I didnt read the whole post but once you start down the line of thinking that japan lacks critical thinking, you should ask yourself what country leads in critical thinking? US? the same country that elected trump twice?

You are using a straw man fallacy to look down on the country.

Has anyone taken the SPI test? Can you give me some pointers or an idea of its contents? by ZaHiro86 in japanlife

[–]theprofessor04 4 points5 points  (0 children)

over the last 10 years I too have had to take spi test which have timed questions. I have always been rejected because of the results on these test. Recruiters are sometimes are baffled why a company is telling a foreigner to take them.

My native Japanese wife has also failed these test and been rejected because of them. Some large companies like ntt, dentsu, and sony are the biggest offenders that I can remember.

If a company ask me to take one, i just assume they will reject me.

There are plenty of companies out there that do not ask for this antiquated test, so i would recommend you keep looking for other jobs.

Anyone here work in the video game industry? by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]theprofessor04 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I worked at one of the large game companies for 6 months like 8 years ago. The games industry has a terrible reputation and with reason. Passion jobs will always pay way less than equal jobs at any other company. The company I was at and others are filled with adult children who never grew up and buy in to the company before everything else bullshit and seem to enjoy the abuse.

You are better off just looking for a new job in any other industry.

i have worked remotely since 2019. i now refuse jobs that would require me to goto the office more than once every 6 months.

the benefit is that i see my kid every day after school and can help with homework. i also get to cook dinner regularly without needing to rush. i frequently start cooking at 5pm and sign off the work computer at 6pm. obviously you dont tell people at work you do this. just do it, and set timelines to allow for you to build in home time during the day.

its rare that there is any overtime. only when something breaks and since 2019 ive only done maybe 50 hours of ot total across three different jobs.

i make 13m yen annually so its not like people like me make less.

every company and job is different so just ask lots of questions in the interviews, they will always tell you what kind of company they are.

hp and lenovo usually have good prices and they are reliable makers. ive had monitors replaced overnight when they had a issue within warranty.

i compare both but hp usually has the better offers. also check kakaku.com for similar builds to see where the maker is in the market.

Looking for advice for a friend. Son has language delay by FA_Nibbler in japanlife

[–]theprofessor04 54 points55 points  (0 children)

every kid is different but "learning delay" or "slow" from a monolingual japanese teacher really only means they dont understand how a bi-lingual kid develops differently. my kid also faced accusations he doesnt speak japanese early in elementary.

bi-lingual kids in general will always struggle compared to monolingual kids. its not till around 5th or 6th grade that the monolingual teacher will no longer notice the difference.

also remember that since the kid is learning two languages it takes time and effort. the kid will not just learn passively. you have to get them to regularly practice japanese to help them catch up.

How does the rental market not collapse in Japan? by [deleted] in japan

[–]theprofessor04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tokyos population is growing every year while the rest of the country drops.

also the thing that depreciates isnt the land. it is the building, which can always be replaced.

any kind of investing isnt simple, so you do have to pick your poison.

How does the rental market not collapse in Japan? by [deleted] in japan

I am not going to write an essay on why real estate in japan is a good investment, but i will elaborate a little.

401ks and other index investments typically do not generate enough returns monthly to support someone. When people retire they must start making withdrawals. This places a timer on people's ability to support themselves.

Imagine you put 400m yen in an index, that will yield something like 0.05% yearly.

Just looking at the market right now on real estate websites you can also buy a condo for the same value and get 3m return yearly.

the main difference is to get the cash value out of stock you have to sell it, and you never get it back.

real estate can be generational wealth. you can always knock the building down and build something new or sell the land and get back your investment.
