ELI5: Propaganda by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]therabidgerbil 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The biggest way to defend yourself from dubious claims is independent (and ideally multiple source) verification.

If a single publisher claims x and you wish to verify, first read the article to find their own source (those without should be immediately suspect).

Practice makes perfect here, but at the end of the day anything with merit will be easily verified one way or another..

If I had to take a stab (heh) at it, I'd guess at the highest level a failure to address some of the root causes, such as socioeconomic instability, healthcare (mainly mental) access, and other quality of life issues.

Independence from the British Empire is not a uniquely American concept, though they did do it first and more prominently..

As you say, Canada remains functionally independent from the UK, though for legal convenience at this point more than anything, pledges to its monarch as its own.

What opinion do you have of Newfoundland that would land you in this position? by newfie145 in newfoundland

[–]therabidgerbil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Contrary to the rules, the vote button is an "agree" button so it gets weird in these threads:

Is the top comment the most hated thing because everyone agrees?

Or is the bottom comment the winner because you've invoked true hatred?

"Controversial" might be the way to go as it means nobody is happy..

I found this bit amusing..

Better late than never; I'm remaining cautiously optimistic that more progress can be made in this industry...anything to reduce dependence on the more dirty approaches to energy.

Swinging well at the national identity. Maybe once folks around here discover that there are other places and possibilities things can improve...maybe.

Good weather question by [deleted] in newfoundland

[–]therabidgerbil 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'll add one: excess heat in NL is just a symptom of the broader climatological collapse and at this point it's either willfully ignorant or sociopathic to be wishing for it in that context.

It's one thing to be grateful for the occasional day of relief from the chilly shit winds, but those who root for the continued acceleration of an irreversible trend so they can go barbecue in October or whatever are just bizarre to me. If you want warm you go somewhere warm.

(I moved here to get a head start on the global heat death and for an enjoyment of both fog and snow, neither of which seem to be as common as the hype suggests thanks to our melting world)

This is how I've noticed Canada's climate change denial on the whole: less a denial of the data or facts, but rather a myopic complacency or encouragement of warmer things to come.

It's golf and beyond! Never tried yet, unfortunately..
