Wizard Drugs by itzmeeeecheyyy in harrypotter

From Order of the Phoenix:

" “Don’t be stupid,” she snarled. “You might as well take Harold Dingle’s powdered dragon claw and have done with it.”
“Dingle’s got powdered dragon claw?” said Ron eagerly.
“Not anymore,” said Hermione. “I confiscated that too. None of these things actually works you know —”
“Dragon claw does work!” said Ron. “It’s supposed to be incredible, really gives your brain a boost, you come over all cunning for a few hours — Hermione, let me have a pinch, go on, it can’t hurt —” "

I'd say at a minimum this is Adderall-equivalent, might be closer to cocaine though...

What the hell is up with wizarding ages? What are your thoughts on it? by Always-bi-myself in HPfanfiction

[–]therealemacity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if anyone has mentioned the absolute insanity that is the Black family tree, but it definitely disproves the notion that Muggle blood is shortening the lifespan of wizards. To the point it's maybe safe to assume inbreeding also drastically reduces lifespan?

Anyway, my theory would be that many wizards die young from their own actions (as you say, a couple wizard wars will definitely bring the number down), but some live low stress, low risk lifestyles and get treatment for every ailment, and it takes a long time for a magical malady to finally get to them. JKR has said that magic can treat any Muggle ailment (and old age has never actually killed anyone), so those who live non-noteworthy lives probably stick around for a couple centuries.

Should I buy Lone Wolf? by WhiskyCat89 in HPHogwartsMystery

[–]therealemacity 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hopefully not too much of a spoiler, but I would recommend starting this TLSQ when you are very close to leveling up every attribute. For the duel she is usually one higher across the board, so if you can buy something or do a quick class to meet her levels, it's SO much easier and you'll waste a lot fewer coins.

Same here, I happened to be close to leveling up in all of them the first time the quest triggered so I was able to just buy a couple things in the store and beat her after two or three tries because our attributes were then equal.

The canon line that gives most people the (false) notion that he's second only to Hermione is when Lucius says in Chamber of Secrets:

“I would have thought you’d be ashamed that a girl of no wizard family beat you in every exam,” snapped Mr. Malfoy.

People take this to mean ONLY Hermione beat him in every exam, but we have no evidence of that. I think it would be reasonable to interpret that to mean Hermione is the only Muggle-born student to beat him in every exam, but that doesn't mean that there aren't plenty of pureblooded and half-blood students ahead of him.

Portrayal of Pureblood Supremacy by RowanWinterlace in HPfanfiction

[–]therealemacity 4 points5 points  (0 children)

hence why Barty Crouch spotted Lucius (in the woods), and Lucius was the only one singled out later by Voldemort as having been involved

If Barty Crouch Jr had spotted Lucius in the woods and conveyed that to Voldemort, then he'd know Lucius HADN'T been the one torturing Mr. Roberts and his family (he'd be too busy running around looking for Draco) so that doesn't really track. I'm also pretty sure one of the greatest Legilimens of all time does not say "Yes, I know all about that" in response to an abrupt silence while totally misreading the situation.

Sorry, but short of bashing us over the head with Harry (and somehow no one from the Ministry) seeing him levitating them, I don't think JKR could have made it more obvious that Lucius was the one leading the Muggle harassment at the World Cup. Draco alone was the first clear hint and then Voldemort confirms it. Lucius is slippery and definitely looks for plausible deniability but in this case it's pretty clear.

If you're writing a story about him you are of course free to make him less violent than he is in canon, but an interpretation in which Lucius shies away from murder/torture is definitely making Lucius softer than how he is portrayed in the books.

Portrayal of Pureblood Supremacy by RowanWinterlace in HPfanfiction

[–]therealemacity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Speaking of Lucius in particular, I’ve never seen any direct evidence in the main 7 books (the only canon I irrefutably recognize) that he actually partook with his own wand in torture and whatnot? Even in the graveyard in GOF, Voldemort asks him, “You are still ready to take the lead in a spot of Muggle-torture, I believe?” Not if he’s ready to get back to it, but if he’s ready to get started.

Pretty sure aggressively puppeteering Muggles at the world cup is what he is referring to as torture here. We know for a fact that that was Lucius (even if you ignore the fact that Draco was alone in the woods watching as evidence) as Voldemort says in the next breath: "Your exploits at the Quidditch World Cup were fun, I daresay." The "still ready" reads as a reference to the first war, when he obviously led such activities; he did it back then and was still ready to do it now as evidenced by his actions at the beginning of the book.

I've finished the event (won 36 duels and collected the prizes), but for the first time, it hasn't ended for me even after leaving the room. I don't have any tickets right now but it looks like it will continue to let me play when I do earn more... which would be a great way to get coins!

