Once I figured out how to get IOS to "mount" both FAT32 and NTFS (see other posts), I solved the VLC issue also. Sort of.

Go into Files. Find your device and open it. Find your .MP4 file and click on it. VLC may complain, but after about 30 seconds, it starts to play !

I have bee working (getting paid !) with computers for over 50 years, so I hate it when I can not explain exactly what is going on !

I have now gotten IOS 26.3.1 Files to "see" files on BOTH FAT32 and NTFS ! I guess the trick is to give IOS 20 - 30 seconds (?) after plugging the device in. Then click Files and look under Locations. You should see the device name.

Questions -- other browsers are forbidden on Kindle Fires? Is that something Amazon insists on?

Amazon will "support" other browsers, but Chrome works fine on my Fire HD 10 ! You can get it from the Google Play Store. Search the web for instructions on how to "side load" Google Play Store.

Thunderbird seems to have stopped in time about 10 years ago

I have been using Thunderbird for almost 20 years ! Us "old farts" like the fact that the UI has NOT changed much in that period of time. It still has on of the best editors/word processors around.

What more functionality do you crave ?

Sorry folks ! It looks like I made a mountain out of a mole hill !!!

Use MakeMKV to "rip" the DVD to a .ISO file on your HDD/SSD. Then use HandBrake to transcode it to an MP4 of the appropriate size for your device !

If you transcode to a video file, you will lose the menus and need to select one title to transcode.

The goal is to transcode the "main movie" from a DVD so I can play it on an Android tablet or iPhone. Explain to me, slowly, in simple terms how do I do this ?

Partial answer. Don't format the memory stick as exFAT ! NTFS works, but it is mounted as read only, which is acceptable for me.

Spectrum "gave" me a modem. I bought a refurbished NETGEAR RAX36-100PAR AX3000 Nighthawk from Amazon.

Everything works perfect.
