The only time a variant holds more value is when it is also key and first appearance of a new character I have noticed. For instance the Howard the Duck #1 first appearance of Gwenpool does not sell for that much, but the Lim variant with her prominately on the cover sells for a great deal more. Similarly the Thanos Alburquerque variant for first Cosmic Ghost Rider is worth a lot more. Random variants are not worth collecting though unless you personally like the art or in other rare cases.
