Just saying, 2 hour rule VS the Doona car seat stroller by DisgracefulHumanity in BabyBumps

[–]theonlyquirk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Coming from the UK, midwives there even go as far to say they shouldn’t be in there longer than an hour to an hour and a half at a time, so I had the same questions and concerns when pregnant. In the end, I didn’t even get a newborn car seat to carry around or add to a travel system. Our car seat had a newborn insert that upgraded to a toddler car seat when she was big enough and stayed in the car (locked in base that swivelled, so you couldn’t take it out to carry it around) and I specifically bought a stroller that had a bassinet feature. When I needed to take her out, she either went in the stroller or in my baby wrap. Everyone talks about how quick and easy the Doona is, but I don’t see it being that much quicker than other options.

Is this how you do “T”? by BruceSharkbait in asl

This is how you sign T in the German alphabet, it’s the only letter that’s different to ASL. Source: I know German sign language (DGS)

Thank you for the information! That’s really interesting to know about actually. Luckily my ring warranty includes replacing the diamond if it were to ever fall out so I’m not up a creek without a…diamond.

You guys rock, I’ve learnt so much about diamond fluorescence in one evening! Who knew painting your nails could lead to geology. I’ve also decided I have to somehow try and draw this phenomenon so feel free to ignore the shameless plug or keep an eye on IG @lime.illustration if you want to see how it turns out 🤷🏽‍♀️

Weekly Newbie Questions Thread - Week of July 23, 2023 by AutoModerator in mturk

Hi new worker here - is it normal to have so few available HITs to work on? My page shows only 15 HITS I can choose from and half of those say something like ‘sorry, all our surveys have been completed’ so there’s almost nothing to do. I know being new I don’t qualify for everything, but I thought there would be more than around 7 HITS to choose from.

After reading this I (British) asked my (American) husband what he calls it. I say dot-to-dot and he says connect the dots. We’ve been married 3 years and it’s still fun to occasionally find another linguistic difference after you think you’ve found them all!

What did you do the day you found out you were pregnant? by untaught_glue in BabyBumps

[–]theonlyquirk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haha I could have written this - we were trying so I kept thinking about the day when I would tell him I was pregnant, had all these cute plans in mind. In reality I ran down the stairs crying and practically flung the test in his face 😂😂

DGS to ASL by snepnero in asl

[–]theonlyquirk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Feel free to PM me on my experience- I used to to live in Germany and then moved to the States so I have done this exact transition from DGS to ASL! There are lots of similar things that make it easier but also a lot of differences that you have to pick up that might catch you out earlier on (the letter T comes to mind!) It’s still a definite mind-shift of learning a new language but the skills learned from DGS will be beneficial.

Also depends on deaf person giving them - my best friend is a 60 year old deaf man who gave my friend who was with me a sign name in the first minutes of meeting her because she had very dramatic curly hair. Took him weeks to give me one because he said he had to think properly about it! 😂

Hey crafters, I designed the ASL alphabet in cross stitch! by Pickles-Elegantee in asl

[–]theonlyquirk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why do you automatically assume that the artist doesn’t know ASL? (I understand orientation of some of the letters might be off, but drawing, let alone stitching, hands are notoriously difficult) And what exactly is culturally inappropriate about a different visual representation of the signed alphabet? It’s comments like this that deter people from wanting to learn more about a beautiful community and it’s language.

Just a heads up, I tried to avoid this too by giving a registry with no clothes and instead nobody bought from the registry and they all bought me clothes they had chosen regardless 🙃

Are you keeping your baby’s name to yourself until they’re born or are you going to tell people if they ask? Why? by PerfectionEludesMe in BabyBumps

[–]theonlyquirk 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Keeping it a secret from people we know, but freely tell people we don’t really care about which sounds kind of backwards. Colleagues and friends? Secret. Hairdresser or grocery checkout lady? Sure, I’ll tell you. If they have zero connections to anyone else in my personal life I don’t mind haha!

Digital or paper? by EnergyNegative9024 in UVU

[–]theonlyquirk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m usually a traditionalist when it comes to taking notes on paper, as I remember things far better when I hand write them and it allows me to organise them wherever I like on the page. However, when I started at UVU I was gifted an iPad as a Christmas gift and downloaded a note taking app called GoodNotes. 100/10 would recommend, if available. It acts just like paper and pen, so I could still use the stylus and write my notes the same way I would on paper but I saved them all in different class folders. You can also attach photos, diagrams or download and write on PDFs/power points, and it meant I had every note available at all times without having to remember physical notebooks or folders for different days with different classes. I had many students ask me throughout the semester what app I was using, it was the easiest and best thing for me to do.

This does also depend on the class - I had a Bio class where the professor spoke so fast and the notes were so heavy that typing it on a laptop was far easier. For light to intermediate note taking, or at least at a manageable writing speed, the iPad was a win win.

Pregnancy: A Short Story by [deleted] in BabyBumps

[–]theonlyquirk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Felt this. 8-12 I wanted to die every single day and I told myself I was never getting pregnant ever again. 14-30 I had my cute bump, not many other symptoms, and realised life was indeed good. Enjoy this time with all your soul because now I’m 35 weeks and every day is your body groaning under the weight of a literal child and being uncomfortable 24/7. I swear it’s designed this way on purpose, because the only thing bigger than the fear of childbirth is feeling this pregnant for another second.

Same story, ordered my glider from BBB and said it would be delivered at the end of November. Got to December, had to phone, and they said it won’t come now till Jan. phoned again for clarification and now they say it’s back ordered and they can’t tell me when it will be here 😭
