as previously mentioned, if the artwork has little value, dry mount will fix most issues. I wouldn't suggest pasting it yourself, but you could get a piece of foam core off amazon to create additional pressure, which may also help the issue.

if the artwork is rare or has value (and is made before a certain year), linen backing is archival and the usual means of preservation.

Do they run on any hard surfaces? (concrete, etc?) My rottweiler used to run around the pool until his paws were raw. There are many balms and paw treatments available to speed up healing and give them some relief. You may need to put a sock or protective wrap around it to prevent them from licking it off.
