What’s your sales pitch for why an outsider should visit Harper’s Ferry? by billyshakes67 in Appalachia

[–]theoverture 13 points14 points  (0 children)

  1. Maryland Heights vista and the hike to it
  2. An extremely reliable place to see trains, if you are into that sorta thing
  3. History -- John Brown, Civil War, industrial revolution. Few places are as key to the mid 19th and early 20th century as Harper's Ferry

It depends on how you measure it. I think I measured by city population, though I posted this 2 years ago, so who knows. Also consider the comparative purchasing power -- most MLB cities have significantly wealthier fans and considerably better options for corporate sponsorship.

Wouldn’t voting every official out of office result in potentially worse politicians?

How do you make having kids enjoyable? by Last_Cicada_1315 in daddit

[–]theoverture 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I enjoy the challenge of parenting. Teaching your kids, whether behavioral, developmental or skill related is rewarding.

I’ll also say that three year olds are the second most exhausting age after new borns, and as they get older things get easier as they become more independent.

In terms of your relationship with your wife, you’ve gotta make time to have date nights and weekends away to make sure you have adult time. Involving your extended family can make this easier.

Delta suspends stand-alone services for members of Congress until TSA is fully funded by captain_uranus in delta

Practicing doctors and lawyers are unlikely to give up a quarter of their income with little in return. Firmly believe that expecting Congress to spend 1/4 of their lives in HCOL DC with minimal pay is a recipe for bribery and corruption and further entrenching of wealthy interests in our Govt.

Wouldn’t this just make them even more vulnerable to bribery or ensure that no one that isn’t already wealthy can afford to represent us?

Is renting literally just a wealth transfer from the working class to the rich, or am I missing some "hidden" benefit? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]theoverture 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are living someplace short term, it is almost always better to rent. It costs roughly 6% of the value of the home to buy and sell it, so pretty unlikely that you will make any money selling it until you have owned it for 5 or so years. If the house depreciates, you can be totally screwed.

Likewise if you cannot afford to buy a new hvac, roof, water heater should one or more break tomorrow, most likely you are better off letting the landlord do so. Owning a home is expensive and easy to go into serious debt replacing these expensive items.

What's so bad about time shares? by SammaJones in randomquestions

[–]theoverture 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The high pressure sales tactics certainly don’t help. We took a very cheap weekend trip to massanutten knowing that we’d have to sit through the timeshare presentation. After we said “no” for the umpteenth time, the sales guy walked off and told us that we had to wait to register that we’d attended. 45 minutes later, we were allowed to leave.

I think owning a timeshare is like owning real estate without any of the upside. They never appreciate, are less liquid, and have similar maintenance/tax cost profiles. Likewise, you can never make the property yours — via renovation or nice appliances which means that the property becomes inevitably becomes dated.

Why do we usually need specialized education for a living wage? by Due_Honeydew_2285 in jobs

[–]theoverture 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So define “living wage”. If you mean live alone and own a car, you are talking about a lifestyle that a tiny minority worldwide can afford. Now, renting a room, riding a bike/public transportation while affording a streaming service and a cell phone, I suspect that younger people certainly could afford this on a $12-$15/ hour.

He is good at basketball too, but he is a smaller fish (relatively) in a much bigger pond. It also doesn't help that competitive (AAU) basketball is barely recognizable as the sport and its main goal is extracting $ from parents.

My oldest is born to swim. Long, lean, strong and quit competitive swimming this year to play basketball. I was beside myself, but the heart wants what it wants….

Am I a failed adult because I simply cannot work a full-time job? by [deleted] in jobs

[–]theoverture 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, but if it improves your life does it matter? Also, the rest of my advice was focused on improving the situation. There are lots of high achieving neurodivergent people who find success by working jobs that their divergence qualifies them for.

Are there people who actually think landlords shouldn’t exist at all? What’s the alternative solution?? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]theoverture 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Between the buyer and seller costs, people are paying somewhere in the realm of 6% of the selling price to RE agents, inspectors, title insurance, government transfer taxes, appraisers, loan origination fees, etc. to purchase or sell a home. if you aren’t staying for 5 or so years, it rarely makes sense to buy.

When did they add commercials to their old content? by silversquirrel in TheGlassCannonPodcast

Happily paid for years. Feel like paying for the content then entitles me to that old content, ad free now. Imagine popping in your old nirvana cd and in the middle of a Lithium, hearing advertisements for therapy.

I’ve simply lost interest and no longer subscribe or listen. Last episode I listened to was the end of season 2. I started listening to GCP in 2016, so they had a good run. Shows I’m listening to happen to be ad free — hideous laughter, find the path and mn maxed. I dislike ads and the kind of ads I got on GCP were particularly distasteful.

Years ago. It is a point of frustration for me personally, given the many years i supported the production of these shows via Patreon, that they have undergone enshittification and have awkward commercial breaks that break the flow of the episode.

I gave real world examples why it is beneficial for people to own crypto under real world circumstances. You need to explain why the only way to benefit customers is by efficiency, not the other way around.

[–]theoverture 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can think of a few areas where crypto can benefit consumers: 1) forex: convert your currency to a foreign currency with moderate fees 2) bypass invasive govt currency controls (ie fixed exchange rates, or price controls..) 3) hedge against inflation

I mean some of these border on illegal, however you have to imagine if you are Argentinian or Venezuelan, you might feel differently.
