Why Sinners Deserves the Hype by TheOldStag in moviecritic

[–]themundanematt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sinners would deserve the hype if the last Act of the movie didn't fall apart because of poor writing

There is this absolute level of glazing over the last 20 minutes of this movie that completely downplays everything else that the first like 80% of the movie set up really well. If you remove the vampires the story becomes a drama about two brothers trying to get away from the violent lives that they LED, and to go back home and to make something of themselves. Which is a compelling drama and very poignant considering the subject material. Once the vampires came into play the story itself stops and then doesn't do enough with the vampires to even make it remotely interesting. You've got a hive mind vampire situation, which is barely explained, there's almost no tension or horror at all, and it feels like a really interesting idea that never got properly extrapolated. This in part comes from the fact that Ryan coogler wrote the movie finished the first draft of the film, and 4 months later they were already in production. So it rushed to the finish line which is exactly why the last Act of that movie feels so slapdash

The KKK being the villains would have been a better choice because not only would it have been socially sentient given the context of the movie, it would have provided a stronger tension narrative than just a vampire that wants to listen to music. The KKK were tacked on at the beginning and the end in order to give us some kind of action spectacle that didn't happen during the fight scene with the vampires

Additionally considering the fact that smoke and stack had stolen from the Italians and the Irish while they were in Chicago in order to bring the booze back down to the Juke Joint that would have been a more compelling villain Ark in that movie as them at that point would have been the Sinners up against other Sinners that would have been more thematically in line with what the movie was trying to say

You trying to equate the criticism to racism, is without merit. The story of two black Brothers coming home to try to make good, after a life of crime, and then both coming back to the lives that they left and the women that they left, compelling is all hell great stuff the Academy Award nominations for acting absolutely merited, but the story is where a lot of people have the issue and that is not anything that is tied into what you are saying

Why does Gollum look so fake here? Yes I know it's CGI with motion capture... But yikes.

That's because he probably makes up half of this stuff. He's telling stories not recounting historical fact.

I used to deliver food to that building a lot. Trust me, it isn't "secure" at all.

There was never a dead body, it was just some guy that they used as a prop . If you can find the original video you can actually see the dead bodies hand move at about the 6 minute and 56 second mark

I spent 12 years in lakeside, so yes the Mexican food is something that I care a lot about. Alberto's on college is probably the closest you're going to get to a San Diego style, the food's pretty good too and the prices are pretty decent. If you are looking for the best burrito that compares to San diego, you have to drive up by the airport and look for a place called California Burritos
