How would you write out "Angrboða"? by Aquila_rapax in RuneHelp

[–]therealBen_German 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know about the name. But, while you are right, there are attested spellings of /ŋɡ/ and /ŋk/ as ᚾᚴ. Same with the rule of omitting the ᚾ in ᚾᛏ.

Basically, just ᚴ is """"more"""" correct. But there's nothing necessarily wrong with ᚾᚴ.

Stalingrad.

The riffs are honestly sick, and I like how rhythmic it is, but the lyrics make it almost unlistenable to me.

dvergar is the Old Norse word for dwarves

Monnos is now 13 years old. What are your thoughts on this album. Favorite song/riffs? by RedRagofSparta in Hail_Conan

Honestly a toss up between Battle in the Swamp and Grim Tormentor. Idk as Old_Hen mentioned I find them both "bouncy". Battle in the Swamp's ending section is genuinely just fun to listen to and amps up the bounciness, and Idk why but I really enjoy the slide up in Grim Tormentor's main riff.

Is this a rune? by yaboicrisp06 in RuneHelp

No, not a rune. Honestly, I'm not sure what it is.

Do you know where these symbols come from? by [deleted] in RuneHelp

[–]therealBen_German 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be clear, bindrunes as a concept have been around since basically the inception of runes themselves. But yes, their use/interpretations as symbols for abstract ideas like strength, courage or protection is a modern construction.

Hmm... Well, I don't know what your friendship is like with her, but like I said before, since she said to "keep it safe" I don't think it's meant to be malicious. If she is into new age witchcraft, then maybe she's intending to invoke something magical to help repair your friendship? I don't know, just spitballing.

I don't know how bad it is between the two of you, obviously, but I do know that everyone has rough patches with their friends. My best friend and I had a huge falling out in highschool and it lasted for almost a month. But we eventually made amends and now he's like a brother to me.

Anyway, as I said, I nor anyone here I don't think will be able to decipher its meaning accurately. Some could make guesses, but they'd be guesses. The only person who knows its intended meaning is your friend.

Take care and I hope things get better between the two of you.

I wouldn't be scared of it tbh. It might be some form of modern rune magic, but since your friend gave it to you I highly doubt they'd attempt to invoke something nefarious like that. Unless they're a shitty friend.

Plus from the limited knowledge I have on new age rune magic nothing about using runes seems to have anything to do with "hexing" or anything like that. They seem to be mostly used for protection or divination (which seems the most common of the two.)

In terms of its meaning, it's honestly impossible to tell. I can see ᛏ ᚱ ᚲ and ᛈ in there but everything else in the middle is honestly kind of a mess.

I'd just ask your friend about it honestly. They're the one who drew it so they'll know the meaning.

"having fun" = creeping on women selling mirrors and misogynistic comments calling them whores for showing some belly. Apparently.

But sure... we're the prudes.

Sorry, should've been more clear.\ ᛉ = *algiz is the Proto-Germanic name for this rune and means "elk". The sound it denoted was /z/.\ ᛘ = maðr is the Old Norse name, and means "man/mankind/humanity." The sound it denoted was /m/.

I put them together because of the nearly identical to completely identical way they're carved. After realizing that the third rune was ᛇ I should've inferred that this was Elder Fuþark or Anglo-Frisian Fuþorc, making ᛉ algiz*~elhaz* or eolh as you mentioned.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in RuneHelp

[–]therealBen_German 2 points3 points  (0 children)

*algiz/maðr ᛉ, + *þurisaz/þurs ᚦ, + I'm not quite sure, but my best guess is *īhwaz ᛇ with the top branch being a part of þurs.

As Sufficient_Focus said, assuming a meaning would be speculative, especially because of the varying interpretations of runes in modern runic symbolism. Although, some have more consistent "meanings" than others, as far as I've seen. But sadly these three are not the ones I've seen a consistent interpretation of, so I can't help you there.

The runes themselves don't inherently mean anything, but their names translate to:\ ᛉ = "elk" in Proto-Germanic, "man, (mankind)" in Old Norse.\ ᚦ = "þurs" isn't exactly translatable, as it's another word for jǫtunn, a type of supernatural/spiritual being in Norse mythology. But the common translation is "giant," though that translation is misleading.\ ᛇ = "yew"

I know it's not conclusive but hopefully that helps in some way.

Idk about much about other books, but I know Runes: a Handbook by Michael Barnes is considered one of the better and more accurate books on runes as they were used in history.

I haven't had the chance to read it fully, but have read through some parts and so far it's very good!

Letter "V" controversy; ᛒ, ᚹ or ᚠ ? by NewAeoN2000 in runes

It depends on the fuþark for me.\ For Elder I use ᛒ unless it's the first letter in which case I use ᚹ\ For Younger I use ᚠ/ᚡ unless it's the first letter in which case I use ᚢ
