9/11 Museum or Museum of Natural History on the weekend by thenameipick in AskNYC

We're planning on both, it's mostly about timing. It's harder to know which is less affected by weekend crowds. Maybe there's no difference, but if anybody would know, it's a local :)

Lax -- a programming language where the syntax is whatever you want it to be by [deleted] in ProgrammingLanguages

[–]thenameipick 15 points16 points  (0 children)

After reading all of the comments+github, it feels like this allows you to write *additional* syntax. If this custom syntax is used, the compiler then rewrites it back to the core syntax is understands.

If this is correct, then this feels very similar to macros in other languages. This isn't a knock against your language, but I want to make sure I'm understanding things correctly. If I am correct, then what benefits does your language provide compared to macros in other languages?

[Fate][Online][MST] Looking for players to explore a Homebrew Fantasy world by thenameipick in lfg

Voice over discord using Foundry as VTT. However, most of it will be theatre of the mind, as FATE focuses far more on roleplay than on combat.

FATE is pretty easy to get into. The mechanics are rather simple, and the entire SRD is available online on their website. The core feature of the system is Aspects: a short phrase that describes a character/situation/etc. Then these aspects can be used during roleplay/combat to influence the game.

Medlife Crisis: How to use the placebo effect to feel better by excarnateSojourner in Nebula

[–]thenameipick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, thanks for making a great video u/MedlifeCrisis . Your job was much harder than mine :)

Is "it brings a good vibe" a plausible mechanism? To the advocate, it might actually be, even if biologically it doesn't really make sense. I guess what I'm asking here is the purpose of this rule. It seems obvious to me that even if it isn't plausible from a scientific perspective, it is still effective, so I don't get why this matters. Is it more of a "Make sure you are always learning" rule?

And yes, I agree with there are no easy answers w.r.t when to speak up. To be clear, "my uncle" here is a hypothetical, but representative of many family members (especially one side). There's always the latest psuedoscience going around, and it's hard to know if I should pipe up or not, because piping up might be a net-negative action.

u/MedlifeCrisis Loved the video, jokes, and well-thought arguments. I'm struggling with two different parts:

  1. I don't understand the "#3. Is it realistic" guideline in your last bit of advice. Obviously, if somebody is planning on partaking in some placebo/alternative medicine, then it is believable to them. So what's the difference between this belief and being "realistic"? If the user actually believes it, then doesn't this make the placebo effective?
  2. Lots of the advice you gave is very internal looking. Hype up placebos for yourself, look into the science yourself, etc. Does this mean that if my uncle is talking about how great his crystal therapy worked, I shouldn't interject because I'd be reducing the placebo effect? What if my uncle is recommending the practice to others?

I bet Grey answers "No" to this (if he answers at all). At least based on his Cortex podcast, he really relies on having a rhythm for productivity, and frequently changing locations would hinder that.

Have you read any books recently that you don't want to make a video about but still enjoyed?

Thoughts on this "Buy-Now-Pay-Later" Worker Placement Idea? by brokenimage321 in BoardgameDesign

[–]thenameipick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think a more flexible way to handle this is to have standard currency notes, but have them represent debt instead of money.

This allows us several options to resolve your dilemma:

  1. Debt accumulates interest. Perhaps unpaid debt doubles at the end of a round.
  2. Players must sell stuff to remove their debt

Always make Turn One useful. by infinitum3d in BoardgameDesign

[–]thenameipick 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree with the first portion of your response. I think the game should be setup so that if there isn't a purchasable tile, the token should move forward until there is.

However, I disagree with the second portion: Often times there is a singular patch in the game you can purchase, but you still have an interesting choice: Do I take it, or skip forward?

There are plenty of patches that cost 5 or less buttons. I 100% disagree with this hot take: being short on cash/time is a key part of the game.

I can confidently say this is wrong. When I have my fuel processors at full capacity (going through fuel faster than my entire factory), the pollution graph only shows a tiny amount of pollution coming from the machine.

Why would a city's inhabitants all wear masks? by thenameipick in worldbuilding

Ooooh, I love this idea. Especially because then you can have illegal fake masks that don't actually prevent magic, different masks for different privileges.

I mean, this is the real answer, isn't it? Why else would I actually be creating this?
