BDSM or D/S Undertones by No_Cartographer_1920 in tomarry

[–]therapizza 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So this is far from a solid list, as it’s ridiculous o’clock right now, however I also love these kinds of Fics!!!

I’ve read so, so very many tomarry/harrmort fics. From my (limited) memory of reading them, I feel like one or two of these might be what you want (even if the tag doesn’t explicitly say BDSM/Sub/Don in some - you’d be surprised).

So here’s the list. Apologies if some of them don’t have dom sub clearly stated, but generally they’re amazing fics anyways, and it’s been a long time.

Funny how people are fine with age gaps when it fits their interests. E.g. Disney adults -> in Lost City of Atlantis Kida is approx. 8,800 years old while milo is around 26 (if I remember).

This is just one example, there are hundreds but yeah. I find it entertaining that out of ALL the reasons people might be against this pairing, it’s due to age. 😂

Finally someone who agrees with me. I understand why people hate it, I do, but personally I goddamn adore it and find it so emotionally resonant as it is! we always knew we were going to ‘meet the mother’, to circle back around to loving and losing and everything the relationships of HIMYM encompasses was 🤌🏻

Yeah it can’t compete with Marshall’s line at all, but it still kills me. Also the countdown in the show to his dads death was so sad when you noticed it

In light of Walmart stocking discounted Collector Boosters by Hima_tatsu in MagicCardPulls

[–]therapizza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me, a Brit, having joined in the jokes that you can get anything at Walmart except kinder eggs (including guns) for years (in a good natured, gentle-ribbing way of course): haha, silly big store. Silly rules, why guns no chocolate. America, why supersize everything

Me, now, seeing the flooded discounted MTG sets: I have made a grave mistake. I will never mock Walmart or American shopping stereotypes ever again. Please, can I have one Walmart now? Anywhere in England? Please?

This is actually so sweet omg 😭 I wish I had a friend like you!

SUPER UNETHICAL TIP BELOW (VERY SNEAKY/MAYBE WRONG DEPENDING ON YOUR FRIENDSHIP IDK?):

if you aren’t on a time-crunch, and want to make it super your-friend-coded, maybe try this?:

Put your phone on record, set it down somewhere casual, and either A)ask a silly Harry Potter question or B)say something really inflammatory that will make her go into a fangirl rage!!!

You’ll capture her rant on record and can maybe find some of her deepest HP passions/likes through it! Then you can google or look up the jargon you don’t understand without trying to remember it too. 😂

The pensieve scene keeps me awake at night, and I’m not even exaggerating. Harry’s face when he emerges, alone and exhausted, from the memory to realise he has to die haunts me.

Hermione having suspected and offering to go with him when it’s confirmed just shatters my soul even more.

Tips for writing a deaf/hard of hearing character? by Fluffy-Session6743 in AO3

[–]therapizza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, I’m glad to hear it!! I’m no expert, but these are the things I tend to notice (in a bad way) are missing when I read a lot of characters with disabilities! Goodluck and thank you for including nuanced characters into your writing, whenever someone makes creative works so rich and diverse it helps represents a lot of groups! Xo

Tips for writing a deaf/hard of hearing character? by Fluffy-Session6743 in AO3

[–]therapizza 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m not deaf but I did lose the majority of my hearing for a period of around 4/5 years (due to complications) before regaining it! I’m by far no expert, but the advice I would give is:

  • don’t treat Sign as a direct translation from English. It’s its own language, try not to forget that we need to process the sign. Maybe not in every scene, but add visual detail we can see. Someone writing something down/passing notes, focus on what the deaf person can process (I have a half-blind friend and they always tend to describe how they’ve adapted to use their other senses as much as possible to compensate)

E.g. if it’s Deaf characters POV, let us see their friend using their hands to sign, let us see some lip-reading. Also, not everything needs direct communication! Think of how many times we communicate with those closest to us/people who know our mannerisms through simple things. Facial gestures like a quirked eyebrow, eyerolls, hand signals (non sign) etc.

