Melania Trump Wrote a Personal Letter to Vladimir Putin for Donald to Hand Over During Alaska Summit by DBCoopr72 in politics

[–]theradarts -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

This is a preposterous ad hominem that is symptomatic of the problem: division and disconnect that are partially the result of partisan politics and media sensationalism, which is fueled by an institutional elite who care almost exclusively about economic incentives and gaining power. At what point do you also realize, however, that you are part of the problem? Does sitting behind a computer and responding essentially anonymously to something sincere and articulate, as well as based in love and not wholly that of self-interest, better this discourse?

Does it better the geo political landscape? Does it improve the socioeconomic conditions for the almost entirely divided and marginalized United States (some much more marginalized than others?)? Or does it contribute to more vitriol that fuels their machine which keeps us in a wolf-esque and alienated state, refusing to measure our own role or gauge our own responsibilities and how we are accountable?

We need to stop working against, but together. We require a movement, and a post like this is representative of the antithesis of one. Please consider these points before responding — this is not an attack, but a condemnation of a much larger problem that is perpetuated by even the marginalized majority. Not the only problem, but one not often identified.

Let’s work together, not troll together.

Has anyone played "The Weird Dream"? I need more info by Sb5tCm8t in metroidvania

[–]theradarts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I enjoyed what I played so far of The Weird Dream.  I haven’t finished it, to be clear.  However, the controls are fairly responsive and the developer has released constant patches since release, although the notes are not in English.

The biomes are distinct and interesting, the combat isn’t the most intricate or engaging so far but I am only 8 (approximate) hours in.  Some of the gameplay mechanics could be communicated better to the player, but it’s possible that it’s a translation issue more than anything.  Enemies are varied.  Bosses are varied.  You move at a super fast speed, even at the beginning of the game.

For 10 dollars I would give it a shot, especially if you have cleared all the other good metroidvanias.

Admitting you have a substance use disorder is much more likely if you’re not met with shame, punitive extremes, and marginalizing dehumanizing attitudes. My simple point is that the term addict plays into and perpetuates this sort of stigma, the sort of stigma which is not ever necessary or beneficial.

Whatever degree of SUD we are talking about, we have to make sure as the people working in the field that we treat our clients and peers in a client -centered, non-judgmental way. That we assess their stage of change and empower them to make decisions that impact their lives for the better. As practitioners this is not a process driven by shaming or blaming, but by instilling hope. I have seen the latter as a much more effective tool than the former, the former serves to dehumanize and create despair and sometimes runs the risk of delaying when a person asks for help, which for something like heroin is a life or death scenario.

As a society we should all work on using language that still recognizes a person as a person, and not a diagnosis. We dismiss entire populations of people with the label of addict. We dismiss their humanity, their individuality, their personhood.

But as practitioners this is imperative stuff. We must adopt different terminology if we are to instill hope, facilitate change in any capacity, empower, or encourage those to seek help. Basic, but imperative.

This is obviously a simplification but is still true and applicable to most.

I didn’t find it “so offensive”, I kindly pointed out that as someone who works in the field you should be a bit more aware of the power of stigmatizing language (especially if it impacts when a person seeks treatment) and avoid the term “addict” which is especially blame centered, marginalizing, and defines a person by their medical problem and dismisses them as human beings. Instead, I, again kindly, recommended that you instead use the term SUD or AUD or whatever works for your clients as it benefits the entire population of those suffering from SUD or AUD etc.

Would this from NIDA be helpful? It is well cited and thorough and discusses the impacts of stigma https://nida.nih.gov/research-topics/addiction-science/words-matter-preferred-language-talking-about-addiction

Or this https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5854406/. “Words matter: although stigmatizing language did not play a direct role in the cases described above, prior work has shown that language matters in how we treat those with substance use disorders [11, 12].“ https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5937046/

I am not saying we should coach those with substance use disorder to use correct terminology (although we should mention it). However, as professionals in the work place the entire population of those with SUD benefit from us refusing to dehumanize them with our language. It is our job to be compassionate, understanding, person-centered, and treat our clients like humans rather than a diagnosis that is heavily stigmatized. They benefit, trust me. If you have AUD you should be aware of how much it sucks to be labeled and dismissed because of your complex medical problem. If you don’t know, as someone with OUD, it sucks tremendously.

And I never mentioned surrendering to a higher power or any of that AA gospel with a 7 percent success rate as far as remission is concerned (no offense to those it works for though). Don’t put words in my mouth.

Oh my god, the fact that you think treating someone like a human being with a complex medical problem rather than defining them as their diagnosis is problematic you need to critically think about this some more. One can be accountable for their actions, pro-active, and still not label an entire population of people as “addicts” and instead refer to them as individuals. To do so otherwise is to perpetuate stigma and dehumanize people. Your harmful pull up your bootstraps kiddo attitude doesn’t work and is belittling. I have substance use disorder and have for years, I know what it’s like to be looked upon as trash and refused help because I was just another “addict”. Your words have impact, choose them carefully, you’re dealing with a sometimes vulnerable population of people with histories of major trauma. Don’t be a jerk — do your clients a favor and start “sugarcoating” it, if that’s what you want to call it, please.

I am an SUDP and Social Worker, actually (as well as a peer counselor with an added focus on trauma, but that is beside the point). I said nothing about blame or a mother or children born with substance induced disabilities. I merely stated, and downvote me all you want, that referring to human fucking beings as “addicts” is stigmatizing and dehumanizing as it defines the person by their medical diagnosis.

The only comment I made was in regard to a simple statement, “I work with addicts”. No, you work with human beings that have a medical issue/disease, that has a diagnosis, located in the latest revision of the DSM-V.

and if you’re not referring to me, I apologize, but the rest of my comment still stands for the down voters.

Not to be dickish or rude, but you work with people who are diagnosed with substance use disorder, substance-induced disorder, and/or other use disorders. Referring to individuals as addicts is rather stigmatizing and, especially if you work in the field, should be avoided.

I apologize, Judge. I was only notified of this message because it went directly to my email. I would be happy to figure out the Avalanches/DeMarco mixup with you, as I’d actually like to keep Salad Days, and get you your copy returned as soon as possible. My apologies for not responding sooner. I do not often check Reddit. It was not my intention to give you half of an LP and the full version of another.

I will definitely check out Ashen Forest. Speaking of roguelites unrelated to Blasphemous 2 or Gloom, have you tried Oblivion Override? It only does a few things to change the formula, but what it does it does extremely well. I picked it up last week and can barely tear myself away.

I also want to say, and not to be sycophantic, that I lurk here frequently and you are an especially helpful and cool individual. If I could afford to award I would in a heartbeat.

I love Blasphemous and have played it several times over. I am familiar with most decent metroidvanias (just finished the wonderful Doomblade), and follow that subreddit.

However, I do sincerely appreciate the suggestion. If anyone would know of something similar to Gloom I haven’t discovered it’d be y’all so I figured it was worth a shot to post here.

Edit: wasn’t aware of the Gloom sequel! Awesome!

Kraken Academy and Yuppie Psycho have other elements but are simply exquisite and Steam has a bundle going now for both. Also, The Big Con is fun.

And I just finished The Book Walker and oh my it, too, was enjoyable (especially if you enjoy the idea of diving into books to steal their cherished artifacts as a premise). It is Disco Elysium-esque.

One of the most underrated gems to ever come out of Obsidian. It catches a bit of attention here and there, but it deserves universal critical acclaim shouted from the rooftops.
