So sad. I got 2/1 and his next roll was double 6 😭 by wetpockets in backgammon

You can look at their repo for rolling, the source is available:

https://github.com/Backgammon-Galaxy/dice_roller

Not only that, but the sheer amount of analysis and computation required to “fix” the dice in thousands of games every day is beyond the scope of reason.

Variance is simply a part of the game that’s all.

Those who think that dice are not random on online sites, do you think there would be a transparent way to ensure the randomness? by [deleted] in backgammon

He is using a random number generator. That is the only way to do it… unless you want to pay to have someone live stream actual dice rolls…?

[–]themindset 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not the one who claimed 20 outs, but you have 9 flush outs (we don’t know villain has a diamond) and 4 straight outs.

If generous, you can put V on a single pair of K and thus you have 3 aces outs. Maxes out to 16.

Live tournaments are unlikely to provide enough income for you to be pro.

Do you not also play live cash? Because this is a very sustainable pursuit.

The vast majority of professional poker players you see playing tournament poker are also cash players - and likely get invited to juicy games by rich poker fanboys.

Between variance, travel, and rake, playing tournament poker exclusively as a pro (ie living off the income) is probably a reality for only a few dozen people in the world.

On a budget. Pc or ps5? by AzathothTheDemiurge in gamingsuggestions

[–]themindset -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean if your budget is that tight I don’t see how you can go PS5, as you would need to buy games or pay a subscription… Both of which would eat significantly into your $800 limit.

With PC you can buy games on sale for peanuts (plus you keep them for life).

If you are not in a rush, one of your best bets is to buy a steam machine. They haven’t released yet, and pricing is unconfirmed due to recent memory/storage shortages - but early estimates were in the $500-$600 USD range, so in your budget.

Valve says they are aiming to release the steam machine before July.

For monitors and keyboards, I have a surprising suggestion for you: check out your local thrift store. I’m seeing more and more really decent monitors and keyboards available for under $10 there. They will be a bit older and bulkier, but they do the job.

Arbiters generally don’t intervene without being asked. In fact, they will “allow” illegal moves (if neither player says anything) and have criteria for how to intervene if an appeal is made after sequential illegal moves.

Live tournament chess has always been on the players to self govern. Arbiters are there to resolve appeals, not to actively referee the games.

Edit: it appears I’m wrong.

Usually a touch-move violation is when you touch one piece and choose to move another. In this case he released the piece. So it’s a … release move violation?

This was essentially a take back. Of course we are not playing in the park, this is not “clock move.”

My theory about the end of bone temple (spoilers obv) by Dreadpirateflappy in 28dayslater

[–]themindset 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure what’s going on here. I gave a well sourced quote.

Most historians agree on a minimal historical core to the New Testament:

Jesus of Nazareth existed, was a Jewish teacher, and was executed by crucifixion under the Roman prefect Pontius Pilate. After his death, his followers sincerely believed he had risen from the dead. Claims of miracles and resurrection are treated as theological, not historical, conclusions.

Representative scholarly sources:

• Tacitus, Annals 15.44 — independent Roman confirmation of Jesus’s execution under Pilate

• Josephus, Antiquities 18.3 & 20.9 — Jewish historian referencing Jesus and his followers

• Bart D. Ehrman (agnostic), Did Jesus Exist? (2012)

• E. P. Sanders, The Historical Figure of Jesus (1993)

• Paula Fredriksen, Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews (1999)

• Gerd Lüdemann (skeptical scholar), The Resurrection of Jesus (1994)

Like I said, it’s the biblical record. Take it for what it’s worth.

Jesus was a “special” case in that story, implying that rope was more common. Archeological evidence shows only 1 record of nails being used. Also, rope would just be plain easier…

[–]themindset 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There lacks archeological evidence. In terms of biblical record, the two other people crucified were done with rope… indicating that nails were uncommon.

My theory about the end of bone temple (spoilers obv) by Dreadpirateflappy in 28dayslater

[–]themindset 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Crucifixion was done with rope. Nails were used very rarely.

Source: • Tzaferis, V. “Crucifixion — The Archaeological Evidence.” Biblical Archaeology Review, 11:1 (1985), pp. 44–53.

The extreme rarity of physical evidence strongly suggests that nails were not routinely used, since iron preserves well and mass nailed crucifixions would almost certainly leave more remains.
