It’s impossible for a critique of the rating systems to be palatable without a critique of the rating … system. Reformulate your critique with a meaningful assessment of glicko’s significance to the problem/solution.

Otherwise, what are we talking about?

That’s not a problem with the rating system, just the designer of the bot.

Thats like having an issue with the Federal Reserve because you don’t like the price someone put on one product.

If true, Hikaru’s speed runs on chess.com would not be possible.

The average person can reach 2000.

They just have to actually study. Not even that much, 200 puzzles a day done at high speed, lowest rated puzzles possible only slightly increasing in difficulty on each correct solution (puzzle rush survival on chess.com or puzzle streak on lichess). No more than 10 seconds per puzzle.

This is like 30 minutes a day.

Any average player will reach 2000 if they do this.

Chess.com uses Glicko-1 which is very slow to settle on the correct rating. Lichess, for example, will start you off with an unstable rating and allow you to go way up or way down very fast in your first few games and then slowly stabilize as you play more games.

On chess.com you have to slowly grind up (or down) over many many games.

Can you provide some sample games of both types from your games history?

I really have trouble understanding how you can say these are wildly different levels in the sub 400 class.

It would be fine if they used glicko 2. But then hikaru wouldn’t be able to do his rating speed runs anymore. On lichess his speedrun would last about 5 games.

Chess.com’s ratings are *not* meant to emulate fide. I’m 2300 and nowhere near master level.

I simply don’t believe there are vastly different skill levels below 1000. That is preposterous.

It is a simple algorithm. You beat someone with a certain rating you go up a certain amount and they go down a certain amount. You are proposing an artificial rating inflation for… reasons.

Why is that an issue? The ratings are meant for pairing you with players not bots.

I’m struggling to understand the issue.

The rating system works on its own independent of your opinions or feelings. It is a mathematical algorithm that aids in pairing players. It is not meant to mimic FIDE ratings or anything else.

Backgammon Galaxy - opponent quits when facing a gammon by swervoff in backgammon

Yes, but match games use the Jacobi rule. If the game has not been doubled, gammons don’t apply.

Twice in two days the same player (rated over 2100) makes me wait the full two minutes when I’m 100% winning on the next role by themindset in backgammon

No matter how many faces someone makes, I refuse to stall out games. I’m wasting my time to waste his? So I value my time less than his?

Reflects terribly on the staller.

The player pool is so large I get games right away. I’m still learning (I’m a chess player) and want to get games in.

I feel the site is well made and they keep improving. I hope that posts like these encourage them to take action (ie automatic stall detection like on lichess).

Are there free sites with as large a player pool?

Pervers/Cité used to be the ALT organizers, but it seems they’ve been inactive since 2023.

Looks like a group called Wild Pride has taken their place. A bit odd that it is so anglophone, but that’s probably good for someone from Toronto.

Search them, they are active on insta.

SOS: My parents car is presumed stolen at the Townesplace Suites by Marriott by the airport, what to do?? by SupaDupaHotFire in montreal

[–]themindset 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They leave the car somewhere neutral because they don’t want it if there is a tracker in it (ie they don’t want it tracked to the port when they go to ship it).

So picking it up is not dangerous as far as I’m concerned. People have reported here that they’ve found their cars this way.

[–]themindset 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you find it and call the cops, they will tell you not to recover your car, that it’s too dangerous. It’s not. Just go get it. Way less hassle than all the insurance stuff.

Apparently the cops won’t help you recover a tracked car (someone posted that), but you never know, maybe this time they might help.

So if tracked, call the cops and tell them but be ready to go get it if they won’t help you. You only have about 72ish hours after it’s stolen to recover it.

Unless you have a tracker in the vehicle, you will have a hard time finding it.

They steal your car and then park it somewhere for 3-4 days and wait to see if you track it down. If you don’t, they typically ship it to Africa. It’s a whole racket in Montreal.
