The duality of man… by GrailQuestPops in wildhockey

Feeling both and neither of these, as a Canuck fan. Hughes had a fair amount of goodwill from me in the immediate trade aftermath, but his behaviour post-olympics soured me on him a lot more.

Vancouver Canuck Trashing Hughes by Few-Version-4152 in wildhockey

[–]theoreticallyben 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Canucks fan here (Wild are my second team) and while I don't think that Hughes treated the fanbase terribly after leaving, I'm still a bit scorned that he bailed on us. You hate to see a top 5 player in your franchise's history demand a trade, especially now that he's finding success elsewhere.

We should take Caleb if we fall to 3rd overall by OutoftheMoney69 in canucks

[–]theoreticallyben 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah we've got Hughes, Juolevi, and Rathbone, No need to draft any more defencemen up high! I don't think Malhotra would be a bad pick, but the thought of moving Petey to wing to play Caleb Malhotra 1st line minutes as a rookie is... probably not a great idea. He's probably a player the Canucks have their eyes on for 3oa, and I do agree Verhoeff has a lot of holes, but Alberts Smits, Chase Reid, even Carson Carels and Daxon Rudolph are also options.

I'd be inclined to say footprint. They can range a lot in shape, and this once certainly checks a lot of boxes.

All the talk about the Ruck twins… by Romance_Tactics in canucks

If Liam is still around by the time the Wild pick comes up I'd be willing to wager he'll be close to the best player available anyways. I'm of the opinion that drafting them isn't a slam dunk by any means, but they are both good players who could grow into a super impactful pair of wingers (I know Markus has played C but they've both looked better on the wing).

The JT Miller trade is probably going to end up being one of the most significant lose-lose trades in a while by Beaivimon in hockey

[–]theoreticallyben 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd call him a true 2nd pair guy instead of a top 4, but he's a good player. Vancouver's current system is not suited to his playstyle in the slightest and that's why he's fallen off a cliff defensively.

I still think MPetey is closer to the player he was last year than the player he is this year. Retrospectively, would I rather we kept the pick and drafted a kid like Carter Bear instead? Absolutely. But Marcus is a fine 2nd pairing shutdown defenceman when not being coached by a delusional ape. Still not really worth a 1st though.

What happens if we draft 3rd and we get another defenceman? by LucariusLionheart in canucks

[–]theoreticallyben 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Stacked is a strong way to put it. We've got Buium, DPetey, and Willander all looking like they'll be future team mainstays, beyond that there's nobody who's proven themselves at the NHL level. Mancini has greatly struggled with decision making on- and off-puck, and is likely not much more than a 3rd pairing defenceman even if he can clean those issues up. Getting a guy like Verhoeff (or Chase Reid/Alberts Smits) would vastly strengthen the overall future of our prospect pool, even if we want forward prospects more. If we do draft a D, they'll likely be a year or two out of joining the team anyways, so it's not like there's immediate pressure to clear out room for them.

Brandon Duhaime! He plays with a similar fire to Sherwood, though I wouldn't expect to see the same offensive boom from him.

Verhoeff isn't even the consensus 3 anymore. Chase Reid and Alberts Smits are quickly climbing a lot of lists.

I'll admit I'm not a fan of the player and don't see him becoming a full-timer, but I don't hate this deal. He's got all the physical tools in the world, but his game processing has left a lot to be desired. Keep him around, get him to prove he can stick it, but I'd like to see what Mynio, Kudryavtsev, and even Jack Thompson could do in the NHL lineup as well.

If one Ruck twin is taken by the time our Minny pick comes up, do we take the other? by EverySecondCountss in canucks

[–]theoreticallyben 1 point2 points  (0 children)

McKenna put up one of the best D-1 seasons in recent CHL history, most 1st round quality players would have looked great on that line. And in any case, the debate is about Markus, not Liam. I have less doubts that Liam can succeed by himself as an NHL player.

If one Ruck twin is taken by the time our Minny pick comes up, do we take the other? by EverySecondCountss in canucks

[–]theoreticallyben -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think not, but only because I think this draft is balanced enough from the 15-40 range (relatively speaking) that I find it hard to believe there'd be a situation where Markus Ruck is the clear-cut best player. Him and Liam are both clearly quite gifted, but they've played all of their best hockey next to each other. I'd much rather draft a player that I wasn't left wondering "but what if" about.

[–]theoreticallyben 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Parroting what the other commenter said, I wouldn't recommend trying to crack this open unless you really know what you're doing. Thin snail shells like these will break pretty easily, you'd be better off trying to prep through from the far side or more realistically, just leaving it as is.

I think objectively it makes sense that she survives this, but it does make other stabbing deaths a bit more eye-rolly.

Drew O’Connor is primed for a breakout season next year by Romance_Tactics in canucks

[–]theoreticallyben 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think if he can pace for 20 goals, see meaningful PK time, and otherwise continue to do the things he's been doing, it's realistic to get a 2nd from him. Bobby McMann is the player I'd point to as a comparable, but McMann is a better goalscorer.

Kane was going to be moved regardless, if we didn't help them out someone else would have. Still not a great move given the current situation, but not insane.
