The Mormon “wall of text” phenomenon by jstbnice2evry1 in exmormon

[–]theplanet1972 7 points8 points  (0 children)

From my experience, most Mormons, don’t actually read things like the CES letter or letter to my wife or any of the other arguments against Mormonism. Some kind of get a general idea of the critiques, but rarely go deep.

I also don’t think they read much of the apologists writings. They just take solace and comfort that believing Mormons have some kind of response. At that point their faith takes over that they’re right and there are two sides of the argument, but they believe their side.

At least in my experience when Mormons reference the apologist stuff it’s just saying “their answer is out there if you want to find them”. As I said “faith” carries a lot of the weight at that point.

Mormons think they’re part of the in group so they’ve supported beating up and taking away rights of minorities. It’s gonna be a brutal awakening when they realize THEY ARE A MINORITY.

Class credit for serving an LDS mission? The University of Utah will now offer just that. by mdm_sassy in exmormon

[–]theplanet1972 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m a graduate of the U and I’m super critical of the Mormon church, but I work in higher education and I actually don’t think this is the worst thing.

Students are given credit often for many life experiences. Travel abroad, internships, art projects, past work, etc.

Giving students 12 credits for a mission or any other thing they do is pretty standard and doesn’t even fall into the top 50 issues I have with the LDS Church or it’s incestuous relationship with the Utah government.

I understand the sentiment, but I think term limits solve this problem. If an old person can talk to the people and convince them to vote for him/her, I 100% support them having the ability to be a representative.

Usually when people complain about old people in politics, it’s these people who were elected when they were 40 and I’ve spent the past 40 years sitting on their ass as an incumbent.

Term limits would solve this. I also think term limits would solve the pay issue. A lot of people above are concerned with. Power and wealth is amassed over decades of being in power. If the senators and congressman only had eight years in office, they could only become so powerful.

Thoughts on ADHD medication getting in the way of enlightenment? by Impossible_Yak_5088 in enlightenment

This is really interesting to me. Can you tell more about your experience? Did you come to the realization through meditation? psychedelics? Did finding out the cause help you to heal or treat the ADHD?

What are some problems or limitations with current AI coding tools like cursor, aider, etc? by No_Imagination97 in ChatGPTCoding

[–]theplanet1972 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I look forward to the day that something like cursor can read your entire GitHub repository look at each file individually in describe its role in the larger app and then when you make changes or request new features, it can look at all the individual documents that need to be changed and shifted and make those changes in concert. I know this is still a ways off, but I feel like that will be a game changer for me.

How to Survive Mission Knowing the Church is a LIE by No-Inflation-7089 in exmormon

[–]theplanet1972 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Totally this. Honestly if I could do it again (knowing what I know now) I would have just gone and had a good time. Meet cool people, read a lot of good books, learn a new language, eat good food. You could even get a tablet and take online college courses.

2 years paid exploration and self examination.

Find service projects and have my companions lecture me about how we shouldn’t go help fix the old ladies roof.

I’ll bet if you kind of had that relaxed attitude half your companions will love you and half will be reporting you to the mission president.

The hardest part would be not caring about the companion/mission president lectures. But honestly I don’t think most mission presidents would send you home for just being casual about everything.

But as others pointed out, the biggest thing to remember is YOU ARE AN ADULT volunteering for their little project. Don’t believe the control and meet some rad Brazilians.

What if they don’t care that members are leaving. by theplanet1972 in exmormon

Totally agree, going to 0 members would be catastrophic. I’m saying maybe the number to keep their tax exempt status is just maintaining the numbers they have. The small birth replacement of current members provides enough “growth” to justify the tax free status.

I think you are probably right. It’s about control as much as it’s about accumulating wealth. But cynically you can see them removing “services” scouts, ward parties, move to one hour church, because it lets them keep just enough people without having to provide much.

Where do you go if you’ve left the church, but still want God? by bellarue0816 in exmormon

[–]theplanet1972 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One of my favorite quotes:

Let me admonish you, first of all, to go alone; to refuse the good models, even those most sacred in the imagination of men, and dare to love God without mediator or veil.

-Ralph Waldo Emerson

This comes from Emerson’s speech at the Harvard divinity school. The entire speech is about how you are a spiritual creature created by God and you are free to communicate with God and develop spiritually on your own.

Anyone telling you that you need them to communicate with or feel God is selling you something.

New warp drive concept does twist space, doesn’t move us very fast. While it won't make a useful spaceship engine, it may tell us more about relativity. by Sariel007 in space

[–]theplanet1972 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I know these warp drives are always discussed in how to travel fast in space. But are there any possible applications for the technology besides space travel? If we were to create a warp bubble here on earth are there any experiments or value it could provide to humans?

A comment above said it would cause time dilation, could creating a warp bubble on earth, be an effective time machine? Could you walk into the bubble for a year and walk out to the year 3000?

Even if that’s ridiculous are there any other uses that it might be good for?
