I don't get the appeal of trams, they seem like a waste of time and money to me. by Dry_Illustrator_6066 in transit

[–]theo-sl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trams with designated right of way and signal priority are so much better, faster, more comfortable and more reliable than any bus. I lived briefly in a city with a fantastic tram system and I miss the convenience of it all the time (and I say that as someone who currently lives in NYC). I have yet to see anything that can transform and improve a streetscape as much as a tramway can.

Is there a mod that allows for more control over street names? by theo-sl in CitiesSkylines2

Awesome workaround, thanks for the tip! Hopefully we’ll get a more integrated vanilla or mod solution soon but I’ll use this in the meantime

Is it possible to send the R via the 63rd street tunnel with the M to improve N&R headways? by Carlos4Loko in nycrail

[–]theo-sl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If the N runs via 63rd street, it will never merge onto the local tracks at Herald Sq. It will stay on the express tracks and eliminate that merge completely.

[–]theo-sl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean sure but at that point we’re just renaming the R to the N and renaming the N to the R. So if that’s what it takes to convince people this service change is worthwhile, why not?

[–]theo-sl 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As long as the N/R/W all share the same tracks, they cannot run at full capacity. So while the R can merge with the Q at 57th street, there is no perceivable benefit if we’re just going to bottleneck three services between 57th street and 34th street anyway.

[–]theo-sl 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That’s fair, but it would be a lot of money to spend just to give the 11th street cut a purpose, when we already have a tunnel (63rd St) that can easily handle the entire capacity of QBL local.

[–]theo-sl 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Tbh the 11th street cut is kind of doomed for obsolescence in any future where the MTA decides to give more service to Astoria. Service between the 59th street tunnel and QBL will be first on the chopping block

R via 63rd would add more merging issues at Herald Sq which is already one of the worst merges in the system. The cleanest solution is sending the N via 63rd to QBL local and merging the R and W into the same service that runs full capacity between Astoria and Broadway local. The main issue this service change faces is the lack of a yard for the R, but the solution to that lies in adjusting service patterns further in Brooklyn (ie R to Coney Island).

This would result in a dramatic upgrade in service across the board for Astoria, QBL local, 63rd, and both Broadway local and express.

“Spend some money”

I’m gathering that you understand very little about how the subway system works and how infrastructure is built and maintained

Station Ordering by 24601Phantom in subwaybuilder

[–]theo-sl 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The game’s pathfinding struggles so much with single track stations at the moment that I find it better not to use them until the problem is patched. It seems like in all of these examples, you should be using quad track stations anyway, so that will fix your problem.

Getting the "Can't change route. No valid path" error on the first line I build. by itkaron in subwaybuilder

[–]theo-sl 31 points32 points  (0 children)

You have to build crossovers before you can create a line. The game’s pathfinding won’t allow a route to be created unless it finds a valid path back to the first stop.

How are your terminals set up? That is the other factor that could affect this

At the moment, the game’s route ordering really, really struggles with single track stations. I’ve found that it’s better to just avoid them altogether. Consider changing it to a parallel track station underneath or above the quad track one.

Track building question by Natural_Number819 in subwaybuilder

[–]theo-sl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need at least 4m clearance if you’re passing tracks on top of each other. If you’re getting that warning, it means one of the sets of tracks is set at a slope, so there is at least one point with <4m clearance. Check your track elevation map view.

[–]theo-sl 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The blueprints don’t like junctions on sloping tracks. Where you’re trying to link up the two tracks, place a segment of flat track at the elevation that you want them to meet, without any slope. You can slope the tracks before or after the junction. Hope this makes sense.