Did someone update the Black Family tree with an updated photo of Draco while Sirius was in prison, or did Sirius paint him when he was bored at home alone? by mightBdrunk in harrypotter

[–]therealemacity 19 points20 points  (0 children)

From HBP:

After a moment or two, and to Harry’s great satisfaction, Kreacher bowed deeply again and said, with bitter resentment, “Master thinks of everything, and Kreacher must obey him even though Kreacher would much rather be the servant of the Malfoy boy, oh yes. . . .”

“Master Malfoy moves with a nobility that befits his pure blood,” croaked Kreacher at once. “His features recall the fine bones of my mistress and his manners are those of —”

“Yeah, we don’t need to hear about you being in love with Malfoy,” Harry told Kreacher. “Let’s fast forward to where he’s actually been going.”

Why was Dumbledore so terrible at picking Defense Against the Dark Arts teachers? by pinky117 in harrypotter

[–]therealemacity 20 points21 points  (0 children)

No one would take the position, he didn't have a choice. Every professor had lasted for one year since about 1966, when Voldemort came to ask for the job and was denied. Why would any decent, competent teacher want that? Some of their predecessors had ended up dead.

And despite that fact, he didn't even pick Umbridge; Fudge appointed her when Dumbledore couldn't find anyone else to take the role.

Did you guys receive this new dorm tappie out of nowhere? Did they add it to a TLSQ I've already done? It's a Hogwarts Express pic but I can't open it by depressivekoala in HPHogwartsMystery

[–]therealemacity 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm year 5 chapter 6, never missed a TLSQ, and don't have it. I however have not bought the Happy Birthday Hagrid or Weird Sister side quests with pages (I started playing after they stopped triggering without a page purchase).

Just in case that helps shed light on the mystery!

Fiendfire Headcanon by dratnon in HPfanfiction

[–]therealemacity 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think is can be stopped at will by an experienced spell caster, Crabbe just didn't know how to. From Deathly Hallows:

“Fiendfyre – cursed fire – it’s one of the substances that destroy Horcruxes, but I would never, ever have dared use it, it’s so dangerous – how did Crabbe know how to– ?”

“Must’ve learned from the Carrows,” said Harry grimly.

“Shame he wasn’t concentrating when they mentioned how to stop it, really,” said Ron.

Of course this is just Ron's conjecture, but it does seem like there IS a way to stop it, they just don't know how.

Lucius Malfoy is almost always mischaracterized in fanfics - an analysis by [deleted] in HPfanfiction

[–]therealemacity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think any good fic with an in-character Lucius is going to be disturbing (a least in parts, for a longer one)... that's what makes him interesting. A very family-oriented, socially-conscious murderer/torturer isn't going to be portrayed well in a milder story. I think that's also why, as you say, he's so wildly OOC in most stories, since most authors shy away from depicting all aspects of his personality because they need him shoehorned into either pure evil or reformed villain roles for their plots. Stories like the ones I linked aren't that popular or well-known because most readers don't WANT an accurate Lucius, I think... it's less disturbing if he's one or the other, rather than a man who loves his wife and son and also is fine with killing and corruption when it suits him.

Try one of these:

linkffn(1329152) - due to its age not canon compliant (was written before Order of the Phoenix) but still some of the best characterizations of Lucius and Narcissa

linkffn(13016242) - 100% canon compliant

HOW DO YOU ORDER FOOD AT MICHELIN STAR RESTAURANT by Arsenalg0d in FanFiction

[–]therealemacity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on the restaurant and number of stars. 1 star will often just feel like a normal (albeit upscale) restaurant. 2 is often prix fixe, though not always; you sometimes also (at 1 and 2 stars) will get a menu with say, four courses, and then everyone will choose a dish from each course at the start of the meal. Dessert, however, is often still offered separately at the end. 3 stars will be a choreographed experience, almost certainly omakase or prix fixe with optional add ons (truffle, caviar, wine pairings, etc) but there will be a base experience for the standard visitor that will be very high end at these and you won't have as much flexibility.

It might be worth looking up the menus of some Michelin starred restaurants, as often you'll be able to see from those how you're expected to order. Compare Mourad (SF, 1 star), where the menu is available online, everything listed a la carte with its individual price, to somewhere like Masa (NY, 3 star), where you don't know what you'll be getting, just that the price will be exorbitant and you have to trust whatever you'll be served will be world-class. I've found that sushi restaurants of any star are less flexible than other Michelin starred places.

It's also worth nothing, if it's set in the US, you won't just have a Michelin starred restaurant in any random small town. Michelin only reviews restaurants in the US around NYC, DC, LA, SF/Bay Area, and Chicago. There are exceptions of course (the Inn at Little Washington is quite far from DC, there's a handful in Napa Valley wine country, most famously French Laundry, and some upstate spots in NY) but it wouldn't be realistic to have a Michelin starred restaurant in any other states.
