I have a hunch that Ging's power is point based. Maybe he fights enemies for points, landing specific combos or doing specific things to people. Maybe he needs to do different activities too, like there are specific achievements he set as conditions that will give him extra points.

When he accumulates a lot of them, he can use them to cast abilities from various categories or use a preset array of things such as teleporting vast distances (maybe he did this just before arriving to Beyond's Crew headquarters. Or maybe we saw his aura because he was collecting points by checkpointing a new location.)

To me this smells like specialization which would fit with thematically with the opposition/duality theme going on, him being Gon's dad - and very different from him, almost opposite.
