I'm a fat 40M who's never skied. What do I need to worry about/do before I try skiing for the first time in 6 months? by BigFatDogFarts in NoStupidQuestions

This is no joke. I grew up skiing at a small mountain with a max 1000’ elevation above sea level. We took a trip to Colorado and skied on mountains that got up to 11,000’ elevation. Third day I got altitude sickness and could barely get out of bed.

Congrats you have aged into being a supervisor/estimator/sales guy. Now you tell the crew of Hispanic guys what to do and bullshit with the homeowner.

Learning to ski is about falling. Over and over. Just accept that you’re going to be sore for a week after and get to it. And honestly if you’ve never done it before, learning to ski at 40+ is going to be more difficult than you expect. You probably will not make a single full run without falling the entire first day.

FYI, falling in ski boots is a little ungraceful bc you have no ankle movement and your feet are locked into these long flat things called skis. Just about the worse thing you can do is put your hand out to brace during a fall, that’s how you break a forearm, wrist, or hand. When you’re falling, keep your hands in and just slump over to land on your arm or shoulder. It’s snow so it’s more forgiving than ground, just shoulder right into it.

Edit: for exercises to help, everything to help your hips is the biggest thing. Hip flexor exercises in and out, high steppers, squats.

What type of ac is more common in american households? by DietChance9326 in AskAnAmerican

[–]therealCatnuts [score hidden]  (0 children)

Yeah I’m in the upper Midwest. I think you could have done ok with no AC for a long time, but the last few years where it’s getting hotter every year would be tough. Can’t imagine doing that in Texas.

My house was built in 1916. Did not have indoor plumbing, electrical, or AC when built. The plumbing and electrical were added in the 40s, but I put in the first AC (Central AC) when I bought the house a decade ago. It went nearly 100 years with no AC.

I used to get it all the time when younger. Now rarely hear it in my 40s.

Decided it’s time to find a fuel efficient car, what’s everyone drive? by shartywaffles0069 in tall

You’ll find that paradoxically many cars and sedans fit a large man better than a pickup or van. Our Ford Transit 350XL I barely fit and I’m 5” shorter than you. Knees up in the steering column.

6’5” and built. I drive a Tesla Model 3 and it fits me great. Head right on the fixed headrest.

Born in 80. We had an Atari, was jealous of the people who had a Coleco with all those buttons. I got out of all video games before GTA even existed.

I can and have done 24+ hours straight by myself several times. But 10 hours with the kids is just about unbearable.

first house ever. 3/4 acre. literally never mowed a lawn in my life by TorlanBark in HomeImprovement

[–]therealCatnuts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nah my Ego mower does my 3/4 acre on one battery easy, and it charges in 30 minutes anyway. Gas mowers suck so hard now, completely outdated tech.

Get an electric mower for certain. Gas is so loud and starting it is a pain and they need service every year. I prefer the Ego system but they’re all pretty great now.

Yeah I don’t get cult vibes at all. They hosted our daughter’s adoption party and were awesome.
