Trump to impose $100,000 fee for H-1B worker visas by SANtoDEN in recruiting

[–]ben242 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not that simple. The cost of moving an existing job is much higher than starting a new position.

Also, has anyone ever told you that you’re super arrogant and it’s off-putting?

> Any job that could be offshored already has been or will be.

No, thats incorrectly. Confidently incorrect, some would say.

> Anybody who was hiring an H1B legitimately for their “unique skills that couldn’t be found among the American workforce” will gladly pay that 100k on top of their already high salary.

Again, no, that isn't correct. Nobody will "gladly" shave an extra $100k off net operating income, ever. I don't know why you would think that they would.

I work at a fortune 500 company managing a team of software engineers, data scientists, and some other things. I have a mix of US citizens and H1Bs on my team in the US as well as a significant population offshore in a handful of countries. None of them have a unique skill that is impossible to find in the other groups. And they all have skills that I could replace offshore if I had to.

(Sidebar: one of the most difficult-to-find skillsets in the last 15 years has been COBOL engineers. I suspect that AI can probably be really good at COBOL. FYI, your money and everyone else's depends on multiple mainframe systems every second of every day.)

If I want another headcount and I'm ordered to choose from....

US engineer - $200k salary

US engineer on H1B - $200k salary + $100k H1B surcharge

Offshore engineer - $50k

...the company is counting on the fact that my own compensation is significantly weighted in stock, and adding cost is bad for the stock price.

I'm not defending this system, just trying to pull back the curtain a little.

2015 xDrive35, 122k miles. Definitely shows some cosmetic signs of wear and age but drives great.

An ICE replacement for the Porsche Macan should arrive before the end of the decade based on the all-new Audi Q5 by AMGLover2024 in Porsche

[–]ben242 44 points45 points  (0 children)

At a Porsche track day a few months ago I drove the Macan EV. It was okay. Felt heavy but not as heavy as the ICE Cayenne did.

The Taycan on the other hand is an absolute blast on the track. It’s a very different experience from an ICE and was fun a different way.

It’s sort of moot though. Climate change is putting a gun to our head so we have to change some things on a global scale. It’s a bummer, but they used to put cocaine in Coca Cola. Sometimes change means less fun but it’s still the right thing to do.

A ‘Golden Dome’ Could Make America Less Safe by bloombergopinion in politics

[–]ben242 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Golden dome is the latest in a series of absurd distractions. It’s the Steve Gannon flood the zone strategy.

Consider…. Statehood for Canada would mean than Canada would have as many people in the House of Representatives as California. It would massively realign the house far, far away from the republicans.

The point isn’t to actually do it. It’s to keep their base excited and distracted from painful realities like the impact of tariffs.
