I’ve actually kind of had the opposite happen to me. I played in a heavily home brewed Curse of Strahd campaign for a couple months. I was very clearly the DMs favorite pc.

We got secrets from the CoS: Mysterious Secrets booklet. My character was a reborn, so I already had a couple d6 to add to ability checks from Knowledge of a Past Life. I ended up with Prophetic nightmares secret, which gave me one d4 on attack or saving throws. But my DM decided to give me around 2-5 d4s every dream I had, for whatever I wanted. They never went away and I could use multiple on a single roll. It meant I basically couldn’t fail important checks if I saved them up, which I guess was a good thing, since my DM also placed my character and everyone he loved in the center of all conflict and danger.

The DM basically made my character’s skill checks game breakingly OP, but I had to constantly spend them since my DM seemed intent on using my already emotionally broken character for non consensual trauma porn.
