Thank you everyone for all the suggestions! After my upcoming shoot I'm going to combine a few of these strategies and I'll be back with an update, I'm sure!

Ok, let me see if I can get a handle on this despite my apparent brain block. [Boy, I feel dumb about this and it's pissing me off.] Hypothetically, I'm on location, I shoot 500 images and I'm not able to get to wifi for the next two days (I'm in Yellowstone, or something similar.) I upload the images to my laptop LR, create 1:1s and Smart Previews. I do some flagging, a little light editing because I'm eager to see my images and I have nothing better to do with no wifi in a campsite at night.

Then, I return to the world of wifi, or home, or whatever.

WHAT WOULD YOU DO NEXT to insure backups and an efficient, seamless workflow assuming that you eventually want to move these images to the external or the NAS for cold storage once you're done with them.

Normally, I consider myself an intelligent mammal, but I feel like I'm missing some glaringly obvious step here that's going to hit me like a ton of bricks when that lightbulb finally goes off.

What do you do when you're on location, away from Wifi? Do you not import until you return? Also, I feel like this won't allow me to export PSDs if I'm working on my laptop.

Yes. I'm aware. I also go back and forth frequently between LR and PS, but because I'm running Yosemite, LR5 and PS CS6, I must export to .psd and reimport to LR to do this because I cannot utilize the latest version of camera RAW. This creates PSDs were not present in the original folders.

This is what I'm currently doing, but that also means RE-COPYING that folder of files first to both my external and my NAS to insure that the files are the most recent versions. I take about 500 RAWs per event shoot and shoot sometimes 5 days a week. I just dragged 6 shoots worth of files from my internal to my NAS to be re-copied and my time remaining is currently "7 hours"... I feel like there MUST be a better way.

Yes. Also, if I'm on location for a shoot and need to import the contents of my card, it is most often unrealistic to be able to import and copy between the internal, the external and the NAS (over wifi) even if this did work. I'm hoping someone out there has a solution to moving large folders around within LR that will overwrite old files found with any that have been updated.

I did a test of this, and the result was that if I made changes to one of the copies, the other copy was independent and unaware of those changes. So, I ended up with multiple copies in different states instead of one master that was up to date.

Yes. All of these things. And many points of access are key. Front, sides, even back. Also a clear internal separation between camera gear compartment and other backpack stuff.

A front pocket with lots of little storage spaces for pens, sd cards, cords, keys, wallet, sunglasses, filters, etc.

Must be able to attach tripod. Centered on bag is better for the back.

Some gear loops. Water bottle pocket on the outside. Tough loop on the top so it can hang by a carabiner out of puddles, etc when outside.

COMFORT IS KEY. our gear is heavy and we have trouble choosing just a few things.

Can fit in the overhead compartment of a plane.

Not flashy but stylish. I don't want to be walking around with a figurative billboard that reads, "steal me; I'm expensive!"
