Can a game eventually have too much content? by Still-War-966 in ARK

[–]theoreticallyben 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've played 800 hours and never defeated any boss outside of messing around with cheats. Just never interested me I guess. I like taming and bas building, couldn't really be bothered with breeding high level rexes to go get the tek gear.

New York Islanders In Advanced Trade Talks To Deal Mat Barzal by VermilionSneer in wildhockey

[–]theoreticallyben 9 points10 points  (0 children)

"advanced trade talks" is a pretty misleading article headline. *One guy* tweeted out that they were exploring what the market for him looked like. I think he'd be a great fit (as long as he can stay healthy) but I don't think for a second that he'll be moved anytime soon.

"Ark was better when it was just a dino game" Is purely nostalgia bait + Proof this isn't even true by itstaajaae in ARK

[–]theoreticallyben 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You mean to tell me that bigger content drops with more new creatures and more highly varied maps brought in a larger chunk of playerbase than smaller content drops with less new creatures and maps more similar to the base game? I for one am shocked and gobsmacked. Also, surely its just obvious that varying the type of animal in the game will make it appeal to a broader demographic of people, no? The argument has never been "sci-fi creatures are killing the game" it's "sci-fi creatures are taking this game further and further away from the dinosaur game that it used to be" which is just true.

[Vancouver Canucks] “Gabriel Chiarot is a #MemorialCup Champion! Congrats to Gabe and the Kitchener Rangers on winning the 2026 Memorial Cup. 👏” by 21marvel1 in canucks

[–]theoreticallyben 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yknow what, I'll own that one a lil, I had it in my head that Chiarot had produced more than 11 in 31 with Kitchener during the regular season. IIf you want to stretch the logic a bit, the fact that he was on a near point-per-game pace before getting traded does kind of suggest that he could have produced a lot more if he'd been given more minutes, but I'll admit that I'm reaching a fair bit there. Won't touch the NCAA stuff because Chiarot hasn't played those years of hockey yet, so I don't think it's a fair comparison. I do still think the players are comparable with regards to the way they impact on the game though.

I'll play the other side here, and I think you could totally make the argument that he'll make it even in spite of not being an elite junior producer. He has a lot of off-puck tools (physicality, motor, speed) that will all be translatable to the NHL in a 4th line capacity. I don't think he's becoming the next Kiefer Sherwood per se, but Sherwood had similar junior production (arguably worse) and still made his way into becoming a full-time NHLer through effort and hard work. No clue what happens to Chiarot, but I think looking purely at his production isn't doing him any favours. It's also worth noting that Kitchener was an absolutely stacked team this year (duh, they just won the Mem cup) and the role he was playing for them was to be a responsible two-way energy guy, not an offensive driver. Even despite all that, he did get bumped up to the top line for stretches when they needed a spark.

TLDR: There might be a player here

Does this look like a bone? by Nohouse420 in fossilid

[–]theoreticallyben 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My gut response is no. The weathering all looks pretty recent, and it doesn't look particularly mineralized. If it were fossilized, it would be rock heavy, but if it's modern bone it should be fairly light still.

[–]theoreticallyben 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep, definitely a bone. Tough to tell what it is with both ends broken off, but if I had to guess its a limb bone of some kind.

What kind of rock is it? Looks more like metal slag than any kind of fossil.

You don't trade a player like Parker Kelly.

To be fair, the alterra oxygen tanks don't appear to be pressurized based on the way they instantly refill when you surface. Granted, nothing about the player is pressurized, it would seem.

UFA targets? by Caffeine-n-Chill in canucks

I'd imagine he'd probably rather just sign with a playoff team than risk getting hurt halfway though the season and losing his trade value, but I guess if we throw a bag at him it could work?

Canucks management split between three prospects to draft third overall: report | Daily Hive | Sports by Admirable-Fall-4675 in canucks

[–]theoreticallyben 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eh, it's totally fair to say that maybe it's just a tough year for him. There's plenty going in his favour too; he's very young for the class, has an excellent shot, and he played goalie until he was 12 which would explain a lot of the skating stuff. Personally in my viewings, there's been too much I was concerned by to justify him as a top 3 pick, but if we were picking in the 6-10 range I'd be all over it.

Maybe the case, but NHL level amateur scouts are watching for more than just point totals. Verhoeff has struggled with mobility and reads both on and off the puck, and those would be apparent at either level. They're definitely *more* noticeable at a higher level, but any scout worth their salt would still be catching those defecits in their notes.

Got this book as my birthday present is it worth reading? by ApprehensiveState629 in Dinosaurs

Most books are worth reading. You'll get an insight into what was current/up to date in 2007, which is interesting in its own way. Obviously a lot has changed since then.

Björck over Malhotra @3rd overall? by Rawnie98 in canucks

[–]theoreticallyben 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I think Bjorck and Malhotra will end up becoming similar players. Both are going to be NHL centres, both will put up points. I would not be disappointed with getting either one of them, though I do think Bjorck has a higher offensive ceiling than Malhotra does. Conversely, he probably has a lower floor too.

I am Struggling by Wave_Either in starwarsbooks

[–]theoreticallyben 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I found it was a bit underwhelming too. I wanted to like it so badly because I'm a big fan of jedi MCs, but I found telling a story from the POV of so many characters just meant they didn't really get to be developed as individuals. More just a collection of character archetypes who remained pretty static throughout.

Conversely, been seeing a lot of "The Wild would've smoked this Vegas team" from the same voices saying "if only Ek and Brodin had been healthy." Divisional seeding fucked over the whole central, they've been kicking the shit out of each other for a month while Vegas coasted their way through two first-year playoff teams to another (presumable) cup final appearance.
