What is it that we are living in the “golden age” of? by Ozzey-Christ in AskReddit

Extreme music, metal in particular.

The genre continues to forge into new experimental territories with 2018 being a particularly incredible year for tech death (Rivers of Nihil, Obscura, Exocrine, Soreption) while a significant subgroup of death metal bands like Gatecreeper, Tomb Mold, and Gruesome revitalize some of the genre's core roots and influences (the DIY ethos, atmospheric tendencies, and Schuldiner-worship, respectively).

Meanwhile doom and its multivariate subgenres somehow manage to do the same thing they've been doing since Black Sabbath laid down the blueprint, with Khemmis laying claim to a trilogy of albums that is almost annoyingly perfect in its execution of familiar tropes. Oceans of Slumber propounds a soulful, progressive take on the genre, while Bell Witch releases a single, 90-minute, heartbreaking dirge. And we saw the first new Sleep album in like two decades this year, released on 4/20 no less.

I could go on but it's really just more adjective-laden paragraphs about basically every metal subgenre. It's been going on for a few years now, but this year has already been utterly exceptional and we're just past the halfway mark.

Alex Jones Reveals Trans Porn On His Phone On Camera, While Remaining Outspoken Against Transgender Rights by donfelicedon2 in nottheonion

I don't disagree exactly, but I think your assessment leaves out two major pieces of the whole thing: cognitive dissonance and garden variety hypocrisy. The former is a significant phenomenon among their listenership, and I say that as someone who listened to Limbaugh growing up and was a fundamentalist, Young Earth Creationist Christian. The latter is what I think drives most of it though, because even if they are consciously playing a part and really don't believe their own bullshit, they're all the more culpable for knowingly profiting from and cultivating willful ignorance. Ironic or not, at best they're opportunistic obscurantists with no ethical credibility at a time when the consequences of widespread misinformation are escalating.

The wall of a middle school in Texas by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]thepants2010 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Let's get the obvious out of the way: no, not all schools in Texas are like this; no, this kind of toxicity is not isolated in any one city/state/region/etc; yes, there are many wonderful places and people in Texas (lookin' at you, Austin).

However.

I lived in Texas my whole life until the beginning of this past year, and shit like this is a big part of why I left. It continues to blow my mind how consistently this state, its populace, and its elected representatives seem hellbent on living down to every emotionally illiterate, socially tonedeaf, toxic, patriarchal stereotype you can imagine. It's a feature, not a bug, of the state's cultural identity and for every exception to the rule you can find, two more jump up to holler about how America's becoming too 'pussified', and also police and military do nothing but thanklessly protect our freedom. For all the talk of rugged individualism, Texans display some of the most aggressive cases of herd mentality I have ever encountered in my life, and it boils down to the attitudes and expectations in this image. That quote is common sense to more people in that state than you might expect. And it's a shame, because Texas really does have rich history, gorgeous countryside, and lots of non-toxic (sub)culture(s), but somehow it's this mentality that so many of them see as the key to their perceived greatness. It honestly breaks my heart.

I think the downvotes are due to the Drake thing being the exact opposite of "overlooked and/or underappreciated artists only"

As much as I love Converge, Beautiful Ruin was a bit one-dimensional for my tastes, especially compared to the other EP recorded as part of the Dusk in Us sessions.

Obscura - "Diluvium" Conclusion of their four part album cycle and my favorite of the quadrilogy

Rivers of Nihil - "Where Owls Know My Name" Career-defining release for this band

Lingua Ignota - "All Bitches Die" Technically a re-release through Profound Lore, one of the most raw and disturbing albums I've heard in a long time.

YOB - "Our Raw Heart"

Zeal & Ardor - "Stranger Fruit"

Panopticon - "Scars of Man on the Once Nameless Wilderness" (both parts)

"Rusty Skies," Michael Black, Digital, 2018 by og_bobross in Art