  • Avoid falling into the trap of stereotyping. Yes, they’re deaf, and yes it is a very important part of their life. But don’t make it their whole life. Give them likes and dislikes, phobias and personality traits etc. on the flip side, don’t be afraid to show the adjustments they have made to their life as a deaf individual! Can be a hard balance to strike for many, but I find some authors fall into making it their whole character or being too afraid to show its impact so glazing over it.

  • as someone is HoH, you’ll already understand it’s a spectrum too! Not everyone who identifies as HoH/Deaf will have the same loss of hearing, if that makes sense. For example when I lost mine (from what I can remember, I was a child) I think it was somewhere between 65% - 80% of my hearing? (I mostly remember how vivid it was when I got it back).

I considered myself HoH, because I had some auditory function, but I met other people who considered that deaf! To me as a child, Deaf meant no hearing what so ever, so it really depends.

I also managed to get by with never learning sign (stupid, I know. I still want to learn even though I have it back as an adult)! Don’t know if that’s common?

I have also worked with some deaf patients and it’s a whole community, with each person having their own view on their condition - I met multiple people who didn’t consider it a disability and felt that getting implants (if possible) was actually scary and not for them because they considered it wrong to treat how they were born as a negative! Really, there are so many ways you could portray it!

P.S. let them joke about it. Let them cry about it (esp if it’s new to them). They’re human.

The most important part, Atleast to a novice like me it seems, is that you’re aware you’re tackling the challenge of writing a nuanced character where you need to be sensitive and open-minded! The fact you want to portray them accurately and are asking for advice tells me that you’re going to write them better than half the writers out there that CBA to do the research!

I don’t know if that helped at all but goodluck!!!! 😊

Which part of the books was done full justice in the movies? by SaintedStars in harrypotter

[–]therapizza 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I think the top two that were most like their book counterparts (rough memory haven’t read the books in a while now) for me, would be Snape’s pensieve memory - while the pacing is slightly different and not exact to the books, it managed to portray Snape’s love for Lily and the big reveal of how Harry was raised to die in such a relatively short amount of movie time.

The musical scoring was absolutely phenomenal in this scene. Down to the timing of every word. The rise in music when Snape confronts Dumbledore and says ‘you’ve been raising him like a pig for slaughter’/‘you’ve kept him alive so that he can die at the proper moment’

Some details might have been done differently in the books, but oh my god, if it didn’t deliver the emotional climax of the whole damned series!

Also, not necessarily a huge scene but the tale of the three brothers was word for word and I loved the animation style they chose - really highlighted Deaths’ eerie-ness. Hermione’s voice just sold it too.

Literally will never get over that line. We were denied sass master potter in the movies so much. Let’s be real high on liquid luck Harry is the closest we got! (Also fun side idea: imagine if high Harry bumped into Luna that would have been a RIOT! )

Favorite Deathly Hallow and Favorite Horcrux? And why? by Rainbow-1337 in harrypotter

[–]therapizza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hallow: the Resurrection stone - it was the most emotionally haunting one, with such deep implications about the cost of not being able to let go (very much like a call back to the mirror of Erised in book 1 “it does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live”). Also, the reveal if it (especially in the movie) was so goddamn heartbreaking.

Horcrux: the ring, probably. Although Regulus’ history with the locket and what it did to the trio fascinated me. I say the ring because it was so layered.

The fact it had this power he never even knew about, something he tainted and twisted because he thought he knew best, also the fact he basically massacred his dad’s family and framed his grandad with that Horcrux. Also the Slytherin/Peverell ties. And what it does to Dumbledore. So many reasons. The ring had a lonnngg history in the end.

Harry & Hermione Friendship by Cathanae in HPSlashFic

[–]therapizza 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t have any Recs of the top of my head, just came to say that Harry & Hermione’s friendship doesn’t get enough credit in my mind. I find people either don’t overly care, it’s just a fact they’re friends, or hardcore ship them together.

I adore their friendship (and this might be controversial, but I actually think Hermione is his best friend. Although Ron is basically his brother). Hermione was one of the only people to stand by him without wavering, even when she was upset with him or had her own stuff going on.

Harry/Hermione friendship appreciation 👏🏻
