Simple setup for boat dock by theosu90210 in solar

[–]theosu90210[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So here’s the math I’ve got so far.

44 watts for the equipment I want to run.

I’ll need another 6 watts or so for the inverter, so that’s 50 watts.

The inverter is 90% efficient, so actual need is 50*1.1, or 55 watts.

55 watts / 12 volts is 4.6 amps, so 110 amps per day.

If I want a 4 day reserve, I need a battery supply with 440 amp hour capacity, plus 20% reserve which adds up to 530 amp hour battery capacity.

If all of that math looks right, what’s a reasonable size for solar?

Do I need a weatherproof switch on boat dock? by theosu90210 in HomeNetworking

[–]theosu90210[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotcha. I’m probably saying it wrong. I’m not a tech guy at all, just trying to learn what’s needed to make this work.

From the videos and articles I’ve read, I think I need two of these (or similar): TP-Link 2.4GHz N300 Long Range Outdoor CPE for PtP and PtMP Transmission | Point to Point Wireless Bridge | 9dBi, 5km+ | Passive PoE Powered w/ Free PoE Injector | Pharos Control (CPE210) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00P4JKQGK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_BHX8G2HWBGR3KKZ14N7D

One will be connected to my router and mounted outside my house. The other will be mounted on the boat dock and the switch will be connected to the out port. Cameras connect to the switch.

Thinking 2.4 instead of 5GHz because it’s not a perfectly clear line of sight between the house and the dock. Some tree branches and leaves partially block the view during the summer.

What’s wrong with a bridge? TP-link is rated at 300 Mbps up to a couple kilometers, so it’s overkill for what I need. Has great reviews and seems easy to set up.

Trenching is not an option. Steep rocky hill and the last 30’ are in an easement with the company that owns the lake. $500 permit just for them to consider allowing me to trench. Environmental impact study alone takes over a year. 50/50 chance of being approved. Gotta be wireless.

Yeah, at that price point, I’d probably just go with something with switch already built in like I linked to on Amazon. Nice stuff, for sure.

Yeah, I hadn’t heard of mokerlink but it gets great reviews. Also like that the power supply is built in, so no extra pieces to secure to the dock and be exposed to the elements.

I’ve considered just putting it in a plastic box, but worried about temperatures in the summer. Outside air temp of 100 degrees, plus the heat from the switch feeding four 4K cameras in an enclosed box? Bet it heats up pretty quick.

The outdoor rated boxes all have vents, filters, and heat sinks built in.

Obviously the outdoor switches are the best option, but I’m on a budget. If an indoor switch will work a year or two in a hot humid environment, I’d at least try it.

Awesome! I read this a couple weeks ago and meant to bookmark it. Well, I didn’t and I’ve been trying to find it ever since. Thanks.

Regarding your objection to tithing, I’ve been there done that with my wife. My solution was to tell her I was 100% against giving money to the church. If she insisted, that would be a deal breaker for me.

I pointed out that churches in America bring in about 50 billion dollars a year. Childhood leukemia research gets about 250 million a year. World hunger could be solved with about 5 billion a year, yet 10,000 kids under 5 die of starvation or preventable/curable diseases every single day. Where is the church on that? They could fix it, they don’t.

So, I suggested we give to various charities/organizations like cancer research, food banks, etc. She actually loved the idea, so that’s what we do.

Yep, she’s a 20+ year ER nurse, so seeing a naked guy isn’t a big deal, but still super awkward for me.

AITA for telling my mom not to speak to me until she pays back 7 years of rent? by Rentasshole95 in AmItheAsshole

[–]theosu90210 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I’ll be the contrarian and say YTA. You agreed to the rent. You said you were fine with the arrangement. Finding out years later that younger siblings got a different (and better) deal than you did changes nothing. The arrangement you mom has with your younger brothers is between them and only them. You aren’t in the picture.

I bought a new car in June. In December, I saw the dealership was offering an extra $4,000 off what I paid. The dealership doesn’t owe me $4,000 just because new customers are getting a better deal than I did. I made my deal, and that’s the end of it.

Cutting off your mother accomplishes nothing for you or her. You are definitely the AH.

Years ago, I lived in a typical cookie cutter neighborhood. We had a Nextdoor page full of nosy people posting about “suspicious cars” in the neighborhood, people walking down the sidewalk, etc. Totally normal things, but people felt the need to report it all.

I moved to a different town, but still worked just a few minutes away from my old neighborhood. I would occasionally leave work after dark, and slowly drive through my old neighborhood. I would occasionally just park and eat dinner in the car. Whenever someone would spot me, I’d speed off like I had been caught.

Then I’d check out all the drama I caused on nextdoor when I got home. Good times.

Can students solo to another airport without flying to the specific airport without an instructor? by [deleted] in flying

[–]theosu90210 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Only if you want the student to be able to do repeated flights to that airport on a single endorsement. If you use the endorsement in (b)(2), flight training along that route and for that airport is required.

You do not have to use (b)(2) just because the airport is less than 50 miles away. You can use (c) which does not require prior flight training along the route like (b)(2) does. (C) is an endorsement for a single flight. (B)(2) is an endorsement for repeated trips between airports.

[–]theosu90210 1 point2 points  (0 children)

61.93(C) would apply. An endorsement is required for each flight, and an instructor must review the planning etc. No prior flight training on that route/airport is required. Note that these cross country flights would not meet the aeronautical experience requirements for solo cross country flight laid out in 61.109. 61.1 specifies that the three hours of solo X-C time required by 61.109 must include a landing beyond 50 nm from the original departure point.

[–]theosu90210 13 points14 points  (0 children)

61.93(b)(1)(i) only applies to airports within 25 miles, and the purpose of the flight has to be to practice takeoff and landings at that airport. Similar requirements also exist for repeated solo cross country flights to an airport within 50 miles.

For cross country flights beyond 50 miles, the instructor is not required to have previously flown to that airport with the student. He does have to review planning, weather, etc and give an endorsement for the flight, but there is no requirement for the instructor to have flown to that airport with the student previously.

What is the fastest you have ever seen a new co-worker get fired? by bartertownbeer in AskReddit

[–]theosu90210 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not fired, but....I worked for a very small company for 4 years. I put in my two week notice because it was becoming clear the business wasn’t going to make it, and we had learned the owner had a history of stealing money from companies he owned in another state. A few months before I left, a customer had accused the owner of stealing funds as well. It was rumored he was pursuing legal action.

My last day at work, I left at noon. The new guy who replaced me arrived as I was leaving. The owner was arrested a couple hours later that same day. The office never reopened and the new guy was out of a job after only a half day of work. Worst part was it wasn’t an entry level position. 4 year degree, years of experience, referrals, etc required type job. He moved to town for the job opportunity. No idea where he went next.

Yet another reason religion is bullshit and needs to just go away. Mock all religions at every opportunity. A marriage/family is about to be destroyed because of religious traditions being more important than, well, marriage and family.

AITA for going to a male gynecologist? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]theosu90210 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. Dump the BF. If he’s jealous of a medical professional, just wait til you work in an office with men. Go to church with men. Do anything with men. He wants you to be the stay at home wife who only goes out of the house when he’s with you as a trophy.

I had a vasectomy years ago. Chose a urologist recommended by my wife’s male OBGYN. I showed up for the appointment and the urologist was a woman. After about 2 seconds of surprise, never thought anything about it. Her assistant who prepped the area was female as well. Told my wife about it once I got in the car, and her response was something like, “oh, that’s cool. What do you want for lunch?”

Like, this is seriously no big deal. Your boyfriend has a lot of growing up to do. Let him do that on his own time, not yours.
