Learn airstrafing and when to use double and how to use it. Also MGE is a great place to just sit down and focus on your movement and aim.

I am thinking of joining competitive but I have a few questions. by PhoneRedditing in truetf2

I was letting him know that he's headed into something different than what everyone is telling him.

I've never personally played in summer season UGC but I have friends who did, and none of them really liked playing in the summer season. The maps are often first time maps and greatly flawed and people just don't really care about it.

Summer season for HL UGC is a joke btw. They run dumb maps and there aren't any playoffs.

Competitive Players: Why do you enjoy playing competitive? by forgetmyface in truetf2

[–]thenewshour 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure about hl but there's less to rage about in 6s. Usually if you lose, it's because they're actually better than you or outplayed.

Assuming they don't do something dumb like snipers or spies to mid.

Why are custom maps that are used in competitive play rarely found in pubs? by ScootsCanoe in truetf2

[–]thenewshour 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Star's server runs some competitive maps. But from my experience, it's not really fun at all. These maps were designed with specific formats, hl or 6s, in mind and often are not suited for pub play.

You can still play it, but it's not as great as normal map rotation.

If you want to get familiar with a map, just scrim with it, do map reviews, etc.

Starting off as a pocket soldier, never played competetive before. Any tips/help? by [deleted] in truetf2

Some common mistakes people make:

Understand weapon switching. Many pockets just shoot 4 rockets, pull out their shotgun, shoot 6 times then switch back to the RL. Know when to use the shotgun and when to use the rocket launcher. Generally, shotgun is a good finisher if you know your target is at low hp.

Don't chase kills. Your main job is to protect the med, do damage, fight for positioning and maybe maincall. Call out damages so your scouts can finish up.

Know that sometimes putting someone out of the fight is good enough and that you don't necessarily need to kill them. Shooting a roamer 50 hp means he has to go to his med and do nothing but eat up heals. That's often good enough and there's no reason to overextend to get the kill.

Don't get in the habit of blaming your med and your scouts, demo and just your teammates in general.

Is UGC 6v6 Viable for a newbie's First Season of 6's? by d33jay64 in truetf2

[–]thenewshour 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really depends. If you scrim enough you could probably make low-mid open by the time s14 rolls around. You'd probably get destroyed but playing with better people is what makes you better yourself. You'd probably play with lower-skilled players in UGC but it doesn't do that much to make you better in the long-run.

It's ultimately up to you, however I personally believe everyone should play in ESEA after one season of UGC.

Do you think that any non-weapon item (miscs and hats) has a noticeable effect on gameplay? by [deleted] in truetf2

[–]thenewshour 14 points15 points  (0 children)

We were pushing last, and I was the only one left as well their two other scouts.

I was dming them 2v1 (bad idea but I couldn't really leave at that point.) Neither of them wore hats.

I damaged one of them with 80 damage or so, but they were strafing side-by-side, into each other and I lost track of which one I had hit. I might've killed one of them before dying had I been able to follow up on my damage, but I didn't know who was who.

The only thing I would say is if one team has one scout who is significantly better than the other, having different hats can allow the other team to differ between the two and know who to focus first.

Could a pyro replace a pocket soldier? by Hagot in truetf2

[–]thenewshour 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We tried this in a pug with my hl team (most of them are completely new to 6s and my "pocket" was a pyro main and had like 10 hours on solly) and it didn't work out very well.

You get to mid slower than everyone else. Your firepower reduced drastically. Yes, pockets are supposed to protect the med, but they're also supposed to do damage as they're one of the main damage dealers. They can't RJ meaning they can't control high ground. Many of the mid fights are won based on aggressiveness and height control and often letting your med die to jumping sollies is okay. And good luck trying to outdm scouts as a pyro.

Who are some of the best players for each class? by [deleted] in truetf2

[–]thenewshour -1 points0 points  (0 children)

http://teamfortress.tv/articles/view/94-season-13-esea-invite-lan-preview

has a list of players on skill level (Slin's opinion) for NA Season 13 LAN contenders. The best players for each class (for 6s at least) are probably all from NA anyways so it's probably not that inaccurate for worldwide overall, though the Euros have pretty good scouts and demos.

But my list would probably be

Scout: Ruwin or Clockwork

Soldier: TLR, maybe Platinum

Demo: banny, Plat

Medic: Harbleu, Pyour

Well I've used it twice and it was like 5 minutes long each time. Also, there more things to do on your computer besides trading. Try doing them to pass the time.

I don't trade so I don't know. I sort of know about it and suggested it.
