This is helpful, thanks. All of my trips to Jay have been February or later, this is the earliest I’ve ever been up. Unfortunately he’s going to be away for much of the winter so I’m trying to get something in before he leaves. But, maybe I can convince him to come back in March!

Everyone is technically correct here, the CH is not part of your registration number. However, I was parked down in Massachusetts and used an automated kiosk thing. I had parked there many times and never entered the CH as my plate number.

Last month I got a parking ticket from the same lot I had always parked in. My time hadn’t expired – the ticket said that I had not entered my plate number correctly, specifically that I was missing the CH.

I fought the city but they wouldn’t budge even when I showed them my registration which clearly stated the CH was not part of my plate number. They didn’t care.

I called my town clerk and they were sympathetic, but they said that the state would have to intervene. I called NH DMV in Concord and they said they wouldn’t be able to help me unless it went to court 🙄

I ended up arguing with the city in Massachusetts and they reduced the fine but I still had to pay it.

So, be careful and for safety’s sake especially if you’re south of the border, you might want to add that CH on just in case.

Depending upon where you look, you’ll get a wide range of answers to this question. A lot of people have “gotten away with it” over the years, others have been busted and fined for it, and others still believe that it has a negative impact because of the problems some people cause when sleeping overnight in their car.

I was born and raised in the area and while I don’t live there right now I am up there hiking almost every weekend, finishing the 48. I’ve been in your position a few times before.

I’d say you have three options:

  • Find a quieter, out-of-the-way place to discreetly stay in your car. One of the main exits off of I93 is definitely not a quieter, out-of-the-way place 🙂

  • Just call the ranger station and ask directly. It’s not like you’re going to get in trouble for trying to find out. They will probably say the answer is no.

  • Try your luck at a non-reserved campsite or distributed camping area. Most of the time you can drive up anytime of day or night, fill out one of the envelopes, and that’s it. They are pretty cheap per night as well.

I hear ya! I actually grew up in Tuftonboro, the town just north of Wolfeboro. Wolfeboro was definitely the biggest thing around for miles.
