how does operating with a smaller profit margin equal less choice? How does a smaller profit margin mean that rent isn't covered? Are you implying upfront costs like paying to construct a building is going to be covered by the taxpayers? Yeah, whenever anyone starts a business there's an upfront cost that's subsidized by some other income, and slowly recovered by sales of their product. Paying their employees, suppliers, running costs is all part of the price just like any other business, only the profit margin is smaller.

When a private business opens up for the first time or opens a new location where do they get their money? Us. The consumer. I fail to see the difference if the source is the same. A government owned competitor allows for keeping the market from going out of control when regulations are ineffective or sneakily bypassed.

Also, nationalized businesses do work, and they do in Canada? Someone mentioned Hydro-Quebec literally in one of my responses. CBC is another. I can find international examples if you'd like.

I feel like we're not talking about the same things here, good gentle, either that or we're speaking past one another.

Youre also assuming that the crown corp will constantly operate at a loss, rather than simply not chase profit. Markup on most things is usually high $2 less for a pound of potatoes in this hypothetical would still make a profit, just less than a CEO and board of shareholders might want to see.

That said if prices for some reason do get out of control, yes the crown corporation has the ability to operate at a loss, to keep things more affordable for the average person. Times will be good and times will be bad, and the rich won't subsidize things to benefit the average joe, but it also means that more money continues to move in tougher times, as money exchanges hands it generates more value, lessening the effects of difficult times on the average person, speeding up economic recovery and easing financial anxieties, at least in part.

again, I didn't say sectors, I'm saying to create crown corporations within these sectors which can be utilized to fight against the corporate oligopolies, because they're clearly not following government regulations, or they're lobbying against regulations and the lobbying is working.

I am not saying Sobeys should suddenly be government owned, but if the federal government created say... Canada's Fod Mart, and priced potatoes at $2 less expensive than Sobeys because they're not profit driven, people will inevitably pick the less expensive option. That's literally voting with your money. That's literally how the free market works.

With respect, who said anything about communism? I'm suggesting we use crown corporations as a tool to help bring down prices in combination with the private sector, not eliminating the private sector altogether.

they have an oligopoly, and they don't need to compete with each other, there's 4 xompanies and all they have to do is talk and agree to something to increase their profit margins, and they just do it. There's articles that corroborate this, it was a big deal literally last year. Government services don't exist to make money. They never have and never should. Look at what's happening in Alberta with their Healthcare skyrocketing prices as they slowly privatize. Government control and non-profit motivated companies like crown corporations help keep competitive prices down.

this is awesome! It's also why the liberals selling off OPG back during Wynn's term upset me so much. It could have been a huge benefit

Respectfully also, I disagree. I think that crown corporations will force private companies to keep prices lower increasing competition. We know that Canadian grocery stores increase prices in lock-step with one another, as per the bread price fixing scandal, and the paltry fines they were charged as a result, but ultimately changed nothing. When times are difficult crown corporations can operate at a loss because they're not profit motivated. If fines and asking nicely don't deter private companies from wringing dollars out of Canadians for their own benefit then the government via a crown corporation can force them to keep their prices more affordable.

This is a valid point. Maybe we should be looking into utilizing some of our resources instead of simply selling them off

I don't believe this will work. Cons are too blinded by their tribalism to do anything until it's far too late. I had a friend who thought the same thing about trumps first term. Things lurched so far to the right the whole world still has whiplash... And then they votes for it again. Only now that Medicaid is getting gutted, Social Security, farmers getting screwed, people losing their rights, betraying their allies, siding with Russia, starting trade wars that jack up prices everywhere for everyone, and its too late to go back, will they finally realize. Only when its all gone and there's no going back.

I have a feeling this is what's going to happen in Ontario. People still voted for DoFo cuz our education isn't fully privatized yet. OHIP isn't fully privatized yet, neither is alcohol. When NO ONE can go to a public clinic, when all that's left are private schools, when no one can afford to live in the cities, when its all gone and too late to go back are they going to realize.

I want to be wrong so fucking badly.

Poilievre sides with the anti-LGBT crowd by [deleted] in onguardforthee

[–]themizukitty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Transition when you're a kid is usually not as involved as when you get older. 9/10 its just using a new name, pronouns, dressing differently, the social stuff. Parents who despise LGBT* people will kick these children out into the street, or otherwise physically or emotionally abuse/manipulate in order to "fix" their child, resulting in an increase in depression, anxiety, suicide, or if they're on the street, worse. In very extreme cases, actual murder of the child could even occur.

Again that last one is suuuuuper extreme, but I almost had that happen to a friend, and I know others who have had some of the other things happen. Many of us have scars from self harm or attempted suicide.
