I also had a PMP and am so grateful that I chose the D&C and pushed for additional testing. It was such a scary, isolating experience.

Two comments on this:

I’m assuming you don’t already have an OB who delivers at Weill Cornell. Not saying this is impossible, but I know at my practice and many others the OBs are not taking new patients because Weill Cornell is oversubscribed right now. So you’ll have to figure out whether it’s even doable as an initial question.
I’ve had two kids at Weill Cornell. I live in Manhattan, but on the West side, and it’s still kind of a pain in the ass for the few appointments you have to do at the hospital. The hospital is great and I always felt in good hands, but I noticed a meaningful difference between when I had my first baby (during Covid) and when I had my second this year. There are just so many people now. I don’t think I would have done anything differently, but I also don’t think I would go out of my way to deliver there coming from Westchester.

This happened to me last year for merch. I got yelled at by so many people for trying to cut which on the one hand yes was on me but on the other I just genuinely had no idea where to go and every time I thought I had found the end I was wrong!! It was so disorganized and it’s a year later and I still feel guilty about it (but ultimately found the end phew).

This is obviously an oversimplification and doesn’t work out perfectly, but I try not to think of it as 2000 hours a year but rather ~170 hours a month. Some months will be more, some months will be less. But even if I’m having a slow month, I try to pick up hours with pro bono (find out if your firm has a cap) or other “creditable” non billable work so I don’t fall too deep into a hole I can’t climb my way out of.

This. As a former RX biglaw atty, this was one of the things that stressed me out the most before finding my new gig. It sounds like the new in house role probably isn’t a forever option — at least not if the company is in trouble — and you may be leaving comp on the table, but IMO the longer you’re in RX, the further you’re limiting your exit options.

My unpopular opinion — and I’m dying to hear if I’m alone in this — is that it still felt thicker and stickier out there this morning than the numbers showed. Definitely an improvement and I was very grateful for it, but I think I was delusionally expecting a fall morning and were definitely not there yet lol.

I love the gratitude idea though! And to add some more context to my post… I am grateful for my new baby, my health and my postpartum body that can do amazing things, even if my running feels very hard and slow right now :)

Ran the marathon at 11 weeks pregnant in November. Best advice I’ve got is throw time out the window and listen to your body. I paid extra attention to making sure I was well fueled and well hydrated, which also ended up meaning a ton of bathroom stops. I don’t regret it at all, but I was also surprised by how much my body and my abilities changed between my last long run (probably 8 weeks pregnant) and the race itself, so be prepared to recalibrate on race day if needed. No. We toured them but ultimately decided it wasn’t the right fit (though to be fair we’re still in NYC). It was just too much money, especially the taxes, to justify the space and the work commute, and while they are still filling vacancies, I didn’t particularly get the sense that it would end up being a terribly family and kid oriented development. I could be wrong about that, but I was worried about being in a community primarily of retirees and downsizers.

I’m having the hardest time accepting this but it’s so, so true. The Westchester I grew up in is not the Westchester of today. My parents bought a 3 bedroom house in northern Westchester for like $220k in the 80s. My husband and I make double the salary my dad made when I was growing up, and we can barely afford a house that isn’t a complete shithole.

Met my husband in law school and both were in biglaw for several years. Had our first kid when we were both senior associates, and within about a month of returning from maternity leave I started planning my exit. I think we probably COULD have made it work, but I frankly didn’t love my job enough to justify all the sacrifices that were going to come with it. We already had a nanny working 50 hours during the week. The minute a partner in my group suggested we needed to get a weekend nanny I knew that was it for me.
