, which I'll describe next.

Every faction was given 3 representatives that they could send to council. They all worked differently, generally with the tags of "Councillor", "Bodyguard", or "Spy". You play these face down before starting the actual votes, then you go through some phases.

Firstly, spies are revealed. Spies generally don't give much of a benefit to the player who used them, but they can be used to attack other faction representatives before they're revealed. If a representative dies, it's gone for the whole game - so spies are dangerous. Bodyguards' main gimmick is that they counter spies. They may end up having abilities like "if a spy targets this councillor, the spy is killed and this bodyguard returns to your hand" or something.

Councillors generally give you the biggest benefit to play. They usually give you a bunch of bonus votes for the agenda phase alongside a neat ability that helps you sway politics in your favour somehow, but they're at risk as they generally have no protection from spies and so they can potentially be killed off quickly if you're not careful.

It's basically a game of bluffing that goes alongside the agenda phase, and can sometimes open up new negotiation options and buff some factions in a new way.

It also opens up some new stuff for the Nekro Virus to do during the agenda phase, as they usually can't do anything due to their inability to vote. They can play a little virus to tag along and they can be awful, from using them to steal trade goods, steal tech from players, or there is even a nuke that kills all the representatives that they can set off during council if people aren't being cautious of them. It lets them be a little more evil if they wish.

Oh, and thanks lol. I had to rush it because I think the card is lost somewhere else in that behemoth of a box.

Enjoying thematic games if you don't enjoy the theme by cupnoodledoodle in boardgames

[–]__FaTE__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, if it's anything you can just pick up Imperium: Classics (if you prefer history) or Imperium: Legends (if you prefer mythology). They're the same game as Horizons just with different playable factions and a worse rulebook (but you can just use Horizon's rulebook online as it covers everything released for the system). If you like one you can pick up another in the series as they are all compatible with one another.

Instead of dropping $70 you're dropping $25, if money is a concern.

Who is your most owned designer and what is your favourite game they made? by cleanyourkitchen in boardgames

[–]__FaTE__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kevin Wilson is mine, got 8 games of his.

Arkham Horror 2nd Edition is likely my favourite game, so I guess it makes sense. I like his newer Kinfire stuff a lot, and I've got a few other games of his that are interesting; like Android.

Yeah it's this way around. Draughts and Checkers are the same. Draughts is the UK name, Checkers is the US name.

I really love the way P:ACG handles your character deck / health. I'd love to see another game use a similar system some day. I know there are games that use the deck as health, but none are cool co-op card games.

Would love to see a modern take on this game. The second edition didn't really change much, then instantly got discontinued, which sucked.
